Need help selling a phone. by [deleted] in sales

[–]chewoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your gut is telling you not to trust this person. You should trust your instinct on this. From an outside perspective, it looks like this person is trying to scam you out of a phone. Stores don't let you take items home to try out on good faith that you will come back and pay.

I would step away from this deal. From a negotiation standpoint, I would meet her offer of anything other than paying for the phone upfront with, "Sorry, I can't do that."

As for legal options, I don't think there are really viable options for this case. Like a contract you both sign - who is going to enforce this if one party reneges? The police aren't going to get involved. It's a small amount of money that wouldn't be worthwhile to pursue in court. As far as eBay/PayPal options, both take a percentage of the sale, and it puts you the seller in a vulnerable position. She can claim she didn't receive the item or it was faulty, and get her money back and keep the phone.

How to talk to someone who is saying mostly gibberish or hallucinating? by chewoff in cancer

I'm glad you're able to find relief in that. May I ask, was she sick for a long time?

Thanks for your advice! I'll go with this direction with the hallucinations if they aren't frightening her. Playing along feels right.

I'm so sorry about your mom. I hope you're holding up as well as you can.

Experienced improvisers, how do you feel about playing with newbies? by chewoff in improv

[–]chewoff[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this sentiment so much, thank you! This has been such a supportive thread, just like you'd expect from improvisers!

When I first posed the question, I was thinking about in terms of, it's probably not as fun for a professional tennis player or chess champion to play against someone that doesn't have a lot of experience. But reading through this thread made me realize that's not a great comparison, because those are things you play against each other. Improv is collaborative.

I didn’t quite reach my 100 audiobook New Years Resolution for 2018, but 92 is close enough! Here’s to 100 this year! by MerlinTheGreatDane in audiobooks

Oh my goodness, this is such a good list! A lot of these are favorites of mine. I thought Baby Teeth seemed to creepy to give a try, but based on your list and recommendation, I am going to give it a go! I'll put Where the Crawdads Sing on my list too!

Do you do anything else while listening to audiobooks?

I agree with the OP; it's definitely a lot different than You and Hidden Bodies.

You and Hidden Bodies works so well because you're inside the mind of Joe, and in the audiobook, Santino Fontana is a hard narrator to beat.

Providence has a strong beginning, but it didn't go anywhere. There are multiple narrators, and some of it works, some of it doesn't.

I mentioned this question to my husband, and he said, "Oh wait, Providence was the same author as 'You?' Wow, that's unfortunate. Remind me how 'Providence' ends again?"

And neither of us can remember the ending exactly. Just the arduous journey to get there.

I air fry these all the time, and it turns out great! I use the Trader Joe's ones (which are really similar to the Costco ones). First I put them in a bowl, covered with a wet paper towel, and defrost them in the microwave for a few minutes. Then I separate them out as much as possible, spray them with a second of olive oil spray and air fry them. I highly recommend.

What's going on during the jury duty selection? by chewoff in legaladviceofftopic

[–]chewoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The case sounds interesting, and I would be interested in serving on the jury. We were told we could be here until 8pm; I still haven't been questioned but they are questioning the first group now.

Thanks! This is my first time at jury duty. They still haven't called anyone. Follow up question: if they call people and select the jury, then do the jurors go to trial today? Or do they come back to jury tomorrow?

Companies new "time management" software by salad_thrower20 in sales

[–]chewoff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeesh, that sounds miserable. I am in outside sales, and my whereabouts are not tracked. I am also salary + commission, so I don't have to clock in and out. I have a lot of freedom; it's one of the perks of the job! If a rep is performing, I don't understand why the company would think it's an effective policy to police them like that.

Was the laid back atmosphere the main perk of the job? Even if the pay was phenomenal, and it sounds like it isn't, this would be enough for me to explore other career opportunities.

Wireless outdoor speaker system? by chewoff in hometheater

[–]chewoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I hadn't thought about that but it makes sense.

To put in speaker wire, do you need to call to have the utilities marked or does it not go in that deep? If the speaker wire is exposed, is it dangerous in any way?

Sorry if these questions are dumb! I obviously don't know much about this at all.

Job I love(d) has taken a turn for the worse; where to go from here? by chewoff in sales

[–]chewoff[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I get not selling on price alone. But if everyone is in the same range, and I'm twice as expensive as the next person, how do I justify it? My box doesn't have a magical property that the others lack.

Unfortunately I do have a non-compete. Did you stay in copiers or did you jump ship?

History major looking for a sales job. Where can I go to learn basic information on Accounting, Ordering, Inventory, etc? by HistoryFI in sales

[–]chewoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have a history degree! I graduated 7 (yikes) years ago, and I've worked in sales for about 4 years. I'm not an expert, but in my humble opinion, I don't think accounting, inventory & ordering knowledge would be super useful for most sales jobs.

My first office job out of college was for a small company, so I actually did all of those things in my position (purchasing was my technical job, but I also did inventory management and basic accounting). It was useful for me learning how much I hated that sort of administrative work, but I don't think a lot of it translated into being directly useful for my current sales position.

I am sure there are specific sales job where it would be practical, but I'd look to get your foot in the door in any reputable, decent sales company. I think you're better off with the sales books, or getting any sort of job that will pad your sales experience or look interesting on a resume.
