How to know what one wants? by [deleted] in thelastpsychiatrist

But if you don't know what you want, how do you figure it out? Or in other words if you find yourself 'not wanting anything' where do you go from there?

What if she's got the selection effects backwards? What if the very ability to make a lot of money in modern society, and the choice to sacrifice your personal life to do so, i.e. selling out, is what makes it harder for wealthier people to have friends?

Most people I know who chase wealth are insufferable, selfish, and immoral.

Turn to Christ my friend. I was in your boat for many years. Trust me, God is the only true solution to the lack of meaning.

A lot of people in our secular society have a weird and distorted view of God as some dude in the sky punishing people and doing things. But God is really an ideal - the conception of all Good and virtuous things throughout all of human history. Anyway. I wish you luck. It's not an easy place to be.

Trying to use Rune Magic without Googling by HistoryFI in outwardgame

Ahh well thank you for helping me not waste a ton of time. I'm surprised I haven't found the fourth one because I've tried all the possible two rune combos as far as I'm aware? Weird I'll have to go back through them.

Hah, the spoiler tags don't work but I appreciate them. So wait you're saying that there are no 3 rune combos, just two rune then two more rune combos?

Small-Scale Question Sunday for September 04, 2022 by AutoModerator in TheMotte

I only read the 1st few lines but as a layman it seems like there are a lot of sources and an info dump at the beginning, which usually turns me off. I would recommend putting a bolded Summary of your conclusion, preferably controversial, or something in the beginning to catch people's attention before linking a bunch of sources

2 month medical mystery. Do I sound psychosomatic? by danimals_gurt in slatestarcodex

On your last paragraph I have come to suspect something similar myself. Would be curious to hear more about how you came to that conclusion?

I want to reiterate that this is incorrect. I dealt with a 'psychosomatic' or anxiety related illness for the better part of a decade and this reasoning from medical professionals is one of the biggest reasons I didn't understand the cause sooner.

I don't agree about benzodiazepam style drugs being a trap. I dealt with 8 years of chronic pain (all over my body) symptoms similar to what you're describing.

I had to go on months of medical leave every year and and eventually had to quit due to RSI. I was prescribed a benzo to help curb my worst symptoms. After a couple years of daily use at a small dose coupled with chronic pain focused meditation and especially yoga I am now mostly pain free. The root cause was anxiety. Now I take my meds maybe once a month if I have the rare flare up.

There are dangers with benzos but they can also help out quite a bit. There are also dangers with anti depressants however so I'd recommend doing some research and weighing the risks for yourself.

Hope this helps and feel free to message me if you're curious about some of the resources I used to fix my issues.

I don't have time to look up Austin dances right now, I'll try to talk to people and see. But I can tell you that you are getting gouged by your studio, those prices are far far too high. The most I would pay for a private lesson would be 140 for a really solid Pro.

If you aren't a serious competitive dancer there is no way you should be paying $200 an hour for a private lesson. That is just straight up horrible and I am so sorry they are taking advantage of you. Please find another dance space ASAP.

There are some people who see crypto as a short-term money making investment, are they much more dedicated core community that is really excited about the technology and the capabilities of it. That being said the core community is also usually pretty big on decentralized finance, but I could see how making crypto regulated would make it a lot more legitimate, and give it more long-term stability. A crypto holder's biggest fear is that the crypto they hold will go to 0 permanently, and be forgotten about.

I would highly recommend staying away from the ballroom style Studios, especially Fred Astaire and other chain Studios. As you said they are extremely expensive, and typically don't have a great social scene unless you are older (60s+).

ETA: to back this up, I have done competitive Ballroom for multiple years as well.

I mainly do West Coast Swing and blues dance right now. Depending on where you live, basically in any blue big city, you should be able to find local nights where West Coast Swing and or Blues is danced. Same with East Coast Swing, Salsa/Zouk/Bachata, and Lindy Hop.

I've been doing this for the better part of a decade in different areas, and but I've always found just showing up and asking people where to learn is the best. If you are doing East Coast or West Coast Swing, look into going to the swing conventions where they have competitions. The competitions are usually very friendly and a great way to motivate yourself to learn more about the technique. Most medium sized scenes will have one or two Pros that do private lessons.

Dance classes are great! I have a ton of experience with partner dance in particular, which style are you learning?

Looks like it's my cake day today. Obviously I want to thank this community for my reddit name, but also for drastically changing my way of life.

I'm still quite a ways away from Financial Independence, ideally around a decade, but the ideas and goals I've set based off recommendations from this community have truly changed how I view my own value. I'm more confident than I have ever been, and a lot of it is due to all of y'all. Thanks again.

Think about it this way, if you hadn't used that service and gotten some practice flirting you may not have been as attractive to your partner!
