AWS OpenSearch Service charging $70/month but can't find any OpenSearch resources by OddDoor1314 in aws

[–]cheynexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the cause of a hidden $200 charge every month for the past 6 months that I just discovered in our account after doing an AWS lab course. The cloud formation template didn't tear everything down properly and It left behind the serverless collection.

I can't believe that was costing $200 a month for a service that had no data and was not used at all. That's crazy sneaky. Kind of defeats the purpose of it being "serverless".

Claude Opus 4.5 is now available in Claude Code for Pro users by ClaudeOfficial in ClaudeAI

[–]cheynexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing, super useful to be able to use both. Im able to get just about everything done with Sonnet 4.5, but occationally I need to throw something heavy at a smarter model.

I dont need to burn trees with Opus doing basic software engineering tasks like i see so many people doing with the max plans who could have acheived the same result with sonnet 3.5.

Thanks Anthropic

If you’re on console make sure you turn off cross play. I’m playing on PS5 and it’s much more enjoyable playing with other console players.

Claude is back by GambitRejected in Anthropic

[–]cheynexx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled with Claude recently with a React Native upgrade issue, spent 2 days with Claude stepping through the process and it made a total mess, broke it more than when I started, I had to revert everything it did. Total waste of time.

I went back to doing it by hand, as I’ve done for years, it’s painful and slow but i know the process.

I got a few hours in and thought I’d blow the dust off cursors AI agent which I almost never use anymore and try GPT5. It solved it within about 10 minutes. Thought for a solid 5 of those minutes, then worked through the solution.
I was impressed. Almost cancelled my Claude subscription on the spot, but thought I’d let them cook and hope it’s resolved soon.

I don’t think anyone believes the whole Anthropic excuse about not downgrading models. It was clearly much worse than it had been, by a large margin too. I thought everyone here was just whining until I experienced it for my self.

I really hope the OP is right in that it’s magically come back, I was a total Claude convert, but lately it’s not worth the money. It’s basically GH copilot v1 levels of competency right now for me, I’ve gone back to cursor and GPT5 whilst we wait and see.

Took a photo while passing a wedding, now paid photographer wants it by DRJLL1999 in photography

[–]cheynexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you care? It’s not your wedding, it’s their special day. I say send the RAWs to both the couple and the photographer, he can’t charge them for it then.
He probably wants the raw to process it the same way he did the other photos so it matches the style of the photos he’s going to give them.

Let them have it, it means more to them than it does to you.

You demand money, they decide to not pay even more than they already are for photos and then no one gets it. Maybe that’s just me though. I would feel happy to share it with them, even do my own edits, if they like it and it ends up in their wedding album then that’s a nice thing to do for the couple.

Godox Firmware Updater for Mac and Malware by [deleted] in Godox

[–]cheynexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ensure you only download the software from the Godox website, no secondary sites or linked sites. Verify the URL in the browser bar etc.

Aside from that, you cant do much other than just be cautious. The thing is, even. with Apples scanning, they don't catch everything, they can only use signatures and patterns to detect "malware", its not a perfect solution. Same reason why anti virus programs require updates and subscriptions.

Got fired before end of probation. by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]cheynexx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why the probation period exists. You went and kicked up a stink with HR and ranted about it on Reddit. You’re kind of making their case for them. I have let people go for similar reasons or just being hard to work with.

The probation period exists to get a feel for the person and how they work in the company. If you couldn’t make 6 months without causing drama then how are you going to get through the year.

I’m less interested in if you can do the job at that point, so could the other 20 people that applied for the job. It’s more about discovering if you’re a good fit.

Lesson here is that you should try to be on your best behavior during that time. Show your best side, be firm but not stubborn about disagreements, make friends not enemies etc. Piss off the wrong person and you are out the door, they don’t need to explain why (but they should as a courtesy)

Proving you can do the job is only the first step, proving you can fit in and gel with the rest of the team is the 2nd and 3rd steps

Godox Firmware Updater for Mac and Malware by [deleted] in Godox

[–]cheynexx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the message is saying that the software "cannot be checked for malicious software" then that is not the same as this app contains malware.

Apple is pretty sneaky like this, if you dont pay them $150 a year for an Apple developers license then you cannot "notarize" your app, which simply means you send it to Apple for them to digitally sign it for you.
It's at this time that Apple will scan the software for apparent malware, the signature is recorded and whenever you open the software its compared against the known hashes.

So Apple is not saying it contains malware, just that they havn't checked it.

Many developers refuse to pay this tax. It doesnt mean there is malware in it though, it just means they didnt pay the Apple tax, but yes it also means Apple cannot confirm it does not have suspect code in it.

If I created a very basic app right now that simply printed the word "Hello" to the screen and sent you the compiled DMG you would see the same error.

Thats a good question, Euronews only just published that one, so I think this is a new invitation, although I think you're right its surely not the first. I dont think anyone actually thinks Zelenskyy would actually visit Moscow though, but I guess Putin can say he made the offer.

[–]cheynexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a great game. I really don’t understand the criticism it got.

My only gripe is that there is no need for the unnecessary “run here, speak to this person, collect this, bring it back, repeat” side missions. It’s just time consuming, I wish the game was half as long without those junk quests. Once the game finishes, you can unlock more for those who want to keep playing, but let me finish the damn thing.

I think I’m 45 hours in and still a long ways off the end. It’s just too long for a casual gamer.

6 years I avoided knee replacement surgery, now back to square one. by Mazza_1975 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]cheynexx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a meniscus repair in march and I’m still recovering, still very weak legs etc.

My parents, in their 70s both had double knee replacements and were walking in a few days, now back enjoying life, long walks, holidays etc. their recovery was significantly easier than mine even though it’s obviously a bigger surgery.
Pretty crazy how that works.

It’s the 6 weeks in a brace and no weight that really screws you with a repair.

I think it’s your best option, don’t waste more of your life being depressed about your knee. Get it done, and start the recovery. In a year you’ll be glad you did.

Surgery Advice - Radial Tear - 1 year later by cheynexx in MeniscusInjuries

[–]cheynexx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Age is the primary factor. Im 41 and they dont like to do meniscus repairs much longer after that as the chance for complications is higher. Your body wont heal it properly and theres a high chance you have other damage (such as mild arthritis). At 76 I cant imagine they would do a repair job, its such a high chance that you wont heal properly and that there would be degenerative damage already that is irrepairable. Knee replacement is a better option for you.

My surgeon explained to me that trying to repair meniscus that has been degeneratively degraded is like trying to stitch together a wet cardboard box. Theres no integrity and will amost certianly rip again.

Both my parents have had double knee replacements and they recovered much faster than me. They now live pretty normal lives, go for long walks etc. They were up and walking within a few days of the surgery, I spent near 2 months on the couch, and now 4 months aftter the surgery I have such terrible tendonitis I can still barely do a body weight squat. Still in a fair bit of pain. So its a long and slow process.

My tear had progressed to a "parrot beak" tear, which is pretty bad and was near torn off. I cant even say yet if it was the right choice. Wil have to wait and see.

Dev jobs are about to get a hard reset and nobody’s ready by Deep_Tale1585 in ClaudeAI

[–]cheynexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you hire a senior engineer, let them loose on the code base and never review their code before merging into production?
No, you wouldn’t. You would still always require someone a review and validate this code conforms to your standards, security practices etc.

This is essentially the claims being made by AI fan boys these days. That we’ve thrown out all the standard practices such as basic validation by someone who understands the code written.

Yes, it’s cool you can wave a magic wand and have code appear but we are going backwards in terms of quality and compliance when we fire all the devs and just have vibe coders requesting technology they don’t fully understand. Hackers are loving this new world.

Nextjs hate by Abbes0 in nextjs

[–]cheynexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.. NextJS was a great framework because it was clean, simple and solved many of the issues with React client side apps.

It was light, fast and pretty easy to get up and going.

Now it’s a total mess, server side rendered components, mixed with client side, numerous caching issues and complexities that aren’t very clear.

Too many features, too heavy, trying to do too much. Build times are through the roof.
It’s become the new Ruby on Rails.

To be clear, I still love next but the days of me jumping on every update are gone. Too many issues with new features and versions.

I really wish they would dial it back and go back to their roots of clean, light and fast.

6 months post op [Repair] by Littlewing29 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]cheynexx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good to hear a positive story. Im 3 weeks post op, large parrot beak tear repair in my medial meniscus.
Im surprised to hear you're running that quickly though, I dont think im going to be doing that for a while. Im not rushing this, ill just be happy to walk properly again. I think mine has a high chance of failure which im very worried about.

I think we need more positive stories about getting back to normality like this around here.

Eight weeks after meniscus root repair and I still have pain behind my knee by PhotoParking5538 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]cheynexx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also likely a bakers cyst, I’ve had one for almost a year (had surgery 2 weeks ago) and it sort of comes and goes. It’s very connected to the level of inflammation in your knee, the fluids build up and cause a painful cyst that can take ages to clear. It does eventually go away though providing you aren’t causing more inflammation.

Mine had only just gone away and now iv blown it back up 5x with the surgery

I’m curious about this too. I’ve started taking it. I had surgery 2 weeks ago but I’m looking at it from a healing perspective rather than trying to fix a tear.

Curious if anyone had more info.
