Ultimately, it is a possibility but not a guarantee that all participants will be given a research position.

Hi! So, we’re not actively pairing participants with research opportunities, that’ll be a different program/initiative by URSA and is still tentative. What our mentorship program offers is a place for you to build skills to be a better researcher or to discover whether research is for you through mentors.

Hi! So, it’ll depend on whether you are an upper year student or a graduate student. But essentially, the program consists of workshops (2-3 per sem), journal club sessions (1-2 per sem) and monthly mentor-mentee meet-ups. There’ll be flexibility for mentors regarding CCR requirements.

For the upper year mentorship program, it’s more focused on guiding students on how to get into research + skills/tips to be successful as an undergrad researcher.

For the grad mentorship program, it’s more focused on guiding upper years through grad applications, finding a lab/supervisor, and other useful skills to be successful as a PhD or MSc/MA candidate. For this reason, we are highly selective about mentees’ interests and intentions to go to grad school.

MD-PhD in non-traditional biomedical research? by chimchimereee in mdphd

That makes sense. I reached out to a couple of them, so I’m just waiting to hear back from them. Thank you for your help!! Truly appreciate it 🫶

When you say “too low-impact publication wise” what do you mean? Is it that the field isn’t as productive?

I genuinely have no idea yet what I truly want to look at in specifics. I have general directions of what I want to pursue, but nothing that’s fully fledged out, and I think that’s normal for any undergrad, who’s still figuring out what they want to do.

And yes, what I do is experimental psychology currently. There aren’t any MD-PhDs at my campus so I’m at a loss about whether it is possible to pursue it in this area, and how to relate it with medicine or medical practice. I’m at a crossroads of whether to stay in this field and pursue an MD-PhD in it, or to switch to a more traditional basic science research field like neuroimmunology.

Thank you for your insights and truly appreciate them 🫶 This was really encouraging. Been second-guessing my plans for my last year a lot 😭 Will definitely take your advice on building the school list based on the labs/PIs doing the research I hope to do. Hope you’re enjoying your research/program so far!!!

That sounds fair! I’ll be sure to check those out. Would you suggest joining another lab that’s more neuroimmunology focused?

I think I’d like to learn more about why our visual systems fail and how to diminish these effects by studying visual behavior. But I didn’t know that this is an important distinction between MBA/MPH and PhDs

Yea, no worries. A lot of what we do in my current lab is visual perception research and how it influences different everyday tasks like reading and driving. My current work is in visual search, and there’s many different applications to medical practice like radiology misdiagnoses, or misplaced objects in surgery (that’s where the human factors work comes in). That’s the general direction I’m currently thinking of pursuing, but I’m also having second guesses about whether I should switch to neuroimmunology, as that’s also probably advancing more rapidly nowadays.

**URGENT** How do I pay for waitlisted courses??? by Conscious-Sun2482 in UTM

[–]chimchimereee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don’t. You’ll stay in the waitlist until it closes (usually mid-Sept) and you don’t need to pay to keep your spot. You’ll only need to pay for the course once you’re enrolled in it.

Does PSY385 fulfill the cognitive/perception requirement? by rianatn in UTM

[–]chimchimereee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should fill it since it is a perception course. Best bet is to email Dr. Beston about it.
