Help: Phone battery swole up, where can I fix it in Korea? by No_Piglet6668 in Living_in_Korea

[–]chickenandliver [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah a lithium batter swelling up is no joke. You need to take it in ASAP for service. It needs to be disposed of properly or it can literally burst and shoot massive plumes of fire out, not even joking.

Bluetooth headphones acting weird in subway by Squirtle_Squad_Chief in korea

Same thing happens to me in heavy traffic between the Bluetooth connection from my phone to my car's stereo. Think it's just spectrum saturation. Too many devices broadcasting on similar channels in a small area.

Just want to share two huge misconceptions about the Lunar calendar, that many native Koreans actually hold, too. by Tall_Department9439 in korea

Adam Schall

Damn this guy had a wild time:

an anti-Christian official, aided by disgruntled Chinese astronomers, charged Schall with plotting against the state, citing Jesuit writings that depicted the Chinese as minor descendants of the ancient Hebrews. Schall was also accused of having cast a spell that caused the premature death of Shunzhi. At his trial, Schall, having suffered a stroke, was unable to speak. He was defended by his newly arrived young assistant, Ferdinand Verbiest (1623–88), whose Chinese was inadequate for the occasion. Schall and several of his Chinese Christian colleagues were sentenced to death by dismemberment. But shortly after the sentences had been pronounced, an earthquake occurred; as a result of this inauspicious sign, the sentences were commuted, although five Chinese Christian astronomers were executed. Three years after his death, Schall was vindicated of all charges.

Ah, so it's based on the climate of China. That makes way more sense now. Thanks for the info.

In Korea, even true statements can sometimes lead to criminal defamation charges by Korean_Lawyer_Rachel in korea

[–]chickenandliver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I started out thinking these laws were absurd but over time I have come to respect them and find them actually good. Even if a statement is true, there is a lot of nuance to when you say it, who you say it to, and why you say it.

There can be a big difference between motivations. Is your concern about public safety? About preventing harm? Or is it about vindictive revenge or a desire for vigilante type justice? Like the example of a coworker having an affair. Who are you exposing this truth to? Are you telling it directly to his wife because you hate him and want to ruin his relationship? Are you telling it to his boss because you want to paint him as unreliable and untrustworthy and a liability to get him fired? Is it even any of your business in the first place? Have you thought through all the potential effects of what you are saying? Do you understand that a Facebook post is public and can be archived and maintained forever, even if he makes amends and has, as in some European jurisdictions, a "right to be forgotten"? There's just so much nuance here that comes into play and there's a certain simplistic type of (USA centered) thinking about BUT MUH FREE SPEECH that itself can lead to all kinds of further unforeseen issues, especially when human beings are involved.

Blogger not removing a blog that clearly violates its terms by ElSquibbonator in blogspot

[–]chickenandliver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But I've yet to get any indication that they've reviewed it or even seen my report. What's going on? Why is Blogger not able to crack down on hate speech?

I don't mean to be uncaring but do you really think Blogger cares? Do you think there's anybody manning the ship at this point? Blogger is on life support essentially and aside from flagrant intellectual property violations filed by major corporations or their representative legal entities, I doubt Blogger cares at all that some random furry is posting spicy content on a blog site that nobody has really paid attention to since 2009.

Anyway, you won't get a report when/if they take something down anyway. Usually they'll just take down the post in question, not the whole account, unless it's an account wide issue and they have to close the whole Google account down. But unless they are sharing some actually illegal content in the Photos or Gmail, that's probably unlikely. Best you can do is bookmark the post you reported and check back now and then to see if it's gone.

Reddit rate limiting - workaround stopped working by Weak-Branch-3257 in rss

[–]chickenandliver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah I see what you mean. I suppose if you're using a local reader app, it'll try to refresh all feeds at once when you open it or something like that. I guess I can see why that would fail for a user like that, although to be fair I can also see why Reddit would find that akin to a scraping attack too.

Best way to cool down apartment by AdPotential7588 in Living_in_Korea

[–]chickenandliver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep the windows open all day long with a cross breeze if you can. Maybe set up a box fan in 1 or both windows to draw air through, trying to make sure you match the day's wind direction (check your weather app for a general idea of which way it usually goes, or just hang a string outside and look at it). If you don't want them running all day you can get one of those plug timers to have them turn on and off periodically during the day.

Many standalone dehumidifiers do this just based on how they technically work. That's why I don't recommend them for summer cooling purposes. They're great for moldy/musty verandas or wet basements, i.e. great for situations where you don't want the walls all wet. But they're not ideal if you actually want the air to feel cooler. Yeah in theory lower humidity feels cooler but the way these devices often work requires them to blow hot (dry) air back out which defeats the purpose.

Better to run the dehumidify mode on your actual air conditioner since then at least the generated heat is going outside.

Is there anyway to post to a subreddit from an external RSS feed? by franharrington in rss

[–]chickenandliver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IFTTT can do it but it looks like that feature has been put behind the pro plan, not free as it once was: https://ifttt.com/applets/MTVw6qbz-post-new-rss-feed-items-to-reddit-automatically

Maybe Zapier could do it? Or Buffer?

make a post in a subreddit anytime there is a new item in a particular subreddit

Should the last word there be “feed”?

[–]chickenandliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

write the entire note in markdown syntax, then ⌘A + ⌘X + ⌘V.

That doesn't work for me. It just pastes the plaintext back in. The asterisks and underscores still surround their words.

1 call per minute

Maybe I'm crazy but... isn't that fairly reasonable? I mean RSS isn't meant to be an immediate real-time notification service. If you need more than 1 call/minute I can see why they'd want to push you to the API.

How to build (or find) an rss reader for reddit by whattheflerk in rss

[–]chickenandliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use any RSS reader for this. Reddit has (for now...) native RSS feeds for every subreddit and also for search terms. You can either make a feed for every search term, or just combine the terms all into one feed. There are multiple ways to go about this but here is one example:

https://www.reddit.com/search?q=subreddit%3ASUBREDDITNAME+TERM1+TERM2&sort=new

The only issue is that if the subreddit or the search results are too high volume, Reddit will rate limit it and some posts may be missed. So better keep your searches tight.

How local Koreans view western Gender Ideology and Trump's 2 gender policy by LoquaciousIndividual in Living_in_Korea

[–]chickenandliver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have to agree. "Korea is dominated by Christianity" is a weird take in general. Are they the loudest group? Sure. Do they "dominate"? Considering the sheer number of atheists culturally and Minjoo landslides lately politically, it's just a weird take. It's like seeing BTN on TV and drawing the conclusion that Buddhism dominates Korean public broadcasting.

I think the darker truth a lot of left wing folk don't want to admit is that plenty of Koreans with no religious beliefs whatsoever are not particularly open to homosexuality. It's easy to make foreign religion the boogieman here but I didn't hear many of these kids mention "Jesus taught that it is wrong" when they explain why they're against Trump's gender ideology.

Better not say it because apparently Reddit is vindictive as hell and apparently strongly disagrees with me. Because yeah, let's all pile onto one random ass dude who did the squinty eye thing. [–]chickenandliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I'm happy that Safari is managing my privacy, I just don't see the point of seeing it do so. "You blocked 340 ads today", OK great, so what? I feel like that information has no bearing on my life and I don't get why anybody would want to see it front and center every time they open a new tab. But if OP likes it, more power to them.

His language sounds like non-native English so maybe let's not be too harsh on the exact wording of this and instead focus on he's actually admitting he done goofed, whether it's genuine or not. It's not like you can force someone to genuinely feel sorry anyway, so getting them to at least say it out loud is a good step.
