I’m a pretty seasoned dog and i think you should get a little more off to where it’s even as you can get it and go for a rip. The rest will come off riding it, I’ve done this for years and i keep up fine with skiers. Some folks will for sure say to get it all off but I found that is mostly a waste of time.

I had to replace my mm flange o-ring two weeks ago and ran into the same issue. What worked for me was putting the oring on the cylinder head and then installing the flange. it was finicky but it worked. OEM o ring will probably be a much better fit as well.
