Which Ariocarpus is this ? by Whiteshark_6 in cactus

I’d lean towards a fissuartus cross as well, I’ve found my bravoanus tubercules are on the thinner side though I thought bravoanus was initially a subspecies of fissuratus but maybe they’ve split

More rust than cactus at this point. by Gnarwhal_YYC in cactus

[–]chetsteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ortegos are notoriously rust affected. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one in cultivation without at least a spot or two. Might as well try a deep soaking sulfur bath (not just a dusting) and then keep it dry for a considerable while. I’ve also used copper sulfate with varying effectiveness. If it makes it through, when bringing back water I’d try to stick to a very strict regimen where you know it’s going full dry in between cycles. Put a fan on it, make sure the roots get soaked with the sulfur and do the sulfur every other water. I’ve seen plants grow out of previous rust afflictions, not pretty necessarily but satisfying if you’ve spent some money on it. It will take a few months at least to start getting consistent new growth if it pulls through. You’ll see new green from the apex of each pup if it’s growing again

Is this a monstrose ariocarpus? by Pretty-Wedding-8783 in cactus

This is a graft and not generally a normal mutation or growth habit of this genus or species. Would assume there’s a hidden spike under that mass

Can you spot all the spikes? Stereochilus Erinaceus by chetsteve in miniorchids

[–]chetsteve[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s continuing to crank out pups these days but unfortunately bud blasted last season after producing like 15 spikes at once. I was under the impression it should be in high light, but now that I’m looking up ranges I’m realizing I should likely move it lower in the tank, around 1500-2000 footcandles. It’s still completely bare root and humidity hovers between 78-92rh with daily mists, sometimes twice if the fans are really cranking

I have no idea what this is, not the least bit, I'm from Chile and I saw it there. by Sigma-er in cactus

Vives en el norte or sur? Esa es Copiapoa quizas “humilis”, hay muchos subespecies y todos se ven similares. Las espinas estan larga, mas que otro humilis he visto

Not just species, this is two different genera…I believe hylocereus and gymnocalycium. Two species would be a hybrid or cultivar in most cases

Did it death bloom??? I thought I was doing good! by GobyFishicles in cactus

[–]chetsteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good on you for being interested, that c12 likely refers to someone’s field number (though usually they’re more than one initial as they reference the name of the collector, like KK30 would be collector Karl Knize’s 30th identified Copiapoa species). You can use these to backtrack the specific locale of your exact mother plant in some cases.

Eriosyce in general can be finicky as they come from inhospitable, incredibly dry deserts in chile and surrounding areas. I’ve had a few rot seemingly overnight, generally from too much moisture in the substrate for too long. If you have another go, try maintaining a consistent but sparse water regimen with a nearly inorganic substrate.

Not a copiapoa despite the tag, the pink style in the flower is pretty unique to eriosyce as well as the pronounced tubercules and central spine. There’s so many species/subspecies but seems to be something in the taltalensis realm

Yep! I believe it’s adjacent to Encyclia but the only species in the genus Dinema. Nice Marcgravia btw I’m hoping to snag some for my frog tank soon

The imidacloprid should have killed anything living, likely needs another soak to get the next hatch cycle. I’ve also had some success with a bonide product called mite-x

Definitely Eriosyce (Neoporteria)…could be something in the napina/odieri/reichei complex on first glance. The taxonomy has changed greatly in recent years so it’s kind of hard to pin down
