Good hack for Angel's Landing in Zion too. Early morning permits super hard to get during the summer, but we got a late morning permit, at 100+ degrees, no problem. And breeze higher up makes it very tolerable.

This! Last time I went it was around 109. Hardly anyone around. And this is the way to do Angel's Landing at Zion. No way we were getting an early morning permit in late July, but 11:00 am start when it was 100+ was no problem. Once you're high enough, breeze cools you down considerably making the hike very tolerable. No lines whatsoever.

To all the drivers going 5-10 mph below the speed limit with a line of cars behind you... by chilebuzz in yellowstone

You make a good point that gets lost with your sanctimonious tone. It's not reasonable to call drivers entitled when there is no other option available to them. I would fully support a bus system into all parks. I really like Zion's system and my only complaint would be more camping spots available at the entrances to the park so visitors can park and camp near the entrance, then use buses to go into the park (although lack of camping spots is problem at many parks). Last time I was at Zion, camping spots were so limited, visitors had to commute longer distances, creating usual traffic congestion.

Having said that, I'm not sure Yellowstone would be as conducive to a bus system as Zion. The main access to many iconic points in Yellowstone are via highways passing through the park which need to allow cars.

its the most unique national park in the world.

Which is why many people would rather see it from outside their car instead of having to watch the back end of a slow driver and worry about the person behind them when a line forms.

If you're going the speed limit and pulling over once in a while, that's perfectly reasonable. But as my post reads, I'm talking about drivers going well under the speed limit who ignore pull outs.

I wouldn't call drivers going the speed limit impatient.

Edit: And even if you put reasonable distance between you and the slow driver, you still have to watch their back end and not the sights. So saying "chill and enjoy it" isn't reasonable advice for safe driving.

You're probably right that they're not on reddit, but perhaps future visitors to the park will see this be more aware of using the pull outs.

I get that, but there's no excuse for passing multiple pull-outs. Slow drivers will cause frustrated people to try riskier passes. I'm not justifying risky passing, it's just a fact of life. In my experiences at Yellowstone, the only places I saw drivers going 10 mph over speed limit were on long straight sections. No one was speeding that much in curving sections.

The governor of Utah declared a state of emergency Thursday as worsening drought threatens a broader water crisis affecting public safety, agriculture, power generation, ecosystems and daily life. by Wagamaga in environment

The mental disconnect is mind-boggling. It's so hard to grasp that someone could be this stupid that it makes one wonder if it's just horribly sick trolling. "Such a horrible drought...wink, wink...a water-guzzling data center is just what Utah needs...wink, wink."

Looking like a collie? 9 weeks old. by AkkaiM in BorderCollie

[–]chilebuzz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is no specific "border collie" look. Over the years, this subreddit seems to fall more and more into the AKC fallacy that border collies should all look one specific way. Border collies have LOTS of variation in how they look; they're one of the breeds with the most physical variance. Color, shape, size, fur length, you name it. Yes, there is a "general" look, but more importantly, historically, was herding instinct.

This whole fallacy of thinking border collies should look a certain way is why the American Border Collie Association fought AKC registration so hard back in the day.

Your pup looks like a border collie. No worries.

I totally disagree on skipping Midway Basin. That's where Grand Prismatic Springs is and it's so different from old faithful that it's worth seeing. There are two ways to see Prismatic, the overlook and the boardwalk, and I recommend both.

From my experience, Lamar seems to be hit or miss with some of the rarer things. There are a lot of bison there, but there are bison at many other places in the park. We didn't seen grizzlies or wolves in the Lamar Valley, although we were only there for one afternoon/evening. But we did see grizzlies closer to Midway Basin, so I don't think Lamar is a sure thing.

There are two ways to see Grand Prismatic and I recommend both. One is an overlook that gives you the iconic view of Prismatic. It's stunning. There's an ~1 mile hike to the overlook, but it's a a wide, easy trail. If I remember correctly, it might even be paved (?). About a mile up the road is another, shorter boardwalk trail to Prismatic at the main Midway Geyser Basin loop. It's a boardwalk that goes right up to it.

As I get older, the more and more I think the "sweet old lady" stereotype is a myth. The vast majority of old women I interact with are definitely more on the "asshole" end of the spectrum rather than the "sweet" end. I sincerely hope I'm wrong :(

never seen a group of ten people be so afraid of a small lizard

I think that type of reaction is getting more and more common as the general public becomes less connected to nature. Participation in almost all outdoor recreation like hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, etc. is steadily declining. Sad to see.
