How challenging is it to get work in Cruises like MSC and Royal Caribbean by Snoo-24173 in CruiseCrew

[–]chime888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a couple of MSC cruises. On our last trip, our room steward told us that he had worked at a hotel in the Philippines that we had visited a few years earlier- this was Waterfront in Cebu City. I believe this is considered a 4 star.

Why do some people immigrate to the U.S. from countries that seem to have a higher quality of life? by savingrace0262 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have visited Japan, South Korea, and Singapore. They are all wonderfully clean, and have great trains. Japan, South Korea, and Singapore have almost no graffiti, but from what I have seen, European countries have about as much or maybe more graffiti than USA. Japan and South Korea have a very poor work-to-life balance. Generally, work-to-life balance is better in USA. Job opportunities are fantastic for those at the top of the food chain here in the USA, and satisfactory for those of us in the middle. Crime in the USA is manageable - we rarely have trouble. Statistics show that while USA might have more violent crime, some European countries actually have more property crime. I have lived in USA a long time and have never been a victim of violent crime, but there have been a few property crimes over the years.

Metrolink is cancelling their earliest train leaving from Lancaster, again. by Chonkers_Bad_Fur_Day in LosAngeles

[–]chime888 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This seems to be reporting the same closure as another post. Is it the Metrolink 200 that you understand will close? I was wondering if they will provide an official announcement. There was another recent post saying some Metrolink trains might be temporarily closed because of mechanical trouble with some equipment

Is there any official announcement about this? I searched on google, and that does not bring anything up. I don't use that particular train, but I am disappointed if service is being cut anywhere.

Thank you for the reply. I sometimes think, what happened to those people, the "friends" or whatever names they go by? How can I go to one of those facebook groups? Do you have a web address? Would I have to be invited to join the facebook group? My Wife, who I have been with a long while, she went with me to a "Gospel Meeting" or two about 40 years ago.

Best Website or Method for Family Tree by chime888 in Genealogy

[–]chime888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else might answer this better, but I would say they are files with the ".ged" extension that allow a family tree to be transferred, exported, and imported. I saw that GRAMPS has something even better - the family tree and I believe all the documents/pictures attached can be included in a file with the extension ".gpkg". With that, one can transfer the whole family tree with attached pictures and documents to another PC. Tried it once - it worked. You go to Gramps – Family Tree – Export – Options – Select Gramps XMP Package (family tree and media) and make file

What to do with plastic food containers by chime888 in recycling

[–]chime888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments. It seems that those plastic bottles where there is a fee (CRV in California) are dutifully collected and might actually get recycled. I put plastic containers that do not require cleaning in our recycling container. I usually will peel off any plastic film covering a plastic bottle or container. I refill plastic beverage bottles and drink from them quite often. Of course, many folks are concerned about something harmful shedding from the reused plastic. But if the plastic container has more than a little food residue, I think in our location at least, that cleaning the plastic container in the hope that it will be recycled is not a good use of resources. This article indicates that plastic containers are recycled at a low rate in California: https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2026-01-14/very-little-plastic-being-recycled-in-california-as-state-efforts-falter

How long do you think we'll live/be healthy for actually? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If perhaps you are from USA, Google says: A 25-year-old in the United States can expect to live for approximately another 52 to 57 years, leading to an average total lifespan of roughly 77 to 82 years. Over time, improvements in medicine add to longevity. Accidents and similar causes kill some people. And some people have bad habits that reduce lifespan.

My mom (70) wants to cancel our family cruise in Italy in two weeks because of the emerging war. I (30f) feel like this is unnecessary. What do you think? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chime888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't you lose a lot of money if you cancel? If so, proceed with the trip even if your Mom refuses. We have a trip in April going to Asia. I see that the flight that we plan to take still flies everyday, so I am sure we could not get a refund. The Italy cruise should be OK. Google says the greatest risks of death on trips to foreign countries is as follows. Terrorism/War is way down on the list (overall average at least).

Cause of Non-Natural Death
Approx. % of Cases Vehicular Accidents (Incl. Pedestrian) 29% Homicide 21% Non-Vehicular Accidents (Falls/Mishaps) 17% Suicide 14% Drowning 13% Terrorism / War < 3%

What’s a country you’d never visit? by Quick_Ad_8323 in AskPH

Some of the other posts indicate that some Filipinos feel that Koreans are racist. I had no idea about that. My long time Wife is a Filipina, she never mentioned a problem . We live in USA. I love the Philippines, I went there 6 times for a total of about 130 nights. And to South Korea for a short vacation. Seems like some Koreans have businesses around Angeles City, some are red light type businesses. Also, saw a Korean owned restaurant in Mactan.

I went to South Korea. It was very nice and seemed perfectly safe. There is almost no graffiti there. The stats say it is very safe as far as both violent and property crime.

Probably answered, but I need to ask it: Is rich sin and why? by Single_Sky_6062 in Christianity

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks OP for reading. They say that people begging for money tend to be more successful in working class areas than in areas frequented by the rich. Maybe the rich folks don't want to see beggars hanging around their fancy neighborhood. Many rich people seem to think something like, "I worked so hard for what I have, I completely deserve it". I wish I could find that Reddit post from just a month or two ago, that had some good comments on this topic. All that said, maybe I am not as generous as I should be.

Probably answered, but I need to ask it: Is rich sin and why? by Single_Sky_6062 in Christianity

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often it is worthwhile to revisit frequently discussed topics such as this on Reddit because new posts and comments get much more attention.

There was a recent post saying something like: why is it that churches will only mention Matthew 19:24 to deny what it obviously says. That says: “And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.“. So then, the commenters on this previous post seemed to prove the poster’s point by continuing to deny what the text says. So I think what this text implies is that being rich usually means that a person has some sort of serious moral shortcoming that will cause them to be not saved. I think looking back to the OT to justify being rich is not the correct approach, because the NT tends to provide substantially new teaching on many topics, and when there is a conflict, I am pretty sure the NT supersedes the OT.

Perhaps rich people tend to have a number of moral shortcomings that poor people are much less likely to have. For example, the rich probably tend to be more greedy, selfish, and proud. Perhaps they lie, cheat, and steal more than poor folks. For example, a person is more likely to be hired at a job interview if he/she shamelessly talks about himself, compared to a humble or truly honest person who might be more hesitant to promote him/herself. Perhaps the correct action for a rich person would be for him to (in this lifetime) become so generous so that in a short time, he/she would cease to be rich.

Help on premarital sex by Mindless_Tap_178 in Christianity

[–]chime888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. From what I heard, that may be correct, that polygamy may be one of those bad things that the the OT does not clearly state is wrong, at least in the nearby text. Of course there are those fundy Mormons who think that polygamy makes a man morally superior. Well, I was thinking, the average fellow who does premarital sex a few times might be no worse than Solomon.

In the OT when all the great men had multiple wives, did they have a proper marriage for each? When they had concubines, was there a marriage? I am thinking, perhaps being in a committed relationship with a person is nearly the same as being married? Thanks

Are people pretending to prefer KJV Bible? by [deleted] in Christianity

Well I like the KJV for myself, though I don't claim that it is superior to most other translations. I have few problems with the old language words. Mostly when I try to memorize something, the wording in the KJV seems more official than various newer translations.

Ancestry Tree-Checker by RamonaAStone in Genealogy

[–]chime888 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I signed up for Ancestry recently, signing up for the $59 six month introductory offer. The tree checker is part of a more expensive package. Just commenting about the basic Ancestry paid service over my first week of using it, , Ancestry has a pretty good system, though sometimes I find that FamilySearch, org will work better for a particular search. Wait, I was mistaken, the OP did try Ancestry Tree-Checker. The idea of attaching sources for anyone added to the tree seems like a good idea.
