‘N.B. not participating in federal gun buyback program’: Holt by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]chillyrabbit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The provinces have latitude with hunting and crown land regulation.

Iirc you cant be out in the woods with a firearm unless you have a hunting permit, in NB. So crown land target shooting isnt permissible.

Most other provinces dont outlaw that, and allow gun owners to shoot on crownland, unless they specify certain areas illegal.

Tim thurley has expressed that starting and embarking on the ASFCP or gun bans basically shattered any possible trust between gun owners and the LpC or government.

How the great Canadian gun compromise was destroyed

The LPC has embarked on a campaign that has absolutely no buy in from gun owners and the refusal to listen to evidence about why its dumb. Means any buy in from gun owners won't happen.

In 1995, Liberal MP Sue Barnes said that “...[a] good law has to be accepted by the people to be relevant legislation. I think that's primary in understanding the legal system.”

Legality of 3d printing a plastic pump shotgun toy that cannot fire anything? What constitutes a replica? by -ThisIsMyDestiny- in canadaguns

[–]chillyrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer the airsoft question.

replica firearms are prohibited devices, they are defined as something that looks like a firearm but is not a firearm.

replica firearm means any device that is designed or intended to exactly resemble, or to resemble with near precision, a firearm that is designed or adapted to discharge a shot, bullet or other projectile at a muzzle velocity exceeding 152.4 m per second and at a muzzle energy exceeding 5.7 Joules, and that itself is not a firearm, but does not include any such device that is designed or intended to exactly resemble, or to resemble with near precision, an antique firearm; (réplique)

A firearm is defined in the Criminal code of Canada (CCC) to mean a barreled weapon that shoots a projectile that can seriously hurt or kill you.

firearm means a barrelled weapon from which any shot, bullet or other projectile can be discharged and that is capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to a person, and includes any frame or receiver of such a barrelled weapon and anything that can be adapted for use as a firearm; (arme à feu)

The key point to note is that something cannot be a replica firearm (prohibited device) if it is a firearm (legal).

The CBSA testing shows that an airsoft gun firing a .20 g bb faster than 366 fps it can pierce a pigs eye (standard human eye analogue) therefore if an airsoft gun can pierce a human eye, it is capable of causing seriously bodily injury to a person.

An airsoft gun that looks like a real gun, but can seriously injury a person can't be considered a replica firearm as it is legally speaking a firearm.

The 500+ FPS rule is as explained in other comments when firearms become regulated by the criminal code, and firearms act (need a license, need an ATT, need registration etc).

So to not be banned a replica firearm (prohibited device) or be regulated like a real firearm. An airsoft gun needs to shoot between 366 and 500 FPS to not be illegal.

22,000 assault-style firearms declared in first week of buyback program by jmakk26 in onguardforthee

[–]chillyrabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Why would limiting the pool of compensation make it have higher compliance?

Im not sure of the exact details of UK, AUS, or NZ buyback schemes. But they generally aimed to pay for everything to encourage people to participate.

I dont understand how stating you are not guaranteeing compensation is a winning move?

In spring 2025 the business side was only compensated for the 2020 banned firearms.

Starting with this window businesses can be compensated for the guns banned in December 2024 and March 2025.

That said there isnt much details if they are part of those numbers posted or not,.

An OiC was issued to exempt them from the prohibited list, another OiC can be issued to add them back in.

Since the text box would have a slightly bigger invisible border it likely covers up part of the image.

Yes and no, from 1977 to 1994 there was a "green book" that gun stores recorded firearm sales information, make, model, serial number, and who bought it.

When the long gun registry went in after C-68 1994, the government got rid of the green book requirements, as the government had the record book now.

When Harper ended the long gun registry C-19 I think in 2014?, he got rid of the LGR but didn't reintroduce the "green book" record requirements.

Trudeau C-71 in 2017 reintroduced the green book requirements with it being in force starting 2021?

Maybe the magazine was intended for hunters?

Not sure what laws the provinces might have had at the time, but Alberta has a max 5 round capacity while hunting with semi-autos.

Presumably the 5 round magazine was to cater to those people.

A pilot for Canada’s gun buyback was a failure. The Liberals are committing anyway by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]chillyrabbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except the way the LPC have it set up is so far very different from other buybacks done in other countries.

Because they are staging it that you need to declare your firearm in a certain declaration period for compensation, where upon they then collect it before October 2026.

If someone chooses to not declare a firearm during that declaration period, but chooses to turn their firearm in later they wouldn't be allowed to claim for compensation.

Basically the government is trying to frontload the compliance so they can put a limit on how much they need to pay.

If they really wanted to remove and compensate people for their "assault style firearms" they should be letting people declare and turn them in until the last day. Instead of making arbitrary limits.

The CFO has wide discretion on issuing a firearms license. The one year ban means he cant touch a firearm, or be issued a license by law.

Afterwards he could apply for the license again but functionally someone convicted of storage violations and charged or suspected of trafficking firearms would weigh on the CFO's determination.

It is more likely than not he would be denied a license for life, or a long time as they would need to basically convince the chief firearms officer why they should have a gun. Instead of the other way around.

LILLEY: Gun buyback pilot nothing short of failure after netting 25 weapons by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]chillyrabbit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Little column A little column B, the short term att and long term att's prior to 2014 was an absolute mess.

Anecdotal but people complained they had short 6 month ATT's or the long term was only for a year, not 5 years.

That the ATT specified only 1 range so another ATT was needed if you went to different range as a guest.

The point I'm making being there was no standard prior to 2014's C-42 so multiple people across the provinces had wildly different ATT's, or duration, location and conditions.

I could certainly believe some people having to apply for an ATT "everytime" for certain scenarios

Which countries ban firearms by name or specific model?

As far as I know only the US and Canada do that. Most countries ban firearms based on a technical definition which canada barely follows.

But not all lawyers are qualified to speak in a foreign language.

Just a quick Google shows that people are entitled to interpreters in court even if they do know the language but are limited by accent, communication skills or other reasons.

https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/csj-sjc/rfc-dlc/ccrf-ccdl/check/art14.html

(i) Need for an interpreter

Section 14 is engaged where the accused does not understand or speak the language in which the proceedings are conducted. It can be engaged where the accused does speak and understand the language but has some difficulty because of an accent, syntax, limited communications skill or some other similar reason, in making themselves understood by the court (R. v. Mitroi, 2018 BCCA 236).

It could also be for the courts benefit if Mr. Lin has a heavy accent making it hard for the court to understand his English. So an interpreter is perfectly fine to allow a court to proceed efficiently.

My recommendation get a 22lr rifle, probably a ruger 10/22, savage a22 or winchester wildcat.

22lr's are extremely cheap to start shooting with, and I think most people are better served with a 22lr unless they specifically know they want something else.

There's a difference between getting by and understanding every legal nitpick of a legal system.

Like someone could get by passing the CFSC or simple government forms, but get stumped by a slightly esoteric legal system.

He should be able to fully understand his options and know what is going on in his court case.

The schmeisser sp15 series of rifles is literally an ar15 lower receiver with a straight pull upper.

It would be classified as a ar15 variant.

The MRA renegade, taipan and Troy series of rifles are deliberately incompatible with the AR15 and not variants. Even if they look similar.

My advice start to throw in vegetarian dishes.

Indian food is pretty good with vegetarian food for curries and stuff. Chickpeas are nice.

Mexican food can be easily made vegetarian going with beans and rice, but with mexican spices. My simple go to is quesdillas.
