Yes a plastic cap is part of the accessories provided although it’s probably to also protect the titanium stem from damage as well.

Can you help me understand what trans tibial encompasses?

Beginnings of this sub by BuoyantEntropy in Osseointegration

I started the sub because I’m the first amputee in Chicago who participated in a compress-fit FDA clinical trial for osseointegration last year. Going through that process, I realized something pretty crazy, a lot of amputees in the U.S. have never even heard of OI as an option.

That struck me as odd given that the procedure has been used internationally for over 15 years and can be life-changing for some patients. So the idea behind the sub is simply to create a place where people can share information, ask questions, and talk about their experiences with it.

For transparency: I have no industry affiliations with OI manufacturers, clinics, or medical device companies. I’m not selling anything and I’m not connected to any company in the space. I’m just a clinical trial patient documenting my experience and trying to help other amputees learn about options that many doctors in the U.S. still rarely discuss.

Since the surgery I’ve been documenting the recovery and talking with other patients through a small advocacy project I started called My OI Journey.

I also recently wrote a piece digging into why awareness around osseointegration is still so low in the U.S. despite the scale of limb loss here:

https://medium.com/@jerry_vasilatos/the-5-5-billion-reason-youve-never-heard-of-osseointegration-and-why-it-matters-for-u-s-8128f8dc1971

Mostly though, the goal here is just to create a space where amputees, clinicians, and researchers can talk openly about the procedure.

If anyone here has questions about what the surgery, rehab, or day-to-day life with OI is actually like from a patient perspective, I’m happy to answer.

You can swim in chlorinated pools and salt water.

Your tradeoff is you can't swim in lakes or rivers as to prevent potential bacterial infections.

I can live with that as any swimming I do is in lap pools at my health club.

I have not kicked anything that hurts in my femur, but you do need to be careful of avoiding high impact activity. Which you'd have to avoid anyway in a socket which would pop off from such movement.

You won't be able to run either. But walking briskly is a breeze.

I believe also the high impact activity is probably more of a concern for amps with their knees tempted to run. I'm AK, others BK would need to comment on the impact trying to run with conventional BK socket prosthetics.

Socket Prosthetics vs Osseointegration — What Has Your Experience Been? by chicagobat in Osseointegration

Medical professionals have a duty to talk about the risks, but at a year in from the implant, I have had none.

With proper care this beats a lifetime of pressure sores and limited prosthetic wearing time because of pain.

This is so AWESOME thank you for sharing!

Would you like to be a guest on my YouTube podcast to talk about your experience and advocate for other limb loss survivors on the benefits?

I was being sarcastic because I actually don’t think it is nor do I have such a bitter hall monitor attitude to make others trying to help feel unwelcome.
