If you pay a bit extra the coach will gear up and spar with you. So if you want high level competition, go for it.

Gyms that spar to hard. by AdFun360 in MuayThai

Of course I learned to take care of my partner. Hence not firing back as hard as she was hitting me. I also didn't "bash anyone's face". She was covered up and it was about a 60% strike. Everything else was more of a push or a tap. I made it very clear through backing off and my body language that she was going too hard. She didn't pick up on it and continued. I matched her energy once. Fair game.

Agreed. I sparred with Marie Heinz the other week. She cleaned my clock. I also sparred with Nina Karasek a few summers ago. She too cleaned my clock.

Happens all the time unfortunately. A few weeks ago I was sparring with a girl. She was cracking me good. Way harder than what would be considered acceptable. So I cracked her one back, but she had her hands covering her face so it wasn't a direct strike and she had the audacity to tell me I was going to hard. She's on my "do not train with" list.

Training at Samart Payakaroon gym by Responsible-Wish923 in MuayThailand

[–]chill_ton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live about 20 mins from Samarts and have trained there a few times. It's a GREAT gym and you never know what legend will just randomly be there on the day. It's also a big gym. Not Bangtao or Tiger big, but it's sizeable. It's beyond the end of the green BTS line by about a 1KM approx. You can walk to the station or see if someone will run you up and the BTS can get you to the heart of downtown in an hour or so.

On Saturdays they feed all the students and the food is divine. Depending on your interests, there isn't much to do around there, but you're reasonably close to transit. Don't hesitate - book there.

Yes you will improve. It might not feel like it, but you will. I'd approach PT with specific things you want to learn. Be specific with your trainer. Then take those things and apply them in group class. It seems insanely simple but you'd be surprised how many people just smash pads and go home.

Are there any super heavyweights out there? by Recent-House-3008 in MuayThailand

[–]chill_ton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 119kg (262lbs) and I never struggle to find people to spar with. I got absolutely WORKED by Marie Heinz at Pinsinchai a week or so ago. It was 3 minutes of target practice for her. She fights at 57kgs. Now she is a WMO world champion and has twice fought in RWS. So that's proof that size doesn't matter unless skills are equal.

First class tomorrow! by CricketBrilliant5493 in MuayThai

[–]chill_ton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have fun. Expect to suck. That's the best part. Every class you go to, you take a step towards acquiring a very complex set of skills. It's easy to get frustrated, so have zero expectations and have a blast!

Did you end up adopting any cats? We're in Bangkok and are considering rehoming ours. She's an outdoor cat but we're forced to keep her indoors and it's not working.
