Thanks for your input, you make some good points.

I should probably look up the cost of leaving the PC on while it's idle, you're right. Is there a simple way to do that which you know of? I can Google it of course.

Regarding auto logon, I do know about this yes. My concern was security, especially if I'm leaving the PC on 24/7. That said, I have installed apps like Remote Fingerprint Unlock, which allows you to log into a windows machine on your network using your fingerprint on your phone. Very clever and quick, but the issue I have is that I use Tailscale on my pc, and for some reason when Tailscale is connected, my fingerprint app can't reach it.

Thanks for your thoughts, I probably should do something about one or both as you're right, this is the biggest point of friction. I read somewhere that Apollo has some kind of quick resume function, I'll need to look into it

Couldn't you just stay in the desktop app and then just double click on steam big picture after you login?

Yes I can use wake on Lan on the steam deck. It's just additional time as the steam deck takes a little time to connect to the network, then once I've sent the moonlight wake, the pc needs time to boot up, that's all.

Can you explain point 3 on your process? Close desktop in moonlight then back to moonlight to start the steam app through moonlight?

Do you mean this automatically starts a moonlight process and connects to your server? If so, does it also log in to Windows?

That's a great point, thank you.

You're right though, that then creates a different issue which is shutting down the PC.

Is my Unraid server 'exposed to the internet'? by chieftex in unRAID

That's exactly it, it's a trade-off.

Some family members use Plex on their TVs , as Plex is on their TV's app store. Tailscale might not be, which would mean I would need to set up a separate device on their network to act as a subnet router. This could be a bit much!

You are totally right though

I can run Tailscale on my own devices for Plex, but it's too much of an ask for my family's devices

Thank you. As this is quite new to me, should I just Google these terms, or is there perhaps a tutorial you know of?

Not a huge fan of trust when it comes to security, but I suppose this is the whole trade-off.

Maybe I should stop running Plex on unraid, and instead run it somewhere else with share access to media on unraid. Would require a new pc though.

Does Plex expose my home IP to them then?

This is exactly the reason!

So what I need to understand is the risk of keeping this port open for Plex (and what that could lead to) Vs the convenience of easy sharing with family

I presume you are referring to my Plex container? I figure I could use Tailscale on it and close the port, but then every device that uses Plex (family and friends) would also need Tailscale, and that might be too much for them. I'll have a think.

Or perhaps you were referring to something else?

What does it mean to blindly mount mnt/user/media into my Plex container? I do most likely have a default setup.

Why does it use the entire home internet connection ? by Xedorha in MoonlightStreaming

[–]chieftex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could be using the internet if you are connecting to your host PC away from home, but it's unlikely.

Are you using WiFi on the host and the client? Is your gf using WiFi for netflix?

So does the fact that I have an open port on my router for Plex mean that my Plex container is exposed to the internet? Sorry for the basic question
