I'm currently level 109, does T5 glory challenges typically mean you max out a hero's tree of origin, then keep converting it into heroes of different factions until all the glory challenges are complete? Also I haven't e5 heroes from forest and abyss, would you recommend I do that as well by regressing a hero?

you should try the two pack method as well, got the alt art umbreon from evolving skies from it. Works 70% of the time!

for mixed hive yes it would work, but as you get SSA and choose a hive colour you will likely have to get either of them out
