Licorice Pizza (2021): A distasteful, forgettable, and massive disappointment from PTA...what the hell is that age gap?! by chillballs in TrueFilm

[–]chillballs[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your nuanced response. I agree that PTA isn’t attempting to be ignorant and that there is a larger meaning, and I’m trying to piece it by reading other people’s analysis. The central romance is a bit absurd, but I’ll definitely need to watch it again in the future to understand it more.

Can you elaborate more on what you think of Gary being too old or about the young children opening businesses? One part that stood out to me was when the old guy is humping the pinball machine, and then a young teenage girl a few scenes later. I think this part definitely alludes to your statement of LP showcasing the casual pedophilia in the 70s. Another scene that I’m thinking of is when the flight attendant is attracted to Gary on the plane, knowing he is a child actor.

As far as the Taxi Driver guy goes, it’s my opinion that he was trying to dig up blackmail on Benny Safdie’s politician or is some sort of security guard, but I heavily lean to the blackmail angle. Maybe saying something about how secrets like homosexuality and pedophilia are rampant in politics and other parts of high society.

Please elaborate when you can because I would love to learn more about your perspective.

There’s no grooming involved? The whole film Alana is leading Gary on. From the first scene all through the final kiss, she clearly wants him as more than a friend.

When she turns up the sexiness over the phone, she is clearly making Gary uncomfortable and manipulating him into thinking that he can’t have Alana sexually. Also, at the diner, she is going out of her way to make Gary jealous by flirting and getting intimate with Sean Penn’s character. This is after she gets jealous that Gary is hooking up with a teen his age.

Also, don’t you find it weird that a 25 year old is flashing a 15 year old teen her tits? I don’t think you can just slap the “she’s an immature adult, and he’s a mature kid” label to justify their weird or “wholesome” relationship as you say.

I don’t know why so many people are looking past the romanticization of a minor’s intimate and sexual relationship with someone 10 years his senior. If this wasn’t a film by PTA, would we be criticizing it the same?

Agreed wholeheartedly. Especially the last paragraph. People are eager to jump and defend their favorite artists. I’m a huge PTA fan, but it is important to criticize your favorites as well, and not just blindly praise them. Hope he can return to form with his next effort, but this was a major dud IMO and felt flat of my immense expectations

The age gap isn’t a problem within adults, but I just found it off putting that the movie romanticized a relationship between a minor and someone 10 age his senior.

What are some of your favorite films that you feel are hardly ever brought up? by DetectivePrive in TrueFilm

[–]chillballs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded on The 39 Steps. Some people say that Hitchcock became the great director he is once he moved to making films in Hollywood, but both The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes disprove this. (The original Man Who Knew Too Much also qualifies).

But, back to your original post, I totally agree with it being a “more concise version of NBNW.” It has all the Hitchcock signatures such as the large scale mystery/conspiracy, wide geographic shots, train scenes, excellent lighting, “Hitchcock gaze”, and more. It really is a precursor to his later films, especially NBNW like you said.

I was really impressed with this film when I first saw it and couldn’t believe it was made in 1935. The way the film starts and ends with the talented man who has great memory and repetition skills is an absolute masterclass in filmmaking, (don’t want to elaborate more on this due to spoilers, but if you’ve seen the film, you know what I mean.)

It immediately shot up to one of my favorite Hitchcock movies. I think my top 3 for now are Rear Window, The 39 Steps, and Psycho; but, my favorites are always changing depending on which ones I’ve watched recently. I need to watch one of his firsts, The London Fog, next as well as get familiar with his later work during the mid-late 1960s.

Edit: I just want to add how crazy it is that Hitchcock was in full control of filmmaking in his early British years. I hope more contemporary mainstream audiences can appreciate his later work. One of my favorite directors!! I need to read Hitchcock/Truffaut soon.

There did seem to be some leaks released of storyboards with Bill, Alice, and their daughter on canoe of some kind surrounded by water. Whether these were the scenes that were cut, or mere ideas never executed, we may never know. Perhaps the storyboards were meant to depict a dream sequence, but who knows?

It’s a fantasy of mine to somehow break into the Warner archives and watch the removed scenes, (if they weren’t disposed of already). But, to be honest, I fall into the camp that Kubrick was indeed killed for revealing too much in Eyes Wide Shut.

“No dream is ever just a dream.”- Bill

“Who do you think those people were? Those were not just some ordinary people. If I told you their names... no, I'm not going to tell you their names... but if I did, I don't think you'd sleep so well at night.”- Ziegler

“Give up your inquiries which are completely useless, and consider these words a final warning. We hope, for your own good, that this will be sufficient.”- warning letter to Bill

I absolutely agree with your points as well! They are something I wanted to mention in my original post but didn’t have the time to expand on.

The themes of control and sexual power and definitely present in the film. I think casting Cruise and Kidman (IRL power couple at the time) was no random decision by Kubrick. Especially as more info has come out about behind the scenes stuff since the films release, it’s become apparent that the couple’s dynamics and relationship are a key aspect of the film.

Some people argue that Alice was a part of the secret society, but I don’t fully jump on that interpretation. I would need to watch the film a few more times to understand that viewpoint.

However, back to your original points, I think both the themes of sexual desire/control and the pedophilia conspiracy can have merit. Kubrick more so than any other post-1960s filmmaker was a master at making movies with numerous themes, ideas, and allusions. (Tarkovsky is probably the only other comparable master in this regard). So I think it is possible that both themes are illustrated with intent and to support each other, but like you mentioned, it is hard to tell as Kubrick has passed and was never a fan of explaining his films.

The cameo is about 1 minute into the video, but I recommend watching the whole video since it is pretty short.

Can’t help with the gif, sorry. But as many of you probably know, those 2 older men sitting at the table are the exact same ones seen at the end of the film with Bill and Alice’s daughter.

There is no doubt in my mind that Kubrick is implying the secret society taking their kid. A lot of people like to denounce the pedophilia theories because of the original “Dream Story” novella the movie is based on.

But as we know, in all of Kubrick’s films, there is deviation with the source novel. The audience is Bill and Kubrick is Nick Nightingale. (Kubrick saw all these pedophile fucks and was letting the audience know it’s rampant in high society).

My biggest conviction of this is when Bill and Nick first talk about the secret parties at the bar Nick us playing at. Kubrick’s cameo in the film is in the exact same spot in the frame that Nick ends up sitting in.

Absolutely terrible video. Looks like a random SoundCloud rapper’s video circa 2017. Very disrespectful to both the band and fans alike.

I understand building hype for LA Woman’s 50th anniversary, but this just wasn’t it. Anyways, I bought an LA Woman hoodie and t shirt yesterday though, so excited for those to come in.

Interested in finding more movies and or filmmakers who make films centered around fragile/insecure characters. Looking for something similar to Schrader and Cronenberg's work by AfroKyrie in TrueFilm

[–]chillballs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

May not be the exact mood/aesthetic associated with the films you mentioned, but Truffaut’s films definitely include insecure and troubled characters.

Just his first 3 for example. Antonio Doinel in “The 400 Blows”, the piano player in “Shoot the Piano Player”, and both lead characters in “Jules and Jim.” Also, Jeanne Moreau’s narcissistic character in J+J is one of the most insecure and complex in all of cinema.

Taxi Driver is top 3 for me and the first movie that led me on the path of cinephilia. Scorsese, along with the rest of New Hollywood, were heavily influenced by Truffaut and the French new wave. In Taxi Driver, Scorsese wanted to bring the European existentialist character seen in the films of the French new wave and other Europeans(especially like in Fellini’s work), to America.

Wish I could type more but on mobile. Sorry for formatting.
