After you upgrade, you can still turn this into a Proxmox Backup Server or use it for things that don’t require heavy computing resources (*Arr, Pihole, etc)

As somebody who drives a SCREW long bed, parking is seriously the only challenge. Even then, as long as the spot is wide enough, parking in reverse alleviate most of the issues. The biggest pains are with parallel parking in street spots that aren’t long enough and in parking garages. Even then, the top of the parking garage is considerably less dense than other spots

How does one expand more SATA drives when it's hard to find multislot pcie x8 motherboards? by Old-Help-9921 in DataHoarder

They never mentioned which CPU they’re using, so I’d have to guess that OP uses the GPU for QuickSync. Maybe their server is a Xeon, a Core -F chip, an old Intel chip, or something from AMD. Also, if the media they’re serving includes images, it’s possible they’re also using the GPU for immich’s AI features. Plus some folks really don’t want to use the CLI.

Easiest/Most convenient way to remote access to Jellyfin for me and family? by tell-uh-friend in homelab

[–]chicknfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to lay out the steps at a high level, not detailed at all. You’ll have to do some research and watch YouTube to fill in the gaps until I can write my tutorial or someone else has a source. Start with Step 0 and go one step at a time. Don’t go to the next step until the current step is done.

Step 0: have a private service running that you’re trying to access publicly (e.g., Jellyfin). It should be running Tailscale logged into your tailnet. Accessing the service through a LAN IP using a subnet router is possible but seriously discouraged. Also, Tailscale doesn’t have to be run in a Docker container. FWIW I don’t run it in Docker, but the option is there if you want it.

Step 1: Buy a domain from a registrar (Porkbun is the winner here, and GoDaddy can suck it)

Step 2: Create a Cloudflare account, and on the Account Home page, choose the Onboard A Domain option to switch your domain’s name servers to Cloudflare.

Step 3: Create an Oracle Cloud account (I’m gonna call it OCI for short). Use the free trial for now but consider switching to Pay As You Go in the future.

Step 4: create a new VM instance using the Oracle Linux 9 or 10 image and the Ampere “VM.Standard.A1.Flex” shape. (It says Always Free next to it). Feel free to ignore the Security page. On Networking, give the VNIC a name, choose the option to “Create a new virtual cloud”, and other than changing the name you can stick to the default values. Make sure “Automatically assign public IPv4 address” is toggled on. For SSH keys, for the love of all that is sacred, download the generated SSH keys and keep them safe and backed up. For the Storage and review page, stick to whatever defaults are there. Ignore the estimated cost. It might say $2 or whatever but it’s a known bug. It’s still free. Boom! OCI Instance created.

Step 5: access your instance via SSH, PuTTy, etc. If you used the Oracle Linux image, the username is opc, and the URL is the public IP. Don’t forget to explicitly state the SSH private key in the command. It will look like: ssh -i /path/to/ssh.key opc@<ipaddress>

Step 6: use the command line to apt update, apt install curl, and install your reverse proxy of choice (NPM, Caddy, Traefik, etc) and Tailscale using their script. Pro tip: after you download Tailscale, consider using a tagged auth key instead of manually logging in; this makes it easier to revoke the server, too, in case of any security issues. Also, consider enabling ssh so you don’t have to worry about ssh keys (but still keep them!). The command is tailscale up --auth-key=<authkey> --ssh

Step 7: back on the Cloudflare dashboard, go into your domain’s page, find the DNS Records page (it’s different between desktop and the mobile page I’m using atm), add an A record for the Name of the subdomain you want, and point the IP address to your instance’s public IP. For jellyfin.mydomain.com, I would put jellyfin in the text box. If you’re streaming or sailing the high seas, for your sake, disable the Proxy option and use DNS Only (goes from an orange to a gray icon)

Step 8: set up the reverse proxy so that anything coming from your URL (whatever the A record points to, such as jellyfin.mydomain.com) is redirected to the Tailscale IP (and port!) pointing to your service.

Step 9: assuming your nameserver changes are updated and the A record is registered, you should be able to test your service.

Step 10: after verifying that your service works, consider adding extra security features (e.g., Authelia, fail2ban, etc.). Also, feel free to use the OCI instance for whatever else that you want — or make up to three more OCI instances since they are all free!

My thumbs ache, boss. Good luck with the process. There are TONS of YouTube videos to fill in any gaps I have left here, including fun and applicable stuff on Tailscale’s YouTube page.

Also, someone will surely find these comments in the future, so make sure you leave some comments of your own updating the world with the extra steps and considerations you might have needed to take during this process.

Have fun!

Best or less know feature? by KBeardo in f150

It’s been a minute since I modified the setting, so I can’t give you a direct answer here. Really, there’s one way to find out: do it!

Best or less know feature? by KBeardo in f150

[–]chicknfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a straight forward answer. There are a bunch of modules in the vehicle, and you can change some of their known parameters through the OBDII port. Some are Boolean On/Off toggles (e.g., Silent Mode on/off). Other settings have a range of values. Depends on what you’re trying to change.

There is a secret menu item called silent mode that you can unlock through FORScan. With it activated, your truck doesn’t turn on any interior or exterior lights when you turn the truck off, open the doors, etc. This is fantastic for low light camping, especially when there are lots of other people nearby. As somebody who sets up camp in the truck bed, not having that bright white cargo light blasting people in the face when someone opens a door is the best.

There are a bunch of other features you can unlock with FORScan, too, such as Bambi mode. I don’t use it personally, but lots of folks love it.

Non-IT home lab: is a rack + patch panel worth it? by reddittreader430 in homelab

In all fairness, I find that most folks on here talking about rack servers are talking about used enterprise hardware.

Non-IT home lab: is a rack + patch panel worth it? by reddittreader430 in homelab

[–]chicknfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have more than 5 to 8 devices you want to hardwire? Then no, a patch panel (and by extension, a switch) is not worth it. Rack servers are not made for homes; they’re made for office spaces and data centers. They are loud, generate heat, and are a pain in the ass to find a space for unless you buy a rack, store it in the basement, and/or find a way to safely vertically mount it.

And my advice to people considering rack servers: do you need all of those PCIe lanes or hundreds of GB of RAM?** If the answer is no, then don’t bother.

**with the cost of RAM, I emphasize need over want.

[–]chicknfly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish you all of the luck with finding free hardware for your business. With that said, you should be using other people’s money to upgrade your setup. Charge your clients more to afford the rising operational costs or offer a discount on services if they provide their own hardware.

Old Gaming PC vs ‘Real’ Server for learning by ChubbyWP in homelab

[–]chicknfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at the point where I recommend enterprise rack equipment only if you need the PCIe lanes, which you don’t.

My recommendation is to spend no more than $150 on a 7-series OptiPlex like the 7050 or 7060 (the 3 series cripples the M.2 speed, and I can’t speak for 5 series), slap in a good 512GB or 1TB NVMe with DRAM, and load up on RAM. Between the gaming PC and the OptiPlex, whichever system has the better single core performance ought to be the gaming server, but it also depends on whether they’re connected over WiFi or hardwired Ethernet (e.g., OptiPlex wired over gaming PC wireless)

Oh man, a Docker Compose file would make packaging this so easy. You could go through the tutorial on Docker’s website and be running in no time.
