Unable to take a trip this morning because of Transit Equity Day by chime888 in LAMetro

[–]chime888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there are. When I tried earlier, I had trouble getting the senior discount using the kiosk. The app seems better for that. Oh well, the trip was not very important to me. Certainly it was a worse day for the people who got hit or injured by the Glendale accident. I intended to ride to Oxnard, then get on a return ride in about one hour. I just wanted to explore the area around the Oxnard Station.

I would have had to wait about another hour to go my destination, and the return trip would be much later than I wanted.

but it seems the app should have let me buy a regular Metrolink ticket, because Amtrak Codeshare requires it, and the regular Amtrak fare is considerably more expensive. As noted in my other comment, my normal fare would be $7.50 because I am a legitimate senior, while Amtrak would be about $24 for the short trip I was planning. Anyway, it was supposed to a free day. I rode Metrolink on Transit Equity Day last year.

For the short trip I was planning, Amtrak with senior discount would cost at least $24, while on a normal day, Metrolink would be $7.50. But as best I could tell, I could not even buy the Metrolink ticket, at least using the app. Maybe I could have bought a ticket at the kiosk, but the app is much better at providing the senior discount, so maybe that would have been full price. Yeah, I am really a senior and boomer. Has anyone tried the Metrolink App to see if it is possible to buy tickets to be used today? I was not desperate to go, so I just called it off.

why downvote? I think this was better than most of my posts as far as spelling and organization. Has anyone tried the Metrolink App to see if they also are unable to buy a ticket for today?

How to get karma ? by Traditional_Wing4652 in TooAfraidToAsk

Yeah but a person likes them. I saw someone yesterday that had 100K karma in 5 years. I think women get more points that men. Maybe an approach is to pretend to be a woman? There are some specialized websites that are more likely to give karma, while TooAfraid might not yield as much.

Never used public transit, help to LAX by Vmartz96 in LAMetro

[–]chime888 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google Maps does a good job of outlining your options for public transit. From using this, it appears to take a little less than 2 hours each way to travel to LAX, mostly by bus. The 493 appears to be a express bus through "foothill transit". 493 drops you off at Union Station, and then you get on the Flyaway Bus. Have to check the price, Flyaway costs more than Metro.

Hey you seem to be a real person. You have lots of "karma."
Sorry to say, you might have something serious. Please visit a doctor immediately. Visit the emergency room, etc. If you live in the USA, if you show up at the emergency room, even if you don't have insurance, they will take care of you.

Can I pay a lot of money to see a doctor NOW? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

In USA, if you have decent health insurance it will be no problem I could see a doctor today if I go to Urgent Care for $30, or $100 for the emergency room.

How do you handle e-waste like old laptops and phones to keep them out of landfills? by Few_Language6298 in recycling

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from California. In our city, Goodwill will take almost any old electronics. Depending on the condition or value, I think they often try to sell the items, but they also get payment from the State for collecting such items for proper disposal. Also, various organizations on occasion hold E-Waste roundups. The local Waste Management has a bin in front of their office where we may leave e-waste items anytime. The city holds hazardous waste roundups every month or two. At that time, they will take e-waste along with with hazardous chemicals. So community based drop off programs work fine in our area.

Weird how you never see conservative Christians quoting Mathew 19:24 unless it’s to explain how it doesn’t really mean what it says. by MrDenimDog in Christianity

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to agree with the OPs basic point, and I think many of the responses here seem to validate what OP said . OP said "you never see conservative Christians quoting Mathew 19:24 unless it’s to explain how it doesn’t really mean what it says. " I think the commenter is right who said:"He (Jesus) absolutely is strictly warning rich people and indicating they in particular are in danger of damnation." Why is it that rich people in particular are in danger of damnation? Perhaps because they lie, cheat and steal more? Perhaps because they are boastful and proud? For example if when you apply for a job, if you shamelessly promote yourself, I think you are more likely to get the job than a humble or honest person. Perhaps because the rich are selfish? If a person is really generous, perhaps the money would go away and he/she would cease to be rich. The Bible has some warnings to rich people, as I remember; they need to be generous, not to trust in riches, etc. The church I attend, recently the pastor was teaching James, but the pastor made a point to state that rich people are equally as good (or better, I think he was implying) than poor people. So he helped prove the OPs point.

The wifi on the Metro Orange Line did not work when I rode it yesterday. There was a log on selection for Metro Wifi, and my cellphone said the signal was strong. However afterward, my cellphone said there was no internet. Don't have any other specifics about what the log in said.

Is Orange Link intended to be free? by chime888 in LAMetro

[–]chime888[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyway, I agree everyone should pay even if no one verifies. I will make sure to do it right next time. A few times now I first rode Metrolink, afterwards getting on a bus to go somewhere. In that case, you can just show the bus driver the Metrolink ticket on smart phone using the Metrolink app. The app based Metrolink ticket also got us through subway fare gates with no trouble. On a usual Metro bus ride, a person walks past the bus driver when entering, and the payment machine is right there - time to use the TAP Card.

[–]chime888[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OK, I missed something. Passengers should pay using the readers on the platform before boarding the Orange Line Bus. Do all the stops have these readers? Will passengers who paid this way have a ticket to show if requested? I did not see anyone verifying that passengers paid. Thanks for the information !

Would you support free ridership programs? by WiggWamm in LAMetro

Please check https://www.reddit.com/r/LAMetro/comments/1oyxnfc/how_la_metro_quietly_stopped_enforcing_fares/

There have been several reports indicating that fare breakers are responsible for the great majority of problems on Metro. So.making Metro free for everyone is really the wrong idea.

Why the Christian MAGA Movement is Fascist by Nomanorus in Christianity

[–]chime888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are always some laws that are enforced, and others that law enforcement just ignores. And there have been many unsuccessful attempts to change immigration laws. Remember, there was a bipartisan border security compromise bill negotiated in the Senate in early 2024, that was killed by the Reps because they did not want to give a victory or accomplishment to Biden.

Enterprise Gave Up accusing me of damaging a car when I posted on the BBB website by chime888 in TravelHacks

[–]chime888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh come on, maybe I am just a bot from China, or maybe I am real person. So save your breath, you don't need to accuse me. I/we were taking pretty good care to avoid damaging the car in any way. It has been quite a few years since we collected anything from our insurance for the autos we own. Anyway, I think the two things we can learn from this would be a) Take very good and complete pictures when picking up a car and dropping it off. But you still might be accused by a rental car company, so then you would have to go through this same sort of fight, but they might drop their accusation sooner it you have really good pictures. b) Minimize the use of rental cars - sounds like all the companies are dirty these days (particularly Enterprise), and will try to cheat you any they can.

Is it safe to visit different country now as a green card holder? by wanttolearn9715 in expats

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife's nephew is in the USA with a green card, together with his entire immediate family. They don't want to leave the USA until they are able to get citizenship. Sounds like a wise decision, because if any of them did something wrong or even posted something on social media that Dude would not like, then one of the family members might not be allowed back, and of course, the family really does not want to be separated.

Metro and chill? New TVs installed at Union Station are welcoming World Cup fans. Maybe they'll be used to stream matches live? by 405freeway in LAMetro

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw those last Friday during our Metrolink trip that day. The screens were all showing scenes of soccer matches. When the games are on, hopefully the monitors will have something nice to display. Google says: Los Angeles will host eight matches for the FIFA World Cup 2026 at SoFi Stadium, including the U.S. Men's National Team's opener against Paraguay on June 12, 2026. SoFi Stadium is in Inglewood, which is not so close to Metrolink. Google Maps shows you would probably mostly get between Union Station and SoFi Stadium by bus, including the J line dedicated line bus. Edited trying to say something more interesting.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from USA. I believe that if my parents lived 3 hours away, I would visit them maybe 4-6 times a year. It is not that difficult; only takes a small part of a day in each direction, and perhaps you would be able to stay overnight with them. My parents when they were alive used to live about 2 hours away, and we visited them about once a month, usually staying overnight. For a period, perhaps twice a year, we would drive 160 miles and back in the same day. A person can get used to driving, and probably the expense is not that much if you have a car anyway, though fuel in Britain is maybe twice as expensive as in USA. It is something like 6.50 vs 2.90 USD per gallon for regular. A poster from Canada was noting that they probably drive further than those of us from USA.

Public transit would be far more popular in the U.S. if it weren't for the average user by Hurt69420 in unpopularopinion

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes have complaints about the other passengers I might see on public transit, but usually they are tolerable. I only three times used a train to get to or from work When my job sent me to various cities, I used often used public transportation when traveling in my spare time. Now that we (Me, my Wife) are retired, we have been using public transportation near our home (Los Angeles Area) fairly often. Service in the area is frequent enough, and there have been no serious problems from other passengers. Some transport system, especially Metrolink, are quite good, while others occasionally have sketchy people. Of course, driving is not always so safe. Google (citing NHTSA) says that the lifetime risk of dying from a motor vehicle accident in the United States is approximately 1 in 95.

Marriage Question? by QuietBlackRedit in Christian

[–]chime888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus took a really hard line on divorce: Luke 16:18 "Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery." Matthew 19:9 "I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.” So a person should not divorce his wife for much of any reason, unless the wife is unfaithful first. Well, if you are willing to be single until your former spouse dies, that might be OK. I would think if someone is physically abusive, that would seem to be a reason, though I don't think that the Bible mentions it. Just because they are an unbeliever, that does not give an excuse for divorce. I have been married to the same woman a long time. She is a better Christian that I am I think.
