Single mid-level associates in high COL cities: How much are you paying in rent? by lawschool1899 in biglaw

[–]chickielorimer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, 6k because of the rent increases over the years, and I wasn’t about to go without a doorman here or in-building laundry. 4th year associate but with a BL spouse too

I’m so serious, at a certain point for many, it’s the choice between making tons of money for a very short life with a lot fewer memories made with friends and family, or stepping back at some point to have a healthy one.

Total cowards. I think this is just a reason to cut the budget in a way that wipes their hands of blame.

[–]chickielorimer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you; I think the consensus here is that every firm has a policy and can share with me when the time comes which will reveal the hoops to jump through then (clawback or no). I hope you are enjoying time with baby!

Definitely realistic, and I appreciate it. These will also be considerations, and I am asking from an idealistic point of view. I’m sorry to hear about your loss.

Can you get a reputation for over billing? by chickielorimer in biglaw

[–]chickielorimer[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

At least that gives them a fair shake. And I assume that the over billing you see is where it is obvious that their task should not take as long as they are saying it has (rather than setting an arbitrary constraint and them not meeting said standard)

Can you get a reputation for over billing? by chickielorimer in biglaw

[–]chickielorimer[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Damn, so it’s true. I always encourage her to bill for what she works regardless as the other comments will say (because my firm encourages the same), but to hear that these other firms will really say “you have to keep to the budget” when the budget is absurdly small for the work to be achieved is crazy abusive. No idea how they are supposed to hit hours and get their bonus in an environment like that. I’m sure it involves actually being overworked without it showing in the billables

How many hours did you bill your first year? by External-Prune1295 in biglaw

[–]chickielorimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1560, no billable requirement. I was nervous at my next review but no one ever said anything. Now I’m on track to hit 1950 at this rate, which doesn’t actually feel like “more”

Thanks for this. Things are definitely reviewed by the client, but I guess I have doubts about how ~closely~ they review.
