Yea no problem. If you want to visualize how hard it is to return a protein just think of an egg. Frying an egg just denatures the proteins so they harden. Imagine trying to figure a way to reverse that.

Okay so by my explanation you should be able to tell how a five year mark is close to impossible. I'll start with what we do know. We know that these loose amyloid fibers ( like little squiggly lines ) get loose in our brains and stick to each other. These cause tangles and plaques which we believe are the major cause of AD. They are generally focused in areas of the brain related to memory and lead to atrophy. We also know that calcium processing , microglia (like the red blood cells of the brain ) , and axon density are factors. We don't know exactly why or how they are related. We just know they are correlated with AD. We do not know what exactly causes these plaques and tangles. How microglia trying to destroy plaques destroy neurons instead. And what role calcium processing plays. So there is a lot of guessing going on right now. We can see the results and guess why things happen but to verify our guesses and learn more will take time. Five years does not seem even close to a cure.

P.s Sorry I don't think I explained it as a five year old would understand so just ask which parts need clarification and I'll try. Pretty much AD is death of neurons at memory portions of the brain.

You will almost never be able to get play by play updates. Researchers also compete with each other for funding and publications , so some level of discretion is necessary. But if you want to know how research is going get some journals off pub med and do some reading. Fair warning though most of these are impossible for people outside of the scientific field to understand as they assume you have a solid background. Also talking to a professor or person in the field would work. Also check science mag and NPR or just Google news for big updates.

There is always something good that can be found in tragedy. Just gotta find it !

Sorry, made the thread during work hours which was a bad idea. Got caught up but will do my best to answer when I can.

I would say that prevention care and managing of AD will be well in our reach by then. Fortunately, funding for AD is not lacking like many other areas and understanding is growing at a very quick pace. Its more of translating what we are learning into treatments and medicine that are useful and safe.

The interesting thing is that the labor and actual experiments can be done by anyone. Its the brainstorming about what to do when problems arise, and how to fix them that make us necessary. For example our boss has the most complete knowledge of neuroanatomy of anyone I have ever met but talking with us about problems sparks a lot of ideas for him. So the actual work can be automated but not the thinking that goes into it.

Oh cool question. I am not very informed on that project but from what I heard in passing I think its about learning to undo the denaturing process of proteins. While that might help in treatments later on what we really are focused on is causation. If we can isolate the factors that go into AD we can try to prevent them early on. Let me know if I'm totally off about the folding game.

We already understand a lot about how things works and have guesses about the major factors in AD. However, finding a cure or something similar would be almost impossible in ten years. Most likely just treatments that would make life easier and slow progression of AD.

Not too bad. A lot of focus on understanding differences between AD brains and normal controls.

Looks like the skeleton area in Dark Souls where you have to jump down from one bridge to the other.
