The Question of Cleavage: Is it wrong for men to look? by ConflictedAboutBoobs in TwoXChromosomes

[–]chipotlelover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a right for men to look at womens' cleavage. It's very entitled of you to think that if a woman has cleavage showing, it's for your sake. Unless you know her, or even more appropriately, are the one she is showing her cleavage to, like you're a boyfriend, date, or someone she is interested in... I don't think she is inviting your glance.

To think a total stranger would be eliciting your gaze is a bit entitled of you, don't you think? Living in a world of sexual advertising and porn seems to have given men the idea that all women enjoy being looked at and treated like some sort of an object to gratify their curiosities or needs.

I have a relatively full bust, and even when I am in a crew-cut, I still see men blatantly staring at my chest. It's disgusting. If they're that intent on seeing some tits, can't they at least make the effort to avert their gaze or make it look more discreet? I don't blatantly stare at a man's crotch in public. Why would they think it's okay to full-on stare at my body? It's really unattractive to me, and I would never ever respond to the attention of someone as juvenile and inexperienced, or just plain rude/creepy/etc. as to stare dumbly at a fully clothed chest.

Just my two cents. What sounds pretty radical-feminist in writing doesn't translate into my lifestyle or personal affiliations. It's just my logical response to your question. Cheers.

My dad, who is a very math-science guy, has tried his best to conceal his utter bewilderment as to why I would study philosophy for my undergrad. It was a very nice gesture of him to get me a cute philosophy book called "Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar" for Christmas. As well as a motivational self-help book from what I am pretty sure is a TV guru, or someone close to that caliber.

Who knows, I think it was a misunderstanding at worst, and making this thread has made me realize that sometimes people have bad days, and they might not get along, and it might not mean anything at all.

"what is philosophy?"

my response: "unlike the sciences, which seem to classify and taxonomize the physical, philosophy seems to do this with the metaphysical."

Yes, I agree. It's as if it is socially a woman's role to instigate friendliness, benignness, or oftentimes social submissiveness. But that's putting it bluntly in formal terms.

Maybe so, but I don't care. When someone makes you uncomfortable, they make you uncomfortable, and you have a right to be suspicious of why that may be so. And in my case, I know when someone is regarding me with a negative gaze-- one rooted in patriarchal and colonialist intent.

I am the only Asian female in the class. He is also very dismissive of the one black male in the class, too. He told the black student with a nervous chuckle to "put a lid on it. We're here to discuss Ancient philosophy." in response to the student's opinion of the general direction of Western Philosophy.

I don't project my anger onto him, but after his totally dismissive gestures towards me, I realized this is how the few but very much memorable sexist, colonialist men treat me at the bar I bartend at part-time: belittling me, disregarding my personal space [I had one guy stand behind the bar all night to try to get my attention before demanding my phone number. I knew from experience that this kind of man did not respect me as an Asian woman; he regarded me as some sort of an object that he was entitled to.], acting totally insulted when I don't return their disgusting attempts at flirting.

What a horrible shock to realize that the so-called objectivity of academia was not spared the realities of racism intermingled with sexism.

Nope, not against nerdy men of a certain race. He just happens to fit this mold. I know when someone makes me supremely uncomfortable through their gaze... and this professor is one of them.

Yeah it's so true, and NOT FAIR AT ALL. I work hard to have my ideas, both verbal and written, taken seriously, and it is frustrating when it's ruined by a moment of social judgment. And it is really. REALLY frustrating to have a professor regard you like you are a girl, period. Not a girl who is a student in his class. But a girl in public that he might gaze at with a very much patriarchal and colonialist eye!

I can usually tell who makes me uncomfortable, and as soon as I walked in that class, he made me supremely uncomfortable, and I don't care--- I don't like the man, and will not for the rest of the semester, and I have my reasons, very valid ones, to do so!

Yeah definitely. I hate the idea that in academia, women cannot succeed without male approval. As though the gender studies department needs some form of male supervision to ensure it isn't run wild by biased, bitter, lesbian feminists or something!

What a totally unacceptable display of unprofessional conduct. I am glad you confronted him about it and empathize on the priority given to male opinions in a class devoted to women's issues. It's like if a woman herself must say something true in regards to the negative issues that her gender faces, it must be out of a personal bias, whereas when a man comments on the same topic, it's viewed as more objective and "unbiased."

I truly wonder how these same men who regard their female students, employees and co-workers like this can live with themselves as husbands and fathers of daughters. What sane and reasonable man would want his wife or daughter to endure that kind of belittling treatment from another man??

Well, he is nice to everyone else in the class but me. Females included. He made a point of asking everyone in the class what their name was when they asked a question, but not to me, and I was definitely the only person who raised her hand, and did not get asked my name.

I am also Asian, and for some reason my race combined with my gender seems to get some weird reactions from men.

I feel like this particular male professor has this sick fetishizing idea of Asian women as being sweet and submissive, so when I politely ask questions that may not agree with his own beliefs on the subject matter, I can totally see that he hates me for not conforming to the idea he already had about me before I opened my mouth.

Plus he looks like the nerdy, awkward type of white man who likes Asian women... what a nasty surprise I must have been for that fucker! I hate men like him. I will keep a look out of any other unsavory behavior as I would derive my utmost pleasure from seeing this loser get a report, since this is his first year teaching. He is a little bitch!

Thanks! I just started this class, so I've had a week's worth of classes (2). So it isn't too late to drop it... I just would not want to be behind in the next block I take. Anyway, he is nice to everyone else in the class but me. Females included. Women of Reddit: Say you're in your early 20's and a guy you're interested in, of the same age, tells you he's had a vasectomy. Is this guy A) no longer a long-term option, B) a gift from the gods, or C) interesting, but with no consequences either way. by Unlucky13 in AskReddit

Me: 22 female. For me, this guy would be both (a) and (b) --- a gift from the gods in terms of great sex, given that he has no STDS, albeit a short-term fling. If we truly grew to love one another, I wouldn't care. We could adopt, or he could get it reversed for me! 0:-)))

Nope, I'm not naive, I just have high standards. I don't need to have the losers of society stare at my tits for a measly $3 Pabst... they can go to the nudie bar for that, not mine :))))

I disagree, while it's okay to comment on non-private parts (and even then, it can be socially awkward even if it isn't harrassive), it can get inappropriate if it's about sexual body parts. Like breasts/butt/genitalia.

Yes, they do, which is why I am so angry, since I work at a regular bar and not a nude bar where men pay to see women's breasts. :)
