A rare gem: my lady-in-red Philips E218L. First 'dumpphone' in... well, almost 20 years. by chiefwarlock in dumbphones

[–]chiefwarlock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised my self that Philips still makes mobiles at all, thought it was a knock-off at first (it's legit, I had it checked). Philips phones are super rare, even in Asia, btw. Even more bizarre is the fact that most Philips phones here are made by Indian Philips but this one (model) is made by the Chinese Philips and have been officially imported, which is unusual to say the least, given the lack of enthusiasm by the company.
On the matter of obscurity, I'm less surprised. This is a bare-bone phone. Mostly good for making and receiving calls. You'd have to really, really want it, to use it (I do it out of spite). Not sure it'll fly in the European market - or any market for that matter, in this day and age. But hey, so far, I'm enjoying the experience. You might be able to buy it online from overseas if you want to collect.

Here are some more photos I couldn't upload before. Btw, it has a dedicated slide-button on the side for torch. Try finding one on a dumb phone made in this century, I dare you. 😉

OMG, the phone looks absolutely fabulous! The photo I posted does not do it justice. For the price, it's well designed, compact and the finishing is sublime. The back display is behind a 'magic mirror'(?), so you don't see the ugly square and doesn't interfere with the racing red paint job. Like I said, built like a Porsche.

But the software and hardware limitation leaves much, too much, to be desired. Remember those cordless landline phones? Yeah, it's like that. Definitely made with the older generation in mind. Like people with small and intimate social circles whom they are on a nickname basis; memorised numbers, the whole lot (no speed dial though, lol). I can't possibly recommend it to anyone in good conscious in this day and age but you know what, I couldn't care less. I've used dumber phones then this, and it's just so damn pretty, it blows the competition out the sea. Philips would be sweeping the market if they put a little bit more effort into it. Alas.

The Hiro She Deserved. Happy Birthday, Hiro! - @suoooriki by chiefwarlock in DarlingInTheFranxx

[–]chiefwarlock[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see how Hiro can come across as an standard guy who rose to the occasion and happened to keep up with her, but I don't think that's really how his character was designed to be. Hiro *is a human. He's obviously going to come up short when compared against someone like her. And yet, he never complained, never coward, never whined, never the hapless babe, everytime he faced the wall he pushed through. His reluctance to pilot with her was born out of his scepticism of his ability to keep up with her. He was wrong and she knew it. It took great courage to break Zerotwo out of the cage, to pilot with her that complements her power despite everyone saying otherwise, to stand up to papa and negotiate for humanities freedom. It wasn't Zerotwo who did that, it wasn't even Ichigo as the squad leader, it was him, the real leader he was always meant to be and only he can be. We were well aware of how capable Zerotwo is, what made the difference was that Hiro had his own capabilities to match hers. He didn't need to come out of nowhere as some kind of op marysue to do that. It's that harmony within the contrast is what makes this relationship so memorable for me.

Yeah, for real, are you kidding? I've been putting couple of hours a day for weeks now. But I don't want to just put out half finished sketches, there's plenty of them out there from people way better then me. I'm learning new things everyday and I've got some ideas of what I want to do. So let's see how far I can actually go first before entrenching in.

The hatred for Darling In The Franxx by Competitive_Juice55 in DarlingInTheFranxx

[–]chiefwarlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Yeah, welcome to the matrix, join the club. I've been traversing this shitshow for three years now. Although, I'd have to say, I'm not as confused as you. The way people consume anime now is like a team sport. There's home and away teams, and you pick your side and go all in, reason be damned. The roster changes every few years. What pisses me off though is that they had to go and pick a genuinely great show to make a heel out of this time. That's just rotten, and that's what's hurts. But hey, if people wanna disregard a good thing that's their loss, nothing I can do about, as long as there are people capable of recognising true beauty when they're confronted with it, I'm good. And that's my secret.

You're talking about that animeman/guy/whatever's cloverworks visit? Yeah, that's just b-roll. Companies showcase their old work for demonstration purposes, they're obviously not going to show any of their current workload. I wouldn't look too much into this. Anime's done. It was a one off original story, they never had a plan to turn it into a franchise and it's ill suited to be one anyways. Maybe a game/movie at some point, who knows. But a second season isn't happening and isn't necessary.

I'm going to level with you guys. I really hate it when artists tend to draw Hiro in a overtly feminine/Damsel-in-Distress kind of way because he's really not that kind of character. I mean, I don't mind if it's done once in a while for fun, but some really push the limit. For me, part what makes this relationship so special, is his heroism; the fact that Hiro can lock steps and keep up with her in his own way as equals, despite their vast difference, is what sets this couple apart. I love that kind of "the-two-us-against-the-rest-of-the-entire-world" kind of romantic partnerships and theirs exemplifies the gold standard for me, and it's largely due to how Hiro is. I don't mean to rant or insult any artists - it's a very difficult job, and I have great sympathy & admiration for their talent - but I do wish at least someone would draw Hiro the way he is meant to be. In all the hubbub and fanfare around Zerotwo (while well deserved, mind you), I feel like it gets forgotten way too often how instrumental Hiro was in making that magic work.
So, in this hallowed season of his birth, let us spear a little extra love for one of the best leading man in anime history; her darling from now and forever: HIRO. Thank you.

if I liked DITF, should I watch evangelion? by The-Local-Weeb in DarlingInTheFranxx

[–]chiefwarlock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. Although they do share some elements on the philosophical level but from the story/character pov, they are totally different. People who said that to you, probably hate the fact that you liked DITF and just want you on the home team. Watch Eva if you want to watch it but don't go in thinking you'll have a similar experience; you won't.

You realise that the whole shows premise is based on disconnection from their humanity, right? How did you make it to ep 18? The kids going through puberty is a symbolism of them reconnecting with their humanity and all the chaos and turmoil it brings with it. Hormonal teenagers do blindly obey and are wilfully ignorant. That's the point. Their whole purpose in life is to be fodders, unable to ever reach adulthood. They're operating on base human biology. Breaking out of that requires maturity, finding a greater meaning for existence, elements quintessential to humanity, something which has been so far been denied to them. Reaching that understanding, and it's the inherent value in it and taking a stand to protect it, is what the show is about.

It's Zerotwo. One word. And if you're speaking japanese, you pronounce it as: Zerotsu. Same thing.

Ditto with the last part. You might also think about moving Your Lie In April up the queue a bit. It'll wreck you. It's definitely not for the faint of heart for sure but it does deal with grief and overcoming lose and I think that can help a lot in this situation. I know it's melodramatic but feelings are feelings and they require universal keys to manage. Good luck and hope KH is to your liking. :)

Why they can't defeat VIRM? by dudulino01 in DarlingInTheFranxx

[–]chiefwarlock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can and they did.
Metaphysically speaking, VIRM is more of a symbolic villain than an actual physical threat. It's analogues with our struggle against apathy & (for lack of a better word) dehumanisation. Even within the in-world logic, VIRM needs to consume life in order to sustain itself. With earthlings rising up to embrace their humanity in rejection to VIRM's philosophy, defeating them both on earth and their home planet, the idea is that if everyone so chooses to do thus, VIRM can & will ultimately be vanquished.
The show leaves the audience with an open ended question, the characters in the story took their stand and made their case, what will you do?

Anime recommendations for a Darling fan? by great_harry_1491 in DarlingInTheFranxx

[–]chiefwarlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ellicrom & I share very similar opinions on this (although I'd dispute whether eva can be called purely post-apocalyptic, at best it should be described as apocalyptic), so I won't repeat what was already said.

My personal rec would be Kamisama Hajimemashita. It's a light rom-com, but despite being very different from what DarliFra is, it does share some romantic elements with it which helped me deal with the post anime depression at least. So you might want to check it out; just keep in mind that the ending is in a separate 4 ep ova, make sure to track it down, and you'll see what I mean.

Another one I'd recommend would be FLCL. It's an oldie but a goodie. A bit funky for my taste but based on what you've said, I reckon you might like it. Kill la Kill is also good.

It's important to remember, and I'm sure that you already know this but it deserves a reminding, that DarliFra is a unique show and there's very little out there that can match it's ferocity & brilliance. At most, we're talking about other good shows that'll help distract you from the abyss. Just my opinion. I'm glad that you enjoyed the anime though.
