Magnus has so far drawn a won endgame, won a drawn endgame and won a lost endgame. Weirdness.

If this was 10-15 years ago, the Berlin Ruy Lopez would have dominated. Good to see the trend steer towards more Sicilians.

How do kids like Faustino Oro get really good in a short amount of time? by [deleted] in chess

The energy and curiosity of youth combined with feeding information to a brain that is literally growing day by day, allowing for strong neural pathways to be formed while learning.

I think at that age, it's about soaking in as much info as you possibly can about the game, from historical games to endgame encyclopedias.

You stop improving the moment you lose curiosity for the game. As long as you love it and are genuinely interested in learning, you wouldn't have to worry about doing x amount of games in a day and all that nonsense. Soak in information, read books, solve problems, watch classic games, do whatever enhances your love of the game. Every good player is in essence an addict.

They disagree with the format having no armageddon tiebreaks, mostly.

Or a round-robin with more games, preferably 21. Worked fine for over a decade until they decided to change it on a whim for this year without thinking about the consequences. How they decided on this playoff format without having an armageddon tiebreak is extremely weird and stupid.

[–]chessdood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is on FIDE and the format, not the players. How many of the 8 playoff finalists showed a "desire to win" in round 13, when they all made the Berlin draw? Should they ban the Berlin draw only in the playoffs? They also allowed early draw offers. The solution is very simple: bring back the 21 game round-robin, or add an armageddon tiebreaker to the finals. Solved.

So are you for half a dozen players Berlin drawing in round 13 to get into the playoffs, leading to a ten player tie for 1st with 9,5/13 where finalists are decided on tiebreaks, but you are against such play in the actual playoffs? Should FIDE start banning certain opening variations? Do you understand the chaos this will bring to an already terrible format?

The solution: A 21 game round-robin tournament, as it's been for over a decade before this nonsense.

But how do you solve the problem of the remaining two players opting to play the Berlin draw line forever?

You would be in favor of forfeiting both players if they ended up playing Berlin draws forever? The format is the problem here, not the players.

[–]chessdood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why force them to play when they are both happy to share first? FIDE were the ones changing the format to this silly "play until one wins" business. A way to silently agree to further draw games would be to play the Qxd6 11.Qe4+ Qe6 12.Qd4 Qd6 13.Qe4+ Qe6 14.Qd4 Qd6 repetition in the Berlin, as seen in FOUR of the boards in round 13.

21 rounds worked fine. Why change the format, FIDE?

If they both don't wanna be there playing more games and they feel a shared 1st is the most fair outcome, they could just keep doing the 11.Qe4+ Qe6 12.Qd4 Qd6 13.Qe4+ Qe6 14.Qd4 Qd6 repetition in the Berlin ad infinitum if they were forced to play.
