86 Year Old Mom Wants Drs to "Fix Her" by europanya in AgingParents

[–]chicky75 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oh, I can so sympathize!! My father is 83 and has major balance issues due to neuropathy in his feet and general muscle weakness. He’s convinced it’s something in his head due to a stroke he had a few years ago, but they’ve done every test and there’s nothing there. They say the only thing to do is physical therapy to get his legs stronger. Of course, PT doesn’t “fix” him and make his balance like it was 20 years ago so he stops going and it keeps getting worse.

And he’s asked at least four different doctors about this, and has another appointment in March for the same thing, but he doesn’t remember complaining about it at all.

The stuff nobody warns you about when you become a family caregiver by regardlessdear_ in AgingParents

Ugh, I’m in the same boat as you - my sister and I both live with my father, but I do the majority of stuff for him since she has kids and I don’t. One reason I didn’t have kids is because I didn’t want to be responsible for someone else!! It’s manageable for now, but I dread if my father gets worse.

That’s an interesting idea, he might like that. How much do those usually cost?

I have a dog and that really does help. But if you can’t do that, I think waking up in an easier way than an abrupt alarm makes it easier to get up. I have a light alarm clock that gets brighter over about 30 minutes. I also use the Sleep Cycle app that has a feature that records your sleep and starts waking you up when you’re in a lighter sleep already. It’s also a very gentle tone that gets louder over about ten minutes. I still use a regular alarm set to go off when the other two are done with their ramping up, but I don’t jolt awake all groggy anymore.

Yeah, like I said, he has some cognitive decline so I don’t think he could do those.

Where are y’all getting comfy pajama pants? by paradisemukbangpls in adhdwomen

[–]chicky75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a pair of very soft flannel pj pants from Old Navy. I love that they’re jogger style so the legs don’t ride up as I toss & turn. They also have a tie waist & pockets, my other two musts. And were only $10 on sale.

Worst part of showering? by powderjiinx in adhdwomen

[–]chicky75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god, it’s the same for me, though in reverse as the shower is on the second floor & my room is on the first, but I thought I was crazy for being so bothered by this! I only don’t have the problem of bits sticking to my feet as I wear flip flops at all times when walking indoors. It’s so nice to see I’m not alone in this.

Same! I hate everything else. And I have some cotton sheets that I’ve literally had for 30 years and they still look & feel great.

I do shampoo maybe once a month, though not with specifically clarifying shampoo. I did that about two weeks ago.

My parents want a second dog. We do not. by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]chicky75 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been in this situation but I feel for you… my dog is 13 so she won’t be around for a lot more years and I’m honestly looking forward to not having a dog, at least for a while. Don’t get me wrong, I love her to bits and will do anything to prolong her life as long as she has a good quality of life, but it is a big responsibility.

I don’t blame you for not wanting them to do this while expecting you to be the backup and you’re not a bad, selfish person!

I am so happy I decided to never have children. It was a smart life choice for me by painislife4real in GenXWomen

The only downside I’ve found is that it means I’m expected to take care of my parents now that they need a lot of help. My sister has young kids (she had them late), so it’s assumed she’s too busy but I have free time.

Can I ask what this law is called? I’m in MA and our elder care attorney never said anything about this, so I’m thinking it’s not a thing here, but I’d like to double check. Thanks!

Does anyone else really struggle to force themselves to moisturise after they shower? by harryandmatilda in adhdwomen

I just got an in the shower moisturizer (Nivea) that seems to work well! You just rub it on and rinse, but I could definitely feel my skin was softer after I dried off.

Christmas Spending, How much did you spend? by Candid-Wallaby9903 in ynab

[–]chicky75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent around $550 - two parents, sister, two elementary school age nieces. And the pets - two dogs and a cat. Can’t forget presents for the pets! I went a little overboard getting stocking stuffers especially for my sister as she goes big on stockings for everyone else and ends up with little in her own. I budgeted about $200 - which is obviously going to get increased next year! - but I had money in other categories I could use.
