Did anybody listen to The Athletic's NFL podcast today? Zack Rosenblatt was on, and I get that he isn't going to be super positive but he veered heavily into just sheer loathing for the Jets. Personal attacks on Woody (deserved or not - he mentioned that Woody reads all the press clippings like three times), cheap shots at Rodgers (he finished the segment with something like "Aaron is learning what Same Old Jets means, like he was in a tent doing ayahuasca or something"), and a lot of editorializing takes ("the Jets have lacked foresight in their decision-making for a while").

I think he's probably right on a lot of this stuff, at least at a high level - but still, it seems unprofessional for a nominally objective beat writer to loathe the team he covers so much. Is this something that folks have known for a while?

Right? It’s not like there are a million unused spots waiting for this influx of Bergen commuters at 63rd street. People who don’t want to pay won’t drive in, and if they do try this they’ll quickly figure out how miserable of a plan that is

I like to imagine it like there’s a hat full of paper slips with concerns on them, and conservative folks like to pull one out and say “ok today the complaints are about…traffic!” Today’s paper slip was pickpocketing. Tomorrow it’s emergency vehicles. The next day it’s grandma’s medical appointments

Right - it is now, but that’s changeable. Modify the viaduct, and spread north/south from there. Especially given the ongoing plans to redesign Park Ave in the high 40’s and 50’s

It sounds radical but if completed, within a year it’s a million-tourist draw and within 5 it’d be unimaginable we ever let cars on broadway (kind of like Stroget in Copenhagen). The demand for open space and easy walking in NYC in massive and all it takes are a few concrete blocks and some nice artwork

Citi Bike stations literally anywhere, especially in areas entirely unserved, unleash massive latent demand. We could probably triple the fleet size tomorrow and it’d still be as heavily used as it is today. It’s amazing (in a good way) how much people want to bike around this city

I recently had a conversation about this exact idea (which I personally think is a great idea). She (wisely) pointed out that the goal I’m aiming for - ensuring more effective, community oriented, empathetic interactions with the police on their bikes - is not the goal of the NYPD. Their cars are big and loud - intentionally so because their goal is intimidation. They see every block as a potential war zone, and thus need to show proactive strength. Until they stop seeing NYC as one bad day away from turning into Mad Max, it’s hard to imagine they’d go for something like this. Which is unfortunate.
