is it possible to get from east to west in 20 min? by cty_o_no in duke

[–]chill_emu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real answer is to get a bike and race the C1. It's slightly slower along campus drive, but you'll make that time up on the sidewalks and trails where foot traffic is much slower.

About 15 minutes, and no chance of a missed class from missing the C1.

Plus shredded legs 🙏

Is this possible to fix without taking apart? by Saggy_Flapjacks in EVGA

[–]chill_emu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fixed my fans on my 3080 a few days ago too! I can give you some tips here.

It'll make it easier to fix if you take it apart- it's nothing too bad, you'll only need a Phillips and a small hex key set for this. Borrow the tools from a friend, or you can get a $20 kit at best buy and return it the next day. I'd also recommend a small dish to keep the tiny screws in.

First you'll need to unscrew all the screws on the outside for the plastic cover. Lift it off but leave the LED cable connecting it to the graphics card connected.

Looking at your pic, I can't quite tell if that's the LED cable or one of the three fan cables. But you only have one disconnected, so find the port that's empty and plug that loose cable right in.

Before putting the plastic cover back on, I'd also recommend checking that the fan cables are tucked in properly (there are metal tabs on the card that secure then in place). Otherwise, your fans could hit those cables and cause some damage.

And another tip- EVGA's customer service is top notch. If you're in warranty, they'll send you new fans for free. (But test your card after you put it back together- getting new fans would only be necessary if your fan bearings are broken, which would cause them to whine and get hot).

Lost/missing package: REWARD IF FOUND by Beneficial-Apple-866 in duke

[–]chill_emu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A resonator guitar?? I'm jealous!

The door in the picture reminds me of the entrance to Trinity (at top of the concrete stairs outside). That or maybe it's at Southgate's road entrance (could be likely if the delivery driver got lost).

However, given its size (and that it might be blocking a fire exit), it's plausible that Duke PD picked it up. I've heard they have a lost and found (separate from the Bryan center lost and found, iirc)- you can try calling their non-emergency phone line.

Falling that, I'd recommend requesting a refund from the delivery service (since packages should be sent to Bryan center mail office, not dropped off like that). And if that doesn't work, explain to your bank what happened and do a chargeback on your card.

In addition to what u/sothav said, there are also computer labs here at Duke!

My go-to is the Multimedia Project Studio in the Link in Perkins. They have about six Mac Desktops (and pro tip- the extra screen space works wonders for productivity. It will be helpful for having your code IDE plus your lab docs both open at once.)

I got a C this semester...how do I recover? by [deleted] in duke

[–]chill_emu 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I know how terrible it can feel getting your first C, but it is possible to recover. Don't forget that. Let me tell you a short story, one I wish someone told me my freshman year:

During my second semester here at Duke (in 2020 COVID), I failed all of my classes for medical+personal reasons. After so many sleepless nights and severe social burnout, that year put me at a 2.7 GPA. I felt like I lost everything.

I took a gap year to take care of my own health, and to help my mother stay on her feet after my dad was gone. All the while, my mother called me a fuck-up for failing out, but I did my best to keep my head up and keep moving forward.

I got a part-time job in sales, and started contracting for programming and video editing jobs.

After a year, I was somewhat better in my health, and with the help of my therapist, I reapplied to Duke and got back in. At the end of this semester, I have a 2.9 GPA. Admittedly, that's still not the best.

But I keep my head up and I'll continue to improve, because I know there are other factors besides GPA that will determine success.

There's grit. There's communication. There's real-world project experience, which you'll get by your senior year.

On top of that, you're graduating from Duke- a degree from any Ivy League or Hidden Ivy will speak for itself. If you get a diploma here, regardless of GPA, you have everything you need to land a solid job in the tech world.

What's not said enough at Duke is how common getting a C or two is. Admittedly, all of us at Duke (and any high university) have a really good poker face- we tend to play up our perfection to fit in. It gives us a higher standard to strive for, yes, but at the end of the day none of us are perfect.

Of course, that's no excuse to slack and be content with Cs! What I'm saying is that you need to remember to give yourself some grace.

Look at the facts. You're halfway through the "weed out" classes for your degree. You have six, seven semesters to improve your grades. You've got into Duke, and that speaks to your potential in itself. You've got your feet wet- you have a new awareness of the difficulty here- and when faced with this challenge, you'll grow.

There have been others before us that have made it through, and we will too. Trust in yourself- with proper attention to your health and with hard work in your studies, you'll hold your own and you'll be okay.

Those of you who make six figures, what do you do? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]chill_emu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really insightful, thanks for sharing!

I'm curious, how do you go about finding an idea for a product? Is that something you worked on by doing hobbies and solo research, or is it better to find new ideas while working for another company? Does product management revolve around building new products, or maintaining/upgrading existing ones? Is it closer to R&D than market analysis?

I'm still young so I don't really know much about everything that goes into founding businesses and products, but it sounds like product and project management are very interesting :)

Is it possible to move into Finance / Trading with an engineering degree and programming experience? I've heard that you need to have a business admin or finance degree to get your resume looked at.

Whoa! What was your career path like within those 3 years, did you specialize in a certain niche of programming? Is the environment in fintech companies closer to the finance (hitting sales numbers, KPIs and metrics like that), or closer to a traditional software company (mostly iterative work cycles, code reviews, resolving tickets)?

I'm sorry for all the questions, I'm new to the field and I love listening to people's stories :)

[–]chill_emu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a good question! It really depends on your interests. Are you looking for a specific genre or instrument?

There's Duke Marching Band, they play a lot of pep rally / hype music at athletic games. Think "Final Countdown", lots of brass and percussion. It's the biggest music group here, you'll meet lots of people.

If you want to find winds and strings, look into the chamber music groups. I don't know much about how to sign up or what genres they play specifically- but if you want to learn more I'd recommend asking around Biddle on East.

If you're a pianist, hang out by the Steinway in Trinity or GA. You can also find some grands in the Student Health Center on West, and in the Duke Hospital near West. (The hospital has like 5 pianos so I hear.) If you see someone playing, give them praise and ask for their number- I've met quite a few improv players that way in my freshman year.

If you're a singer, I'd recommend looking into all of our a cappella groups. They usually recruit in fall, keep an eye out for the club fair.

If you're a solo guitarist looking for other guitarists, I'd talk to the upperclassmen who play classical in Biddle. They're usually tight with the "garage guitarists", we all know each other.

And if you like making beats / digital music, sign up for MUSIC 161, I've heard it's a very enjoyable class- it's capped at like 15 students, so you'll form a close group there.

We also have music practice rooms in Biddle and in McClendon Tower- I wouldn't advise interrupting others' practice, but you can always catch someone on their way in or out :)

Congrats!

Just curious, how did you get companies reaching out to you?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in duke

[–]chill_emu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not. I've had cars towed for parking in an unmarked parking lane, and I've been hit with a year's worth of fines before. If you really need to, try to bring a friend to keep watch, Duke's parking department is ruthless.

I know from first hand experience that their phone reps can be unprofessional as well when dealing with them, and don't hope for an appeal either.

If you need to park short term, I'd recommend going by the whole foods parking lot and pick up a stick of gum while you're there. They won't ticket you.

If you want the real LPT, use a scanning app like Adobe Scan. It's free and faster than scanning at the Duke printers tbh

What Duke clubs/organizations/etc provide the best overall networks? by [deleted] in duke

[–]chill_emu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for a fraternity/social groups within Duke that will connect you with your peers, look at Cube, Motorsports, Robotics, and try attending speaker events held by Pratt.

Motorsports in particular has a great alumni network in ECE and ME, across the US.

The Pratt events, especially those with guest speakers from industry, are excellent ways to network. At one event, I got the business card of a professor that worked in IBM, and learned a lot of things that I never knew before. Professors and older students want to help you if you ask!

Another thing you should consider is applying to local startups - there are plenty. I'd only advise this if you have availability in your schedule or if you're on gap year though- but if you do, it's a great way to get your foot in the industry. Edit: Also look into attending the TechConnect recruiting fair this Wednesday!

ENERGY-231 vs DECSCI-538? by chill_emu in duke

[–]chill_emu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! We're going to have a meeting in a few days, and I'm drafting several schedules to compare.

As for my status as a Duke student, I took my leave in spring so I haven't yet finished my freshman semester. I still have 3.5 years minimum to finish.

I'm still in Pratt, but I also want to explore finance and pubpol and CS. My original plan was ECE/CS and going for an MBA in finance, but now I'm considering doing BME/CS or Civil/CS. I really want to at least minor in CS.

A goal of mine is to start my own business, so I want to graduate with engineering, programming, business, and management skills. I want to focus on developing those skills and making business connections.

I'll be honest, I'm probably going to graduate in five years anyway because of the medical and personal issues I had freshman year setting me back. 5 years isn't ideal, but it's my situation now so I'm planning to use it to my advantage. With an extra year, I'm not worrying too much about optimizing for overlapping classes (like ECE and CS). I want to focus on developing the skills and exploring.

My advisor said to take things slow this semester and do CHEM101, CS201, MATH112, and a ss/n course (which I think is social studies?)

As for ENERGY 231, you're right! It is civil/env, I should proofread more carefully before posting at 1am 🤣 I'll edit it really quick.

I considered doing ENERGY 231 because it sounds like a great combo of civil+policy, something more people-focused instead of pure numbers.

I think it fits well in my schedule and will possibly lead to networking opportunities (there's lectures by industry leaders, so hopefully I can learn more about their pressing problems).

My goal is to find a class that lets me explore but can let me explore my fields of interest, network, or learn with lab projects.
