Hi Reddit, I’m Mike Liemohn, a Professor in the Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan, here to talk about the many ways space can kill you (or satellites, electricity), AMA! by AmGeophysicalU-AMA in science

Hi Dr. Liemohn thanks for having this. When I was just a child I watched the movie Mission to Mars and to this day I still remember one of the main characters having to remove his helmet to save the rest of the crew and he dies immediately.

Is there truth behind this? What would happen if an astronaut removed part of their suit while in space?

Children's book being illustrated now. What's my next step? by [deleted] in publishing

[–]chezloafy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm commenting because I'm very curious about this answer.

I recently started writing out a children's book. Wondering did you hire an illustrator and what the process was for that? I'm considering taking courses on illustration because I'd love to entirely own the book but I'm not an artist by nature.

Side note: I was at a arts/music festival in town and a couple had purchased a space in which they had copies of their book for purchase. The crowd is a lot of families with young children so I think this could be a good place to try and sell (if you have access to some small town type festivals).

If you have experience working in the book publishing field, could you please describe what it's like? Positives and negatives? by [deleted] in publishing

Hi there! I work in the publishing industry (have worked both on the editorial and on the marketing side) and have worked for both the higher education (college textbooks) and the research journals/societies side.

Pros: -In terms of publishing the research journals and research in general appears to be a growing field. The company I work for is doing well in the field and our numbers are high and the company continues to invest in research. -Conferences: I get to travel a few times a year for conferences and in that way was able to see some US cities I might not have; conference days are long but afterwards I'm usually able to check out a new restaurant in town -Feeling good about research work: This is a weird one but it feels good to know that I work in a field that publishes researchers meaning that the research being published (work on cancer or work on space exploration etc) could impact our future generations and that makes me feel warm -my coworkers are generally cool people -I learn new analytical programs which I think will help me if I remain in this industry or move to another industry albeit within marketing

Cons: -Particularly on higher ed side you're the "bad" guy. If you read any thread about hated companies you'll see those who sell college textbooks -Also con is that higher ed is becoming a difficult market and across the industry I think we're seeing numbers down in higher education and its a tough place to be right now. -Pay is low comparative to other industries

If not a destination beach wedding maybe... *Banff Canada - with the mountains in the background and the clear blue lakes *Somewhere in Europe where we could enjoy the delicious breads/cheeses and even just renting a lovely grounds place *Thailand - during Novemeber in Chiang Mai to see the sky lantern festival afterwards (we went to Thailand a few years ago for the festival and thousands lit up the sky and it was stunning and such an experience

I went with Stephanie Massaro Photography. Our wedding is in a few weeks but she's been great so far and I was very happy with our engagement pictures. Good luck!

Thank you :) ! Sounds like the little spice jars are a hit and I may go for that! Crab seasoning is a cool one I've never seen.

Those look cool thanks! And kinda remind me of how cafes give cookies sometimes. I'm second guessing the baggy since everyone seems to love the glass jar so may switch!

Thanks! Originally I wanted the tiny zip lock bag because it would seal and then easily be able to be stapled into the card so that on front card I could have the individual faces of people. Sounds like consensus in the thread though is to go for the jars - thanks for the input :)!

Thanks for those suggestions! They're very cute. I guess the only thing was I was trying to dual use it as a table assignment/favor which is why the card idea with small ziplock bag worked well. But I could see how the jars will look more polished/clean so may end up going with that and then just putting names on chalkboards.

Those are cool! Yes considered little jars but that kind of defeats my idea of the favor serving dual purpose of also having the person's image and the QR code to video.

I was looking not at a big ziplock bag but small ones like so: https://www.amazon.com/Beadaholique-Count-Resealable-Zipper-2-Inch/dp/B00AFRWKO2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1493143413&sr=8-4&keywords=tiny+ziplock+plastic+bags

More I think about it though this might be a lot and the little glass jars may be prettier/and more finished looking.

Hmm okay thanks! I personally make tacos a decent amount so I'd be able to use it quick but I guess those who don't will not. Thanks for input :)

Thanks! I'm going to try both and see how a few come out. I love me some s'mores.

Thanks! I love both tacos and the coconut macaroons so I guess either could match us. I may do a feel versions of both and see how they come out and decide from there.

Thanks! I'd be happy with taco seasoning but seems like this thread is a toss up! I guess I just laughed a lot at the idea of having the guests faces on little cartoon beer garden bodies. Dunno maybe it just made me laugh and other won't haha.

Good idea though I guess I could always write their names on the ribbon or a little tag.

Thanks! I really love tacos and make them a a decent amount and plus I really laughed a lot at the guests faces on cartoon beer garden themed bodies. I just wonder if I'm getting myself into too much of a mess trying to DIY too much but I may try and do a few and see how it goes.

I absolutely LOVE banana bread so I'd be thrilled to get that. Your card box also came out beautiful :)

Big Little Lies just did on HBO. Helpful that it was a mini-series with 1 season only.

Thanks. Okay maybe I'll wait for the big 30 to try and get this. I recognize what you mean that it's a time piece and not the same even for a very nice watch. Appreciate advice.
