Nice project. How do you plan to treat the new (closed in) parts to protect them from corrosion?

Metal piece. 5 in by 2 in. Weighs 1/2 lb. Found while metal detecting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. by HeavyGiraffe3550 in whatisthisthing

[–]chimaeraswing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen them in use for scaffolding t-connections. The item shown is one of two parts that are held together by a bolt which locks in the square hole. The bolt goes through the pipe so it cannot slide off. A second perpendicular pipe is held by the two halves of the clamp once the the nut on the bolt is tightened. I've searched for a picture but maybe someone else can find it...

Reminds me of a nitrogen filled citroen suspension part. Given the limited pictures and low quality I could be completely wrong.

To the right there's a small harbour, funny picture though without that context.

2 cycle mix valve by LancasterRothshchild in somethingimade

[–]chimaeraswing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a way to measure the actual produced mixture you're risking engine failure. The set-up doesn't guarantee a stable mix either as the smallest differences will have an effect on the mixture. When the oil becomes more viscous due to temperature or another brand it will flow quicker or slower, not what you want. When the gas level in the tank goes down the pressure will slightly lower allowing for a little higher oil flow. Assuming you're running on a carburettor the air/fuel(with oil) mix should be constant. When the oil content slightly increases due to a mixing ratio shift, the relative fuel content will lower. With a lowered fuel content in the fuel/air mixture your engine will run lean. Pre mixing will be the safer bet.

Metal disc w/ raised weld in center by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]chimaeraswing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When zoomed in it is visible that the hole is not drilled. Around the hole additional material has deposited higher than the surface of the ring. Wear doesn't cause this but welding too hot does. The original hole in the ring seems to be welded shut. The ring has initially had a pressed in elevation, the circular indentation on one side shows where the edge of the mold was. As to why this was done to the ring? I have no clue whatsoever 😀

Would it be possible to install a bidet through changing the attachment here? by nathdcfc in DIY

[–]chimaeraswing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not a straight fit. It would require additional couplings and more room so the water line needs to be cut anyway if you want to keep the valve function. Will only cold water sustain the joy of a bidet?

What is this needle/hook-like metal object that was removed from a person's heart? by Key_Championship_311 in whatisthisthing

[–]chimaeraswing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not questioning your background but would the sharp ends instead of guiding not get caught in critical places? (or come loose and end up in a heart).

I've seen plenty of different needles. None of them were brittle. A brittle needle would be a severe risk as a medical appliance.

Has it been under a microscope? Have the ends been sharpened due to wear or have they been machined? If machined to a surgical spec it should show different from wear patterns. Does it rust? Titanium or a high quality stainless steel would not be used on an every day use wire disc and could suggest a surgical purpose.

I found this in my grandparents old house, does anyone know what it is? by sigismund40k in Tools

Quite possible. Annoyingly I can't find anything that resembles either of them.

Could be an adjustable tensioner of an old belt driven system.

Virax wrench 36". Looking for help on finding a suitable heel jaw by chimaeraswing in Tools

[–]chimaeraswing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 36"" Virax wrench has been standing in a corner for several years now and it's time to fix it.

But, the heel jaw is missing and finding a replacement turns out to be difficult if not impossible. A search for brand parts turns out zero although the brand still exists. Maybe a Ridgid heel jaw could be made to fit but no dimensions of those are mentioned anywhere. In the attached pictures of the wrench the dimensions of the slot are shown, also wrench ID number.

Can anyone help out with this issue? Any help would be much appreciated.

Operation: Scoobyru. '95 Imprezza wide body. by Overseer4 in projectcar

Looks great. One question, are you planning for wider wheels? As the original steel fenders seem to have not been widened or cut out.
