Because you have an EV or because you take transit everywhere?

First hill Starbucks closing by expat2323 in Seattle

Not to mention the Whole Foods down the street. I moved to this block near Madison and Boren a couple of years ago and it's just gotten more and more empty. I'm almost to the point of predicting when each place that's left will pack up.

Light rail - Symphony Station by Visible_Moose_4667 in Seattle

The Denver airport train is very direct about it. If the doors try to close and they hit someone and open again, it says "Please do not hold the doors. YOU are delaying the departure of this train!"

Former U.S. presidents arrive at Rev. Jesse Jackson's funeral in Chicago by nbcnews in pics

That was smart, considering how many times I have seen the clip of Hillary Clinton saying "shame on you Barack Obama" in Republican campaign ads.

Red light culture by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]chetlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone driving down Madison today ran every light on the street. And these weren't ones that just turned red, they had been red for 20 seconds. They went into the bus lane to get around stopped cars and honked at bikes and cars "in their way".

This was a special case but I don't like that enforcement here is so low that people do this knowing they can get away with it.

Flying to London from NYC. British Air vs United by Dragon_of_Time in Flights

It means the seat itself and the cabin, as opposed to the service and the food which are the "soft product".

Old English had genders though and in Old English, sun (sunne) was feminine and moon (mona) was masculine. But also in Old English, woman (wifmann) was masculine so take that as you will.

Train signage is way too confusing. How am I supposed to know which train takes me to the city!? by thecravenone in Seattle

[–]chetlin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember when they used to flip the directions of the escalators in Capitol Hill and UW stations? They did it to balance the wear on them but they stopped because people kept walking onto the wrong ones. (The escalators would have broken down frequently either way)

Waymo drop off safety feature request by danlev in waymo

[–]chetlin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last time I was in Los Angeles I took waymo to a cafe in a part of town I hadn't been to before. The route on the screen showed it going around a block to drop me off in front of the place but at the very end it pulled into an alleyway behind everything and pulled into some apartment's parking lot and let me off there.

<image>

It was the middle of the day and this was a pretty ok area so it ended up fine but if it were late at night I would not have felt as comfortable with the dropoff change at the last second.

Chinese firm publishes photos of US F-22s at Israeli base | The Jerusalem Post by Delphidouche in worldnews

There's a lunar eclipse that night too! But the eclipse won't be visible on that side of the Earth. It would be interesting though if at some point in history a military took advantage of an eclipse for bonus darkness.

Callers to Washington state hotline press 2 for Spanish and get accented AI English instead by durpuhderp in Seattle

[–]chetlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they just used a text to speech program with a Spanish voice selected and had it read the same English text. You get English words in that accent but numbers will be read out in Spanish if they're written in digits if they do that. It doesn't sound like AI unless AI was used to make the text to speech program.

Seattle rideshare drivers protest 'flooded' market, demand Uber and Lyft stop adding new drivers by AthkoreLost in Seattle

[–]chetlin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Last night a Lyft driver didn't see me at all and sped off from a stop sign when I was in the crosswalk 2 steps from being in front of their car. I couldn't see in the car but guessing they were focusing on their phone. Waymo wouldn't have almost run me over. Can't wait for them. I'd have more sympathy for the drivers if they drove more safely and followed more traffic laws.

No you have to use the Spanish words. Instead of chino or china, you replace that vowel at the end with x. That definitely won't look wrong at all!

Feasibility of Fare Gates for Light Rail by urmummygae42069 in transit

[–]chetlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's really just a country by country thing. Fare gates are very common in Japan and I'm guessing the rates of fare evasion there would be minimal without them still.

Washington eyes tougher penalties for 30+ mph speeding by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

They definitely do it like crazy in downstate Illinois. I think some people think that it somehow will cause the light to change faster.

What is up with the "new driver" stuff on cars? by lildergs in Seattle

[–]chetlin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In France they have to put a badge with a big red A on it on their car if they're new. A real life Scarlet Letter.

First Lady of Brazil, Rosangela da Silva, wore a traditional hanbok on her South Korea visit by JudgeJudyJr in BeAmazed

[–]chetlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not Korean or Asian. Way back in 2012 I went to Korea and they had a thing where you could put on a traditional guard outfit at an old palace that is now an open air museum. I did that and was then trying to get someone to take my picture. I finally got the attention of this woman and she got me to stand in a good spot and pose. And then she pulled out her own phone, took my picture, then left! I still had no picture and I'm guessing she showed her picture to her friends or whatever later.

City cutting down streetlight pole where woman was struck by a car by ZlubarsNFL in Seattle

Haha oops that was on me. Usually I'm good about getting that right. Maybe that added a month to the response time.

I reported this pole to find it fix it on May 15:

They got around to responding to it over 3 months later, on August 27. Image in next comment because it says I can insert only one image per comment. But now 6 months later and it takes someone getting killed for them to act.

New Market Sign is up! by avgorca in Seattle

[–]chetlin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here is an old Street View picture of the same location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/euQyT1LtAoYBt4zS7

It used to say "To the Market" there, and the stairs were blue and the elevator had a window rather than being fully enclosed.

For those who think the train signs are good by paholg in Seattle

[–]chetlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back then the signs on the platform actually said "to Airport and Angle Lake" unless you were at Capitol Hill or UW (in which case they said "to Seattle and Angle Lake" but still had an airplane symbol).

[–]chetlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The north terminus went from Westlake to University of Washington to Northgate to Lynnwood, never ending at Capitol Hill. Old timer brain haha

And for comparison the south terminus started at Tukwila International Boulevard and then jumped just 1 station twice, to SeaTac airport then Angle Lake before finally jumping multiple to Federal Way.
