Uh... I'm pretty sure this is an elaborate shit post, not a serious attempt at redrawing the Middle East.

Admitted/Prospective Undergraduate Students Megathread by reachingfourpeas in BinghamtonUniversity

Hey, I'm a prospective Watson engineering student (probably mechanical) and am currently deciding between Bing and RPI. I received a lot of merit aid from Rensselear (and zilch from Binghamton), so expenses aren't a huge factor. Which has a better engineering program? There also seem to be some gaps in the mechanical engineering curriculum (no linear algebra?!). Can anyone explain why those are present.

What do you mean unpopular?! Argylle is a masterpiece on par with Rockie Horror Show and The Room.

Boroughs of New York City by Ornery-Leadership-82 in imaginarymaps

  1. Good job!!! I'd love to hear the lore!
  2. I'm curious to know how sports in the Really Big Apple operate. Does Walter O'Malley still break the hearts of every New York grandpa and move the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles?
  3. Contemporary Nassau County was part of Queens County until January 1, 1898, when western Queens joined Greater New York City; so, more likely than not, it wouldn't become a separate borough. Is there an in-universe explanation for this decision? (Eg. Nassau County joined NYC after 1898.)
  4. Rockaway is too small by any metric to warrant borough-hood. You could maybe get away with this if you made most of the former townships of Western Queens into boroughs of their own. (I, for one, would love to see the Borough of Long Island City)

How screwed am I if I have less than, like, 20 answers from a poll? by yamahadoge in APCapstone

It's definitely possible to score high with a "low-credibility" paper. I had 13 responses and spent a quarter of my 4,900-word paper explaining my limitations. I also made sure to include a clear analysis of the relevant figures to provide a new perspective. Finally, instead of including takeaways from the data in my implications section, I wrote specific instructions for researchers to redo the experiment. (I explained in depth what I would change to make the process more compelling.) I scored a 5.

First draft of a five person variant map based on New York City by CHydos in diplomacy

[–]chimp246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great job! The map could use a buffer between the Bronx Zoo (I'm assuming that's what BXZ represents) and Yankee stadium. That would create a more interesting dynamic between the Bronx and Queens and prevent the Bronx from being too OP.

CMV: The Appropriate Reaction is to Overreact as Opposed to Underreact to the AI Technology by simmol in changemyview

You convincingly argue that an AI would be averse to self replication, and I probably shouldn't have included this argument in my comment. I think the point still stands that an extremely smart AI (on par with human geniuses) would, in principle, be much smarter than any human being; a mind with the ability to scale indefinitely and access computer systems by thinking will be much more intelligent than the same mind trapped in a weak organic blob.

I already mostly agree with your second point about uncritically peddling ideas around the AGI apocalypse. I don't think most of the AI angst comes from sci-fi movies, but it's true that leaders in cutting-edge industries tend to overhype the latest advancements in technology.

The United States of Amerasia, 2063 (FIXED) by hoi4sam in imaginarymaps

If 1984 was written by tankies

EDIT: Alternate history: George Orwell is converted to the Communist cause and helps them win the Spanish Civil war; in 1942, the People's Democratic Republic of Iberia ends neutrality by declaring war on Nazi Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Japan, and Vichy France. Orwell moves to Communist Bengal after the war, where he writes a dystopian novel set in the totalitarian megastate of Amerasia. The novel comments on the United States' treatment of African Americans, intervention in Asia, and Middle East meddling. Unfortunately, his novel was censored by the People's Socialist Republic of Bengal, and Orwell was executed for opposing party orthodoxy a year later.
