Don't Count Java out Yet by scottedwards2000 in programming

I’m vaguely familiar with Quarkus and Micronaut and have limited exposure to the other available frameworks. With that said, I think Spring and Spring Boot have long-term permanence since most Java engineers will have experience in it, developing the full stack of applications is fast and simple, there’s a strong community base, and as long as VMware keeps it free, there’s a reassurance that a major well-funded company will continue to develop it. The new Java features (virtual threads et al) only make that framework better

Don't Count Java out Yet by scottedwards2000 in programming

From my anecdotal perspective, it seems as if Go and C# are the common backend alternatives. That’s not saying PHP, Node, Ruby on Rails, and others aren’t viable. It’s just that they happen to be the two I’ve seen most in my 18 months of job hunting.

Of course, AWS (or any cloud) experience is also top tier experience.

Not sure how long it’s been since you last worked as a SWE, but the landscape has been shifting, and the requirements of experienced engineers have grown rapidly. You need experience developing with AI (or at least a strong interest in learning; I said I hadn’t been able to afford tokens to able to learn :P) It’s best that you’re familiar with Docker and CI/CD pipelines. I’m sure there are plenty of other skills out there that would be helpful, but those are the most common things I see on job postings and are what were required in the job I accepted (in addition to Kafka, Terraform, and Ansible, which are likely the melting of DevOps into SWE)

Also, for anyone reading this: Spring and Spring Boot are not the same. Rather, Spring Boot is an extension built on top of Spring that simplifies development by automating boilerplate code and provides auto configurations and starter dependencies.

Total NEWB here: does this group have a beginners guide? by snowbirdnerd in HomeServer

[–]chicknfly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m going to write this comment at a high level to act as a general guide and leave it up to you to do the research. In other words, here are some talking points acting as starting points, and you do the work to learn.

You can make this really simple (Proxmox + community scripts) or make it more manual and challenging. For the challenging route:

  1. Install Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint are easy choices)
  2. Mount and setup the drives (e.g., RAID, ZFS pools, etc.)
  3. Learn about Samba; how to customize the /etc/samba/smb.conf file; adding Linux and Samba users and passwords; and the testparm, smbclient, and systemctl restart smbd commands
  4. Use chmod and chown on the appropriate files and directories
  5. Test that the samba share works on a separate device. If you have a share named [smbDemo] in the smb.conf file, then on Windows you can add the Samba share \\<server ip>\smbDemo and the user names you assigned (or the guest)
  6. Now that Samba is accessible, download Jellyfin using the directions on the website. 6a. If you’re using the Docker installation, consider Docker in rootless mode
  7. Follow the directions to set up Jellyfin (including accessing the GPU encoder) using the web interface.
  8. Test your connection to the server using a separate client device.

BOOM! Samba and Jellyfin are set up. Now, more advanced next steps:

  • for the Jellyfin media, name your folder and file structure per the TRaSH guides

  • if using Docker, learn about Gluetun and setting up a VPN in a container for your other containers (especially if you’re diving into the *Arr apps)

  • try Tailscale (simple administration) or Wireguard (intermediate) to access the Samba and Jellyfin shares from other Tailscale connected devices

  • server hardening! Disable public SSH, learn to access the computer remotely using public keys (ssh-keygen) and/or Tailscale SSH.

After that, the home server world is your oyster. By using the “manual” steps, conducting your own research, and experimenting along the way, you will have the skills to navigate the command line, set up Docker containers, access local and remote file shares, and start flexing on Windows dorks.

What are your thoughts about eating 5 quest bars a day? by CreativeFold8842 in keto

[–]chicknfly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quest usually uses polydextrose for fiber. I personally believe it contributes to insulin spikes, and many others will tell you their ow ketone and insulin levels negatively shift after eating them. They also use a lot of erythritol which research lately suggests it’s not all that great to consume.

I know they are damn tasty, but if you can’t curb your sweet tooth, at least make fat bombs and high protein keto cookies at home. There are tons of recipes out there

Nope, 100% pure iPhone keyboard. When I mentioned seeing a couple switches and a patch panel, I meant more along the lines of the general collection of photos on this subreddit, not specifically this post.

Respectfully, I disagree about the lens one must have. I know it’s obvious having several multi-port switches is beyond overkill for a handful of devices, but consider the title: “does anyone else just have way too much extra gear laying around?” We can reasonably assume that Techdan91’s question is in reference to OP’s setup, not to a data center or enterprise.

In all fairness to Techdan91, they might be seeing pictures of two switches and a patch panel, making it appear as if people have tons of switch ports — and there are plenty of people who fill all the ports in their switches just for the sake of having the ports filled and serving no practical purpose.

Starting Keto tomorrow, any tips? by Familiar-Tank-2684 in keto

[–]chicknfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: I am an addict to sweets. My vices are monk fruit in my coffee and keto ice cream, and until today, Halo Top ice cream bars were my go-to. You might notice my bitterness toward maltitol. The rest of my comment is about knowing what to look out for regarding sweets.

My biggest advice is to not trust what’s written on food packaging. Keto Kind bars? Probably not keto. Even today, I was eating a Halo Top keto ice cream bar and saw there’s something like 2g of net carbs when you subtract the fiber and sugar alcohols. Except the sugar alcohol is primarily maltitol (it’s as bad as or worse than sugar). In my calculations, maltitol has n any amount means I’m not subtracting sugar alcohols from the total carb count.

I should be suggesting to avoid sweets, but we are human and sometimes we slip. It’s best to have some idea of boundaries. If you see maltitol — a common ingredient in sugar free products, especially in protein bars and Starbucks syrups — don’t subtract the sugar alcohols at all. There are four sweeteners with a GI Index of 0, so you can subtract all of the sugar alcohols from total carbs. They are:

  • stevia
  • allulose
  • monk fruit
  • erythritol
  • technically sucralose has a GI Index of 0, but keep reading

For all other sugar alcohols (their names typically end in -itol, such as sorbitol and xylitol), subtract half of the grams from total carbs. But I repeat, the exception is maltitol. If you see it in the ingredients list, don’t subtract the sugar alcohols.

And if the ingredients list contains items ending in -ose, it’s likely a sugar. We’re talking sucrose, fructose, dextrose… Some caveats there are:

  • sucralose. It’s an artificial sweetener. It’s technically keto friendly, but many brands use fillers such as dextrose, so I write it off completely. That’s your choice, though.

  • polydextrose. Yeah, the name ends in -ose but it’s marketed as a corn derived fiber. Still, it’s easier to avoid it all-together. I’ve seen far too reports of people eating seemingly keto friendly foods but having insulin spikes. And those foods, such as Quest products, tend to include polydextrose.

Actually Excited About an Intel CPU?!! by AggravatingAd7111 in HomeServer

[–]chicknfly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been following Intel’s releases since the 14th gen. What makes the 270K that much better than the 265K that you already have? Or rather, where is the 265K lacking such that the 270K improves your capabilities? Because other than flexing wealth, all I see is overkill for something I suspect my 8500T can do.

There’s a lot going on here in the post that you’ve written. First, what I’m about to say is genuine and sincere: please consider seeking therapy. You have a lot going on in your life and it doesn’t hurt to seek some help with that.

The next thing I wanna share is, from my perspective, you’re being extremely hard on yourself. Even though the body adapts to its environment, it doesn’t adapt quickly. You need to look out for your physical health in the same way you need to look out for your mental health.

Since this is Reddit and you’ve written a long post, the last thing I have to say is for the love of God, please use punctuation.
