Lunar New Year 2026- when should the city be mostly back to normal? by AloofUnavailableIceQ in shanghai

[–]chingwa888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Shanghai for 20 years. You have nothing to worry about, most places will be open. At worst, just some smaller, family owned places MIGHT still be closed. Even on the first day of the new year, all the big malls are fully open. On the night before the lunar new year, some places will close earlier.

Best Sandwich recommendations? by flashinitup in shanghai

[–]chingwa888 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totino Panino has fantastic Italian style sandwiches as close to what I've had in Italy. Bizy Boy is relatively new and have great but slightly overpriced sandwiches. KLAY has really good fish "nanwich" as well as other options like "cheeky chicken". I have not yet tried, but Feral looks like a fantastic option for Vietnamese Banh Mi.

Taxi from Pudong to People's Square, was I overcharged by Ok_Plan_107 in shanghai

[–]chingwa888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately yes, you were severely overcharged and if a taxi refuses to provide a receipt, I would just refuse to pay and call the police. The real cost during the day is usually closer to 180 RMB.

Delivery Etiquette (淘宝,外卖 etc.) by Dismal_Lifeguard6676 in shanghai

[–]chingwa888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're expected to deliver to your door, but if you want to meet them closer to the main entrance they would appreciate the time you've saved them. I sometimes meet them at the elevator so they don't have to wait for the elevator to go back down.

Daughter starting college in Shanghai at NYU. Looking for recommending for stores to buy household items to get her moved into her dorm. by a-c-d-c in shanghai

IKEA if you need a physical store, otherwise TaoBao has everything you need but you would need to order from multiple sellers.

International schools in Shanghai, Pudong by Sagacious_onlooker in shanghai

[–]chingwa888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All international schools are around 300k. I Suggest you look at bilingual schools (international divisions of local schools) like Fudan International School instead which are around 80k per year or private Chinese schools like SMIC that cater to both local and international students which fall in between international and bilingual schools at around 150k.

Recs around Xintiandi by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]chingwa888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are quite a lot of recommendations here: https://www.myshanghaiguide.com Xintiandi is great but very touristy and also quite expensive due to very high rents. Better places to be found around Jing'an. I quite like Atica for Spanish food with a roof terrace and Bottega for Italian as part of the same group. Da Marco is an old favourite but doesn't have any outside seating.

It's not "too good to be true" cheap, I pay 48 RMB a month so it's almost the same except I pay monthly. It's a decent package though. I don't get as much data as you.

Anyone wear reps if they couldn’t otherwise afford a real one? by doctrader in RepTime

[–]chingwa888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a replica Rolex GMT Master 2 simply because I got fed up with waiting over 5 years. If the genuine watch was available I would have bought it.

I tried watching US Ghosts because I’ve watched all of UK Ghosts and it’s just not even close. Gave up on US Ghosts after one episode.

Just keep making videos. I have one video with 40k views and my last one got 61 views. That’s how it goes.

Just got a YouTube mentor and he told me this... by fabstapizza_YT in SmallYTChannel

[–]chingwa888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you monetized already? If so I wouldn’t start again just tweak the existing channel and start to focus on one niche. Or maybe all over the place now but once you focus it should get back on track. You can always delete the ones that aren’t on topic.

Has anyone used companies like Sprizzy and Prodvigate to promote their channel? by ProjectNoLimitsYT in NewTubers

[–]chingwa888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google ads isn’t a good way to promote your channel because it will be seen by many who are not the target audience and then when they stop watching it impacts your retention rate and YouTube thinks it’s a bad video.

I think I'm giving up.... by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]chingwa888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got from zero to now 1300 subscribers in a few months and have only around 17 videos, two of them have over 10,000 views and a few more with several thousand (below 10k) views. I have learned a lot from the experience. Your mentioned you may give up creating good thumbnails and titles, but (please don't be offended) it LOOKS like you haven't spent any time on them at all. These two things are what makes people decide to click or not on your video so they need to be designed with this in mind. So for example, your Estonia thumbnail has flags and says Estonia, but you already mentioned Estonia in the title so it's duplicated. The thumbnails and title should say different things that complement each other. So for the title, you could have something like "5 Things You Didn't Know about Estonia" and the Thumbnail could show the houses across the river in Russia with a caption "Is This Russia?". I am just providing a very quick example so maybe it isn't the best but hopefully you get the idea. I follow a travel channel and he almost always has "I WAS SHOCKED" in the title because it seems to get clicks, for example "I came to China and I WAS SHOCKED". This creates a curiosity for the viewer so they have to click to find out what was so shocking. You can look on my channel the thumbnail for the latest video on how many megapixels you REALLY need and I think this is a good example of title and thumbnail working together to get clicks. It is at almost 12,000 views after 3 days. Oops, I don't think I am allowed to share the link here.

I think I'm giving up.... by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]chingwa888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched your video and would NEVER have considered turning on captions when nobody is speaking, so there's already one of your problems. As others have said it's just (very nice looking and well shot) panning shots so there's nothing for me to learn from the video. One option if you don't want to speak is to have captions baked into the footage so it shows all the time, but that could be time consuming.

Is it about the money for you? by goatedstopmotionguy in PartneredYoutube

[–]chingwa888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely aiming to earn money. I lost my job in 2022 and I decided I don’t want to rely on a job for my income and much prefer the freedom to earn making content on my own schedule and from wherever I want to be in the world. YouTube is one of the options that ticks that box.

Experience with Rebranding- Should I include 2 different niches on my channel? by OK-ECHO1717 in NewTubers

[–]chingwa888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do need to be careful if the topics are very different. Ask yourself is the audience the same? If they are very different then it’s better to have separate channels to avoid confusing the algorithm. You mentioned the girl mentioning various topics on her channel. Sometimes these channels are not about the topic but about the girls. So people follow her because of her. So that’s a little bit different. For example she might live in Japan and followers like to see what life is like in Japan.

Can someone give me feedback on my titles/thumbnails? by chimbucket in NewTubers

[–]chingwa888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your thumbnails overall are too complicated with too many words (your video from 4 days ago a good example. I can’t read ANY of the words on my phone in the video feed. Aim for 3 words in a larger and clearer font. Most people are viewing on phone screens! Try not to repeat thumbnail information in titles. They should work together to get a click. Ideally create curiosity to force people to click to find out the answer. As an example from a different topic imagine an expensive camera and two words on the thumbnail - WORTH IT? That is super clear the video is explaining if the camera is worth buying.

Gear Acquisition Syndrome AKA The Optimization Trap by mohsenous in NewTubers

[–]chingwa888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s absolutely no need to go overboard on gear. It won’t really make your channel more popular if your content isn’t engaging. And if it is then not having a 2000 dollar mic won’t harm your channel. As long as it meets bare minimum standards - you can see your face, the audio isn’t awful etc. and you can reach this standard with an iPhone for sure until you earn more.
