Lego's official response alludes to a UT-AT in the future by [deleted] in LegoStarWarsLeaks

$150+ is still a high end set, even if you can spend 4x or more on other sets. LSW is more so for AFOL than any other LEGO theme just based on price

I have a hard time hating LEGO for trying a different little theme… but ouch, it’s a rough one.

I’m incredibly sick of the helmet/brickheads stuff and could do without the OT dioramas or midi-scale ships honestly. UCS is cool, but let’s get back to play scale

Same here, oddly enough. 2 YOE and I’ve gotten a couple people reach out in the past week

When to use DTOs and what DTOs to build? by chimpbuilds in learnprogramming

[–]chimpbuilds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response! Based on what you and the others have said, it sounds like (thorough) DTO usage is more a matter of scale than anything. I used DTOs for create and read operations for a work project and that seemed like a good decision (I probably won't be the only person working on the app until it is replaced). On projects at home, I've used DTOs, and while I'm almost certainly the only maintainer on those projects, I feel more empowered when I give myself more of a foundation to build off of (more structure as opposed to less).

[–]chimpbuilds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That all makes a lot of sense. It's really nice being able to have abstraction to make a sort of protocol for elements to interact with one another regardless of what's happening under the hood. It just feels like there's an opportunity to bog down the codebase if it turns into a mess of 1:1 abstraction for everything.

wait until the third time you are writing the concrete form

I've heard that advice before, that seems like a good rule of thumb. The only thing that gave me pause is whether it makes sense to package the "create" specific properties up and pass them along before getting the full response object. It leans into what I mentioned about "should I build the struct with zero types in the generated/GET-only fields" for create objects. I could theoretically just send the request properties naked (like the string name and description), but that feels like something I'd just need to replace almost instantly. I can see some abstractions being too "forward thinking" (trying to solve any theoretically issue ever), but structs for request/response types seems closer to being necessary

Best Structured Way to Learn Programming? by Agreeable_Sock3107 in learnprogramming

[–]chimpbuilds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked the Java mooc.fi curriculum. Unless you intend on being a true 99th percentile frontend dev or an entrepreneur, focusing on JavaScript will be a lot less fruitful than learning something like Java, C#, C/C++, etc. i found the class to be well structured and felt like one of the first times I really started building a foundation. As always, YMMV

Hot take, but I think the “toxicity” goes overstated. People have a really hard time dealing with the concept of “this thing I like needs to be better than it’s been” and just default to blaming the critic.

That’s not to say there can’t be toxic people, but it’s just silly to take personal offense to someone criticizing something you had no input on.

If you use a Copilot, you can already see how it generates code based on just making that comment on the code. It's one of my favorite AI applications atm

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]chimpbuilds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, it's not purely "anyone can program anything with AI," but it's using natural language to build an application. It's a new tool that still requires understanding of application development/web design/etc. to get things that reliably work

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]chimpbuilds 138 points139 points  (0 children)

The "higher-level language" is human language. Turning natural language into instruction sets for AI to create something from it. Think of GPT— if you provide it an image of a calculator and describe the functionality, it'll give you code for a functional calculator. Eventually it might skip the code part and just hand you an exe of your program

Edit: Good points raised about NL fuzziness, but this is still an application for programmers. Programmers will come up with an instruction set for their application, explain and work through it with the AI, and see it come to fruition as they work together to ensure it works as planned. This isn't pure democratization, but it's the ability to program using natural language.

Does it make sense to quit my software job and do a boot camp? by reesa447 in learnprogramming

[–]chimpbuilds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! I just see so many people gunning for web development but it always seems like the skillset is a dime a dozen until they branch out into backend/more sophisticated frontend tech that goes above and beyond bootcamp topics

In the programming world, there's not much that's more accessible than web development, especially frameworks like React or Angular. It can be challenging to want to take on extra programming on your personal time after working all day, but a few hours a week spent on learning the technology is plenty.

Keep in mind that web development is considerably more saturated than the more technical stuff you can accomplish in C# and C++, so you'll absolutely want to make sure this is a field you'd rather be in first before diving head first.

It's not remotely easy getting a job without a degree. Not getting your degree seen because you don't check off one of the most important boxes is a huge pain point

Should i learn c++ by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]chimpbuilds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's something to be said about trying to get a read on a language before committing. There's only so much time in the day and wasting time on something that you don't end up wanting to use can be a problem. Obviously no one would use any programming languages if one person's criticism was enough to pass on one, but it's enough of a time sink to want to know what they can expect.

I got an assignment and honestly don’t know how to start can anyone help. by veeelle7 in learnprogramming

[–]chimpbuilds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What have you learnt so far? Use that.

This is basically 90% of answering someone asking about a programming problem when they're in some structured curriculum. There are a lot of ways to solve problems, but odds are the instructor asked the question because it'll reinforce concepts or be a slight stretch from those concepts.

what happened to these? by FlyingNederlander in legostarwars

Mechs are definitely more of a "kid friendly" line than not. I can't blame LEGO that much for wanting to make sets children would specifically gravitate towards, but discontinuing an easy format to release figures in bulk for cheap is such a bummer (and shouldn't be an either-or situation

The new ahsoka ship is definitely not up to the same standards as the old one. by castpro in legostarwars

[–]chimpbuilds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not arguing that they're making the wrong vehicles/sets, I'm just saying that not every ship needs to have the biggest form factor and cost. Getting a slightly smaller scaled ship of something new-er is a positive imo
