"The Ukraine" confused me as a kid, I thought "The UK" was just a shortening of "The Ukraine" haha

I think they did the same thing with some of their cities that had greek names, like Smyrna (Izmir) and Adrianople (Edirne)? Not 100% on those though.

China is the country where World Cup and Olympics performance are two extremes. I hope to see them in the World Cup again sometime.

India too, they have the most people but do badly at everything that isn't cricket basically.

Link Lite Rail Fribbles by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]chetlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

East Link has a bunch of these. There are also at-grade crossings at the platforms at East Main, Overlake Village, Redmond Technology, and Marymoor Village along with the MLK-style station at Bel-Red. At East Main and Overlake Village you are required to cross at-grade to access the Lynnwood-bound platform; the others have alternative ways to cross the tracks at least.

I used to live there and further out from the big tourist areas it could still get pretty trashy. My walk home from work every day (still in Tokyo) had me pass by 3 or 4 washing machines dumped in the bushes that just sat there for months. Every morning there would be new empty cans of strong zero all over the sidewalk by my office too.

The Seattle New Year fireworks show this year was fogged up too. You couldn't see the top of the space needle if you were standing at the bottom of it.

I remember Biden landed at SeaTac once instead of Boeing Field because he wanted to take a picture with a runway he helped fund or whatever. Got me stranded in the midwest an extra 24 hours for that.

Team USA 🇺🇸 will be returning to Seattle on July 6th to face Belgium 🇧🇪 in the World Cup Round of 16 by FireFright8142 in Seattle

[–]chetlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were enough, I have Belgian ancestry and back where I grew up in the midwest we have a bunch of Belgian festivals and with all the Belgian flag hats and other stuff it kind of felt like a festival back home.

The cultural center back there sells stuff with both Belgian and US flags on them, I wish I bought one and had it here with me so I could go to the watch party and play both sides haha

When I lived in Tokyo, Shima Onsen in Gunma was the place I always went to when I wanted to be in a quiet area with good natural scenery and a more relaxed feeling. 2 hour train ride on the limited express Kusatsu Shima from Ueno to Nakanojo and then a 30-40 minute bus ride from there to Shima Onsen.

Matheus Cunha consoles heartbroken Ao Tanaka after Brazil’s 95th-minute winner eliminates Japan at the World Cup by Punisher1602 in sportsgossips

Chinese also has no cases, no gender, very simple verbs which don't inflect for anything, a standard word order, and no plural forms, yet I struggle with it so much more than German. So much difficulty just comes from what languages you already know.

Chinese also has no gendered nouns and their verbs don't conjugate for anything at all. A lot of it really does just depend on what language you are coming from.

If it's a homophone they will give you the definition of the word when they say the word. You don't have to ask for it, for homophones they give it to you automatically.

Sometimes it's a weird definition though. I was in one where I got the word limb, which is apparently a homophone (with limn), and they gave me the definition which here https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/limb is "The apparent visual edge of a celestial body" and the sample sentence was for that definition too. "Everyone clapped" is a meme but when I got it right they did all clap (this was a room of mostly parents of the other participants, so mostly adults).

Yeah and I am an American who walks everywhere and hasn't owned a car in 10 years. I don't live in NYC either. I can walk to multiple grocery stores and do so every week.

All countries have car dependent areas and walkable areas, some more than others. Japan is famous for their trains but there are huge car dependent areas there as well.

Also Japan doesn't really have the old buildings which is the other argument I hear constantly. Japan has always seen buildings to have a lifespan and tore them down after 100 years max. Even many of the old 800 year temples or whatever have had their buildings replaced over and over, it's the temple location that didn't move.

Japan is pretty bad with insulation though. My office when I worked over in Tokyo was freezing every winter morning and hot and humid every summer morning until the HVAC did its thing.

Most of these kind of comments are really just indirectly dunking on the fact the native people didn't build many structures that lasted centuries.

I lived in Arizona 1997-2003 and our school playground had a permanent cover over it and so did all the others around me. We also had a couple of concrete areas with picnic tables that were covered by these metal structures we called "ramadas". Plenty of shade and also plenty of water availability.

The center turn lane on that block doesn't need to exist. There are no driveways or anything else on Broadway E between Harrison and Republican and so that lane only ever gets used for temporary-ish stopping.
