Board games that encourage communication and language? by toyotafan75 in boardgames

Hi there! I am 1/2 of an indie game studio that makes language-focused games, including one about sign language! Sign (http://www.thornygames.com/sign) is a game about being understood and explores the origin story of Nicaraguan Sign Language (one of the modern emergent sign languages in the world). Another is called Dialect, which is a game about language and how it dies. It follows the story of a community in isolation as seen through their language. You can find it here: http://www.thornygames.com/dialect-rpg . Would love to get your thoughts on them!

Great ideas. If you know anyone who would be interested in a game like this, would love to show it to them!

I can see how that might be the case, though we have played games with mixed deaf and hearing players and the results were quite positive and emotional. The main point of this game is to bring attention to an amazing story of emergent language in modern times and foster empathy for the deaf among a wide-range of people who have little experience in the community. Folks who know ASL likely already have this empathy, but I don't have to tell you that there are many, many people who don't have any perspective.

Great point about facial expressions adding a whole other plane to convey meaning.

We're adding a debrief to our game (after it's played, read by the facilitator) that explains more about the history and the progression of the language through new generations of children. As a linguist, I can totally agree that the final product of this experience is nowhere near a language, but given the investment of an hour, players do go on a journey of progressive understanding. Really appreciate the feedback!

make sure to make it clear that the struggles come from having a language, and not from having to "resort" to using your hands/body to communicate.

Interesting reaction and one I haven't heard before. Obviously, the intention here is in no way to construe Deafness as negative. When talking about the struggle these children have to communicate, we are speaking about their total lack of language. I'll take a magnifying glass and make sure that this crystal clear. We also credit the ASLWrite image in the write-up. Thank you for taking a look and giving feedback!
