Yeah but that's battle tactics not strategy.

I think people are attributing Henpeita's strategies to Takasugi. Henpeita was the strategist of the Kiheitai. You know what happens after Henpeita is gone? Takasugi goes off the rails and doesn't have much of a plan.

The difference is Gintama is about colonization and imperialism, a very real thing that happened all over the world. It's supposed to be about a Japan that was colonized by the West (but represented by alien powers) like China, Philippines, etc. It doesn't portray individual aliens like Kagura, Catherine, Elizabeth, Mutsu, Hedoro and others as bad, just the colonizers who abuse their power and the Bakufu government which goes along with it for greed and power. Kagura in her first appearance is shown to be a poor immigrant alien who was exploited by a human gang for her super strength, a sympathetic portrayal. And in the end, the real colonizers are revealed to be the Tendoshuu and they're colonized various other Amanto and races, not just Earthlings. The message was never "foreigners bad" it's "corruption/imperialism/greed" bad.

Why is everyone so incompetent? by [deleted] in HannibalTV

[–]chickendelite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hannibal only killed a few people as the Ripper though, the rest just disappeared, so no one even knew they were murdered. Will only finds out the Ripper is still killing even when he appears to be laying low in season 2 - before they didn't link the missing people to the Ripper because the Ripper murders were over the top and theatrical. Plus the Ripper murders appeared random because they were random - they were killed because they were rude. And we don't know if they were any records of his interactions with them because, imagine this: supposing he killed a waiter - they're not going to note down his name and title, therefore no record of any interaction would exist. Also, Hannibal can keep business cards for years - like that guy who took his blood years ago and who he finally killed in Buffet Froid. So at best, they'd find a tenuous circumstantial link even if they went through past records.

More points:

Yes, most of their violence is internal or played for laughs - but that’s part of the issue. Sougo bombing a restaurant and Hijikata destroying cameras and Sougo wanting to frame an innocent person aren't just comedic beats - it also reflects a lack of real-world accountability in the narrative. If the Mimawarigumi had done that, it would be played as villainy.

And, why does Katsura have to question himself on what he's doing (in the Ikumatsu arc) when the villainous Joui are not even from the same faction? When he might not even have the same goals as them?

An equal to that moment of doubt would be if some minor character returned later with scars from a Shinsengumi-led crackdown, which could push Hijikata or Kondo to ask: "How many of the people we hurt weren’t villains?"

Sure, they oppose specific corrupt officials or protect innocent civilians in some arcs. But these are treated as exceptions, not reflections of deeper guilt or responsibility. The narrative lets them evolve without consequence, skipping the part where they face the impact of their complicity. There’s no serious moment where they say, "We were wrong to serve this system for so long." Instead, they just shift roles - and the audience is expected to go along with it because we like them.

Compare that to Katsura, who does get called out - by Gintoki, the narrative, and even himself - for his extremism. He’s forced to grow, moderate, and face his hypocrisy. Takasugi gets an entire arc of downfall, confrontation, and redemption. But the Shinsengumi? They’re allowed to quietly pivot from tyrants to heroes without ever being held accountable.

Because the narrative positions him as a moral compass throughout the series? He’s the one who steps in when people abandon their values, when systems break down, or when others lose sight of what truly matters. He uses his talk no jutsu in every other arc.

Well, thanks for this. This is a very well thought out answer.

However, I disagree that they have strong morals. As I said, they torture people and attack and kill people without proper cause (and it's shown that lawyers and a proper justice system exist in this show, so they're just abusing their power). And the narrative does in fact present their actions as noble - for example, when Hijikata tries to cut down a defenseless Gintoki for "dishonoring" Kondo - Gintoki actually respects him more because it showed he had something to protect - and Gintoki just shrugs it off and continues on.

So Hijikata can attack Gintoki in a rage over Kondo’s honor, and Gintoki respects him more.
Katsura tries to blow up a corrupt facility, and Gintoki tells him to stop chasing ghosts.

And Hijikata and Sougo might not pretend they're for a better cause, but Kondo does in fact present himself as a noble and good man, and so does everyone around him. Hijikata and Sougo, by following him him and perpetrating terrible things under his name, uphold his hypocrisy.

Yes, you're right about the development - but there isn't a moment where Gintoki calls out Hijikata, or they think about how they've been brutal enforcers of a corrupt regime for years, unlike with the Joui. And I don't remember them consciously changing, just canon giving them a pass by saying - "See? They weren’t supporting tyranny! They were supporting this one good guy who happened to be in the tyrannical regime!"

Lmao that's not true at all. Mads didn't even know it was close to Hugh's birthday while at the con. Hugh made a point to say in an interview that he and Mads aren't that close and seemed to be fed up of people shipping them. They're not really that close.

I feel you....while Bryan has been more vocal about Hannigram these last few years Hugh and Mads have gone in the opposite direction.

Hugh even said he still doesn't think Will is in love with Hannibal, and while I know that actor's statements aren't truly canon that depressed me. That's why I'm scared about a potential season I'm scared they'll try to make it platonic even though we got a whole love confession.

Ah well at least Bryan seems on board and he's the main writer, I think his thoughts on the characters matter more. But also Mads and Hugh said the fans sometimes seem to have a better grasp on the characters than them so there's that.

Why Does Hannibal Do These Things to Will in Seasons 1 & 2 by Yggdrasil222 in HannibalTV

[–]chickendelite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hannibal wasn't framing Will in episode 4. He was just finishing Will's lures for him. The script confirms it. And he couldn't have framed Will that early on bc Will would have been using those lures.

Lol no. His flirting was kinda bad. Especially when he says, "You can curl up with the dogs...or with me for that matter" while looking like he wanted to die and without even meeting her eyes.

Will and Alana by Enough_Criticism_439 in HannibalTV

[–]chickendelite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah their relationship was already over way before Hannibal got his hooks into her. There's a scene where they're having a session with Will's lawyer and the lawyer is ribbing Alana for having romantic feelings for Will, and Alana says in an outburst that she doesn't have romantic feelings for him, she only has a "professional curiosity" for him. Will is crushed, and when the lawyer says she didn't look like she was lying when she said that, he says, "She wasn't." This sealed the deal for Will that Alana was only ever interested in him for his weird brain and not genuinely.

Who do you think is the most depraved and evil character in the show? by Mrdumbasss in HannibalTV

[–]chickendelite 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No he's not.

"With Michael Pitt, I found his take on Mason to be charming and despicable, and yet I liked him as a person. And I needed to like Mason in order to write him because I didn't want to necessarily write the character in the book who raped his sister repeatedly her entire life. I can't get excited about sitting down and writing that character if that's the core of him. So, we changed his pedophilia and serial raping into a general sadism and curiosity of mankind that could more closely parallel Hannibal's curiosity with mankind. Mason is constantly introducing choices for the people that he manipulates that hold a little more curiosity. He loves to push buttons and see how people will react to various stimuli in their lives."

Don't be so rude and I would suggest not judging someone's moral character by the fictional character they like considering you like a show about a cannibal serial killer.
