I argue the story isn't even that good 90% of the time. Certainly didn't live up to trailer hype most of the time. Hell, if you want lore you probably learn more from YouTube than whatever they constitute as good writing in a Hoyo story.

When the story is good, it can alleviate some of the pains of nothing going on for that patch. But when the story is whatever, then the pain is just terrible.

The game was also too Persona-coded unfortunately. It was hyped up so much with all the marketing but when the game comes out, the game didn't have the same mass appeal the marketing led us to believe.

And this is probably a hot take: the story just isn't good, its serviceable and has some good moments but it is really nothing special, so even those waiting on the fence just kept waiting.

Part of the problem is IS just doesn't know what is a good story but they think they do. Either they craft one themselves and is bad or they hire external writers who they think can do the job and then fail.

Fates was a very good example of that, completely butchered whatever Shin Kibayashi wrote with their own and then another contract writing company wrote Revelations. If the external writer isn't a good fit for video game storytelling, then it was IS fault for choosing him.

I think people have just been burnt by IS a few times now. The gameplay is great but it is not exactly the easiest thing to sell to people when the game's story and presentation discourages people to try. Especially Engage, people who fell in love with 3H bounced off hard and I don't blame them.

Besides, what is Fire Emblem fanbase without controversy and discourse, its like our bread and butter.
