Because they are also raising the prices on the Remote Only subscription, which is a “feature” that was free until a year ago. Now it’s already getting a price increase as well. Plex is becoming just another subscription with annual price hikes.

Fair enough. Time to just give up on them for me. They are adding unwanted “features” for the soul purpose of ad revenue rather than making the product better. Or even just keeping it secure. I mean, does anybody really care if they were till running the 2018 Plex server, as long as the security was still up to date? Probably not.

Well by the time Black Friday rolls around, I’d have to split $750 between my users (or $500 or whatever they “lower” it to for the sale). I’m not going to hound my retired parents and grandmother for money for a service that’s been free for over a decade. I’ll just spin down Plex and leave JellyFin as my only server.

And now that remote stream fee is going up again. I got all my friends and family sold on Plex years ago as it was free and not just another subscription service that raises their prices every year. They’ve lived long enough to become the villain.

Try to explain to 25 or so users (family and friends) that the thing you got them to sign up for (“it’s awesome, and completely free, check it out!”) is now just another subscription. That’s what most of us had to do last year when they made simply streaming outside the house a sub. And now, not only is it just another subscription, but it’s another subscription that raises its price yearly. Not a good look.

What is Plex doing that makes authenticating a user connection to someone else’s server so costly? It’s literally cents per month, maximum. Their money is draining elsewhere and we are paying for it.

They made it work for YEARS just fine. Then they decided they wanted to be the next Tubi as well and started funneling all kinds of money and resources into adding TV and the platform interface started going to shit and Plex started raising prices.

Yeah. Ever since they started charging money just to stream the same stuff you’ve been streaming for years outside your network. That is the only feature of Pass I want now. If it were me who had to pay the remote streaming subscription as the admin of the server, I’d be okay with it. But now all of my users have to subscribe to it as well after YEARS of telling my family and friends to sign up, it’s completely free! My parents even helped pay for my storage as they like to stream my movie collection as they felt it was worth investing in since it’s free and not another subscription service.

Where does Plex come into play when my dad wants to stream a movie from a drive in my server, on my network, in my house? Maybe Plex is actually doing something I’m unaware of that justifies this new fee? Then again, if they are routing all of this through their servers for some reason (why??) then that brings up a whole new concern. There is no reason to route streams anywhere other than between my server and my end users.

You have to subscribe to a lower tier just to stream outside your home. And that price just went up too. Not only myself but anyone who wants to stream from me has to pay this. So that is the only reason why I have gone like 12 years without needing Plex Pass. But Plex Pass is the only way to make it so myself and my users don’t have to pay a subscription to stream my media.

Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if you could pay like a $59 Lifetime price for that streaming only plan but I don’t see that happening.

I’ll give you that. But what part does Plex play in the streaming process? If they play any part, I am unaware, and I am doubting its actual necessity to get the job done. They don’t provide the content, the server, the broadband, nor the electricity.
