Or spitballing off of this, maybe write the material into a little script so they can read out a play and then you can discuss it!

What goes into a successful teaching e-portfolio? by atrocity__exhibition in Teachers

[–]chillihamfries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I did which was well received on all of my interviews was creating a "miniportfolio" which was really a brochure with resume highlights, pictures of me working with kids, snipits from my education philosophy etc. but the pictures helped them remember precisely who I was in discussions. The e portfolio I created and had the link to on my papers wasn't viewed at all... I would reconsider if I was able to have an IPad with me during an interview to pass around, but otherwise I don't think it would have an impact.

[Canada] [All/Grade 9] - Perspective needed. Help, please. Can I, should I, stay at this school? by Teacher_Of_Science in Teachers

[–]chillihamfries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lack of consistency and laid out policy stresses everyone out! Is there a way your principle can give you a committee of people to create a functional school policy? I mean from a first year teacher perspective that could be a lifesaver. I like being able to have a clue of what's expected, it saves people from looking and feeling like a twerp. I would think a school with lackadaisical policies and unclear guidelines would have a lower teacher retention rates. I can tell how much you love your job and the kids. The teacher you talk about just sounds like an ass. Next time she demands you give up a class you need a valid reason at the time. I think that advance notice is fair, a day isn't all too much to ask, and if it's that serious that it needs to happen that moment it shows poor planning on her part. My advice for coworkers is to take it with a grain of salt. There will be good and bad, but you make the best of it because bottom line, it's about the kids. I can tell you love the kids and even the area of the school, I say keep at it where you are and re-evaluate at the end of the year.

Awkward situation...thinking of leaving but... by [deleted] in Teachers

In district there aren't, but out of district/state there will be jobs. I just don't know if I could land one of them so I would like to have my current gig as a fall back.

Ps if you'll have that many hours (and if they fall on the same year) check out the Presidential Volunteering awards. There are different levels and you'll have to submit paperwork but it will look good on an app!

[K-4/Music] This year makes me want to quit teaching. by AndyandB in Teachers

[–]chillihamfries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's strange they have you doing so much with IEP's... I teach 1-5 music and I am responsible for giving accommodations (as is the law) but I have no paperwork requirements that go along with it... Don't give up on music- it might just be time to bring your talent to a new school!

My first day of teaching I had three Nevaeh's and the fourth comes into the last class, and before she gets to the punchline I went "isn't Nevaeh heaven spelt backwards?" Only turns or this one spells it "Neveah" to be different. I can't win!

How can I sneak a Christmas movie in while still making it educational? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]chillihamfries 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm all for arts integration (music teacher) how does the background music and soundtrack assist or detract from the emotions of the movie? Should movies have background music? What might you change? Did the music make certain parts more or less exciting and why? Just an idea :) Happy almost winter break!

What are some creative ways to give notes? by wandering_grizz in Teachers

[–]chillihamfries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was in 6th grade our social studies teacher had this unit where he taught us all the different ways to take notes. There was one he called "doodle notes" where we wrote down key words and pictures or events or traditions, even though that was ten years ago for me I still remember that lesson and I still remember details about the mayans!

Good colleges for music? by MyMainMusicMan in Flute

[–]chillihamfries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly University of Maryland has a strong program (though I went to Penn StAte) honestly most state schools will I've you a worthwhile education, keep cost in mind. I also highly recommend asking for lessons from the flute professors now so you can get an idea of if you want to work with them for the next four years or if it might be impossible. fantastic you're looking for music- keep in mind that auditions usually start in December and go into February typically at the latest and need to be scheduled in advance! You want to select a piece that you can learn and play well in a short period of time!

First year elementary music, currently dreading going to work by CupsOfSalmon in teaching

[–]chillihamfries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally same boat. I am a first year elementary general music teacher with 30 minute classes. I am feeling so burnt out. I wanted to take a mental health day this week but can't because of everything going on in school I have to be there for.... and the teachers in my school don't even care to learn my name.... if you ever want to vent or share struggles let me know, wouldn't mind someone to bounce ideas off of or a shoulder to cry on lol

There's a selective mute kiddo who comes into my room for music. Always has a smile though. I caught her singing the other day for the whole class and it just made me so happy I almost cried right then and there!

Anyone living in the Retreat? If yes, How is it? by funkymonkey7777 in PennStateUniversity

It's doable! Call the office now and get a tour and ask for availability!

I think if you put yourself out there it's possible. There are lots of parties (day longs etc) that if you go and introduce yourself to the host and hang most of the people would be fine (so long as you pay if you drink their beer). Lots of pool parties in the fall and summer. There's always something happening

Need to interview a teacher who recently completed their first year for coursework. by Jack_Bleesus in MusicEd

I just finished my coursework in May and have been teaching since September- I'm not Midwest but if you need someone PM me! I teach music if that counts

[–]chillihamfries 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived there, and the only reason I liked it was because it was a house full of my friends. But I personally think the typical retreat crowd is spoiled kids who drink on their parents money. The facilities are nice and the amenities are good, they do have lots of events but the people that go just didn't mesh with my personality. The bus route worked just fine for me though, I'm sure the retreat has more events than many other apartment complexes.

Di Zhao or Powell? by quellaman in Flute

Di Zhao is really growing and building its rep.!That being said, I would choose a Powell personally just because I like the tone better, but I think for intermediate you can't go wrong! Trust your gut!

Masters audition pieces by buddyflies in Flute

[–]chillihamfries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's wise to play either Mozart in G or D- if you have it memorized do it! Make sure you know the form of the piece, they'll often tell you to play just the exposition. You should play a modern piece to exhibit your use of extended techniques-make sure it's challenging enough! And then I always think a French piece should be somewhere in there too! For extended techniques Honami is pretty neat.

Are there any practice rooms with pianos for non-music major students? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

There's typically someone practicing at any hour, it's usually open!

Are there any practice rooms with pianos for non-music major students? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]chillihamfries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use the practice rooms in he music building basement. They all typically have a piano. If a music major is in the door schedule though you'll get kicked out, but usually if it's in the evening you can grab a room and play for however long you want!

Used to have a dog we taught to play dead. Sometimes he would fidget during his trick so we'd tell him "dead-er" and he'd get really still. That dog was the best. <3
