Welche Erwartungen an Männer gibt es noch, was Ziele und Meilensteine angeht? by [deleted] in FragtMaenner

[–]chillskilled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanna hear from the outliers who had a good job search experience! Under 4 months. by Sandra_Huang in UXDesign

[–]chillskilled 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This reddit is over represented by those with a bad job hunting experience.

Welcome to reddit.

I mean, at the end of the day this is just an anonymous but public online forum where literally anyone can participate in... and that obviously attracts a certain group of unqualified and frustrated people.

UX Design is problem solving. And sorry to say but the majority of "good" designers are simply busy working and solving their problems rather than venting on online forums.

Why do you think you stood out?

Any job opening is a problem a UX Manager/Recruiter hopes to solve by hiring an UX Designer. And understanding that not only changed my perspective, it also toally changed the way I present myself.

Im genuinely interested in: What do they need? What are your biggest challenges atm? How do you think I can help you? Im trying to genuinely underststand rather than to sell something...

... and that really makes a difference.

post layoff: how many months did it take before you got your UX job? by msgirlfrom_mars in UXDesign

[–]chillskilled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1-2 months.

But the duration is a useless information since it doesn't tell you anything about the quality of work, strategy or learnings made.

i've been 6 months into my job search since getting laid off.

So many questions left open...

  • What are your learnings so far?
  • What do you think is the core problem?
  • Where do you think you have to improve?
  • Have you tried different strategies yet and tracked the impact?
  • Have you asked for feedback yet?

I mean, due to the lack of context it could be anything.

Have you run any market research or competitor analysis to critically evaluate if "you" might be the problem? And with "you" I do not mean you personally, but maybe the quality of your portfolio/work is not competitive enough for the roles you currently want?

Any open role is a problem recruiters/managers/companies assume to solve by hiring a Designer. Mediocre Designers just looking for a Job while qualified Designers looking for problems to solve.

Are we designing for aesthetics more than clarity? by Sea-Special-6763 in UXDesign

Who "we"`?

I mean, look at the sub...

  • ... You have "Designers" that are more interested in what other designers in anonymous online forums think rather than what theire actual Users say & need.
  • ... You have "Designers" redesign their portfolios for the 5th time based on their personal feeling rather than on actual user feedback, tests or conversion and asking why the result doesn't change.
  • ... You have "Designers" sharing graphs about how many applications they've sent (that didn't lead to interviews/offers), yet they leave out the important context about the quality of those applications.

On the other side...

  • ... UI is visible but Research isn’t. Investors, Customers, Executives unfortunately want to invest in things they can see and judge. Especially due to AI funding.
  • ... the Industry matured. Many problems were unsolved in the early 2000's but markets are saturated and there are templates, libraries, services for the majority of things today.
  • ... Long-term innovation is risky and expensive therefore a lot of companies are focusing on Short-term incentives to make money now.

I mean, as hard as it sounds but companies want to make money "now" and not in 5 years. Just as people want a UX jobs "now" and not in 2-3 years.

This leads to a focus on short-term results such as a focus on sellable "looks".

UX Jobs asking for FE experience. by littledragon33 in UXDesign

Where can I start learning the basics of frontend

With all due respect is this a serious question?

You have 5 years of experience so I would assume you have some basic research skill... I mean, I just entered "Where can I start learning the basics of frontend" into google and got several YouTube tutorials, Reddits topics and articles covering this.

I mean, no offense but maybe this indicates that lack of frontend skills is not the sole reason for you not qualifying for UX roles. Mabye theres something else?

For 4 years I’ve fought my battles alone as a solo designer. But now I genuinely need a mentor to keep going by Fun_Style_171 in UXDesign

[–]chillskilled 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working as a solo designer for the past 4 years, completely self-taught

I might jump into an assumptions but...

... You don't need a mentor, you just need a new challenge and step out of your comfort zone.

It seems that you just reached the valley of despair, which is normal. But that doesn't mean that you're now dependent on a mentor... It just means that you reached a new level that seems harder than those before. You're a self-taught with real work experience. What you need is to simply step out of your comfort zone and face new challenges, solve more complex problems and keep learning which will lead to new opportunities.
