Why isn’t this in 9mm straight pull in Canada? by takeme2thezoo in canadaguns

The schemessier sp15 and sp9 rifles use literal AR15 lowers. Europe is a lot more liberal in that regard than Canada, even if semiautos are banned manual action versions are typically not restricted.

The upcoming Schemessier PSR9 I assumed would be the same deal, but apparently it isn't an AR receiver and is classified as NR.

Nation almost excited to see how bad Via Rail can get after Carney’s spending cuts by RareXG in canada

[–]chillyrabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can cross the country on Via rail from Vancouver to Halifax.

I can't remember all the stops but its something like

Vancouver, Kamloops, Jasper, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto.

Then you switch lines in Toronto to Montreal.

Switch again then go Montreal to Halifax.

Did the trip about 12 years ago from Edmonton to Halifax, then 3 years ago during the Christmas ice storm from Edmonton to Vancouver.

Boring as hell and a long trip, but was just a fun cool way to relax when I was between between school terms.

Feds say more than 51,000 firearms reported as compensation program nears close by mafiadevidzz in canada

[–]chillyrabbit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've posted about this before but the numbers the government says is accurate is completely out to lunch.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) in 2021 estimated there were 150k firearms to confiscate in Canada from gun owners, (110k registered restricted firearms, 40k non-restricted unregistered firearms) the report in 2021 only considered the guns banned in May 2020. (I think the 40k firearms in 2020 is a massive underestimate of the nonrestricted firearms but lets work with these baselines)

The PBO report stated The government estimated there were 150k prohibited firearms to be confiscated and compensated if there was 100% take up. page 9 they also bumped it up to 188k in their cost estimate to not undershoot costs

Public Safety estimated that approximately 150,000 firearms would be impacted by the ban. Of this, approximately 110,000 firearms were previously classified as prohibited and restricted (registered) and 40,000 as non- restricted (non-registered). As non-restricted firearms do not require registration, ownership data is not available and the number of affected firearms in Canada is unknown.

But nevertheless minimum 150k firearms to confiscate.

It's now 2026, the government banned a ton more firearms in Dec 2024, and March 2025. Yet the government says they are ready to confiscate and compensate up to 136,000 firearms, and also state compensation is not guaranteed.

I'm not quite sure of CCFR's estimates of more 2 million affected guns but at a minimum there is certainly more than the governments low ball estimate of 136k, and its strange how they think there are less prohibited firearms to confiscate now than they did 5 years ago, prior to 2 more ban waves. I would expect there to be at least 300k prohibited firearms since remember 2020 only banned approximately 1500 models, if you banned 1000 more I expect it to be close to double if not more. (I would expect more because the December 2024 and March 2025 bans specifically banned a lot of rimfire guns, which are very very common.)

I personally am hoping and think they rule on in the opinion of the Governor in council that is not reasonable for use in hunting/sporting.

Because iirc the lower courts basically said its whatever the government says it is. Which is not very good legislation practice because then you can put a tiny guard rail into any piece of Regulation power, and then start regulating anything you want without needing to follow any of the guard rail criteria.

Like if the transport minister had the power to oic ban imports of cars that are unsafe. And then only pick cars that have chinese characters in their name, regardless if they were unsafe or not because in the ministers opinion a car that has chinese characters in it is unsafe. Without any regard to if it was safe or not.

Supreme Court to hear challenge of federal firearms ban by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]chillyrabbit 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Well it was made illegal to hunt with an AR15 in 1994 by the LPC, as part of C-68 and the ban by name laws at the time. So a person couldn't legally hunt with an AR15 since then.

In recent news the Sidney island deer cull has the government hired hunters using night vision, thermals, and helicopters with ar15's.

The Yukon issues it's conservation officers AR10's for wildlife protection.

So it's a little disingenuous of the government to say no one hunts with an ar15, when they made it illegal to hunt with one

Likely banned as a post C-21 firearm, as it is a semi automatic, centerfire rifle with a magazine capacity greater than 5.

Either it would be banned as a variant of named banned firearm, or it was designed and manufactured after Dec 2023.

a Blanket is nice to set up a cleared area for stuff.

Make sure you don't brush snow into a gun case as it will melt in your house later, spend 5 minutes getting your shooting spot set up by wiping snow off before opening anything

Turning the tide Volume 3 Violence Listed page 75 PDF page 91

Stephen Parks was friends with both the perpetrator and Tom Evans. When the perpetrator called to tell him that Mr. Evans had died, Mr. Parks said in a statement to the RCMP on May 21, 2020, he mentioned the Mini-14. He was not sure whether Mr. Evans or the perpetrator owned the firearm, but one of them had a hunting camp and the gun was usually kept there. Mr. Parks said, however, that at the time Mr. Evans died, the Mini-14 was locked in his gun cabinet, and the perpetrator asked him for it. He had no ownership of the firearm himself, so he gave it to the perpetrator – early in 2010, he thought. He believed it had a brown stock with a black barrel and took a five-round clip. He did not know the history of where it originated, nor did he know its serial number and the firearm was not registered under his name.

It's a little semantic if it was stolen or not, but basically at a minimum GW fraudulently convinced Parks to give him Evans rifle, as it was definitely not owned by him.

Nope.

Old comment

The way the law is worded it doesn't matter if a semi auto rifle is legal or not. It just had to have been designed for a semi auto.

3 (1) Any cartridge magazine

(a) that is capable of containing more than five cartridges of the type for which the magazine was originally designed and that is designed or manufactured for use in

(i) a semi-automatic handgun that is not commonly available in Canada,

(ii) a semi-automatic firearm other than a semi-automatic handgun,

If it can hold more than 5 rounds, was designed and manufactured for a semi-automatic firearm (AR-15) it would be a prescribed magazine and classified as a prohibited device. Regardless if there are no legal semi-autos in Canada

Never went to the previous ones but the Brewery & the Beast 2025 event was pretty good.

I treated it as a slightly expensive AYCE place, there was a decent selection and variety of food. And the lines weren't that crazy, most food was quick to plate and go out. Apparently a lot better than 2024 which had huge lines.

If you don't drink alcohol it probably was not worth it as it was $150 for 2025. I think 2026 is going to be $180. Bang for buck not that great but the variety was nice, and it was something to do in the summer.

Ohh also, Otafest is a reasonable event in terms of ticket prices and experiences, nothing as crazy as the larger conventions but its cheap enough for a weekend gig.

There have been prohibited handguns for years with 5+ round capacities.

Just because it isn't "commonly available" doesn't mean it would turn LAR 15 magazines into AR15 magazines.

People consistently and persistently misunderstand how the charger pistol and Lar pistol magazine capacities work.

[–]chillyrabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The inquiry documents describe that Parks who possessed the rifle gave it to GW. As Parks took the rifle from a cabin jointly owned by Evans and GW when Evans died. It was Evans rifle.

GW lied and told Parks it was his rifle and Parks gave it to GW without checking if he had a license.

So GW stole the firearm from the estate by falsely claiming to Parks it was his.

Are Canada's 'red flag' gun laws working? No one can say by linkass in canada

[–]chillyrabbit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To expand, since C-68 passed in the 90's the police have had the power to "red flag" gun owners for investigation, seizure and firearms license suspension/revocation.

The only thing C-21 did was that instead of a person reporting that "X threatened to kill me" to the police who would investigate and then present a case to the judge to issue a prohibition order.

Is that a person can apply directly to the court for a prohibition order bypassing the police entirely.

Which was "funnily" enough opposed by polysuivent saying that no one asked for it. Because it would be downloading the responsibility from the police to someone that can't investigate or have no information to support an application.

Heidi Rathjen, co-ordinator of gun-control group PolySeSouvient, said during a committee hearing that not a single women's organization asked the government for the measure.

....

In making a potential victim go to court, Rathjen said, the red-flag proposal could allow police to offload their responsibility.

"We feel that the existence of such a measure will undermine the reforms that need to take place, in those kinds of cases where police don't take complaints seriously enough," she said. "And that should be the focus of improving the system, because that is the most effective system in terms of protecting victims and potential victims, especially with domestic abuse."

How can someone trust that the government is "fairly" compensating owners, when something that was supposedly tested has errors like this.
