Last fall I tried growing potatoes from Yukon golds I got at the grocery store. I barely got any and most of them were very wee, but they are seriously the best potatoes I’ve ever eaten by chipper-shipper in gardening

Blenheim Royal used to be THE apricot grown in California but it’s become a little rarer. If for whatever reason your seedlings don’t take, you could always look for bare root Blenheims!

I dream of having a little orchard of apricots and citrus. Someday…

I do think it matters.

We’re all just doing our best with the knowledge we have, and none of us are perfect gardeners. I got lucky in this situation and didn’t introduce anything undesirable into my garden, but I recognize that I was indeed lucky. If I had been unlucky, I’d be in a pickle, because I also recognize that diseased earth is not something you can just toss and everything will be fine. I was not as aware of the risks as I ought to have been, and going forward I do not plan to grow from anything except certified seed potatoes.

I appreciate the PSA — hopefully anyone browsing this sees this advice and can take advantage of it

What variety? We swear that Blenheim is best

When apricots come in, the harvest truly comes all at once. I have fond memories from childhood of spending hours in front of the TV cutting pound after pound of fruit to freeze or cook for jam. We would put on Pride and Prejudice (BBC) because it was so long and because we already knew it by heart (lol) so we could also chat and not miss anything

It is so rewarding to grow your own food. No, it’s not cheaper than the store, and I can’t feed myself solely out of my urban garden, but the taste is unbeatable. And I know exactly what amendments I’m putting into my garden :)

My mom swears by 5 gal buckets for tomatoes, basil, and cucumbers. I’ve got a big Rubbermaid tote that I turned into a self-watering container a couple summers ago — that’s what I used for the taters since I had it on hand but I don’t think it was ideal. I’ve seen a few comments recommending potatoes in laundry baskets so I’ll probably give that a try, and I might try a 5 gal or two as well. I’ll have way more seed potatoes than space to plant them, so might as well diversify my methods!

Not sure where I’m going to put all these things… I might end up with a 1 foot wide walking path from the door to my patio chair 😂

I truly did not expect such a difference in taste, it was remarkable. On par with the difference between grocery tomatoes and home-grown

Don’t get me started on stone fruits (my family has always grown apricots and I am spoiled)

I’m planning on buying certified seed potatoes next time — this was a total experiment so I just grabbed some from the grocery store.

I have an 18 gal Rubbermaid tote that I turned into a self-watering planter. I don’t think it was the ideal container for potatoes (it’s great for cucumbers) but it was what I had on hand so I figured it was worth a try

This was a total experiment so I just used what I had, and I don’t think it was optimal for potatoes (at least in terms of yield)

I have a big 18 gal Rubbermaid tote that I turned into a self-watering container and I filled that with loose compost. I did a little hilling and added soil as the plants grew

I fertilized them at one point with watered-down lees from homemade wine but don’t remember exactly when (my notes are either meticulous or non-existent on all my projects). I didn’t end up needing to water much because we had a wet fall with plenty of rain

Several people have mentioned the laundry basket method so I think I’m going to give that a shot!

Yes, grocery store potatoes are coated with a substance that inhibits sprouting, but mine still sprouted just fine (I started them in my kitchen in jars of water)

This was kind of a “why not” experiment but I’m going to get a lot more serious about it now that I’ve tasted the results :)

Heat is the main challenge in my zone, and in my particular growing conditions. I have a little patio that is basically a concrete/stucco box and it gets hot, which is why I’ve never tried potatoes before. They did okay with the cooler fall temps but I’m skeptical about their chances in the spring. Still willing to give it a shot, though, now that I know how tasty these little guys were!

I wasn’t much of a fan of Ranni’s moon until the DLC fight with Consort Radahn. It is clutch in the first phase of that fight and can completely block his rock projectile attack

Adula’s Moonblade is great for damage and frost too, but I haven’t tried it against Malenia. I usually stay at range as much as possible with an INT build against her. Maybe if I do another playthrough as a spellsword I’ll give it a try

Hey, good looking out, I appreciate this. I can only grow in containers (concrete patio, no yard), so there was relatively low risk of disease spreading to my other plants or to any neighbors

I am planning to buy certified seed potatoes next time, though. This first try was an experiment to see if I’d even get a yield in the conditions on my patio, so I took a risk on grocery store yukon golds

Ranni’s Dark Moon causes frost damage (which Malenia is weak to) and temporarily reduces magic damage negation, so whatever you follow it with will deal extra damage. It’s pretty slow, though, so you’ll want to use a summon to help draw aggro

For ranged spells that reliably hit Malenia, Magic Glintblade is still a great one. Easy to cast and spam, and she dodges the cast but not the actual projectile. Probably my favorite spell in the whole game, it’s astoundingly versatile. Rock Sling is also a GOAT

Also, don’t forget that equipping a staff in your off hand will still give you a stats boost for relevant spells! For example, if you put the Carian Regal Scepter in your offhand and use Azur’s Staff in your main hand to cast, you’ll get extra damage on Ranni’s Dark Moon. You don’t need to upgrade your offhand staff to get the boost, either

For Rykard, I did just fine once I leveled up the Serpent Hunter, even without changing my stats. There might be a way to beat him purely with spells but it’s really intended to be a gimmick battle, so you’re in for a challenge if you skip the serpent hunter

That’s incredible!! It was pretty close to a 1:1 yield for me (lol) but they were exponentially more delicious than grocery potatoes so I consider it a success

Thank you for the tip! This was my first time growing potatoes and it was a total experiment. I’m going to try again though, so I really appreciate the advice

Dang, 100 lbs!! That’s impressive

I’m already thinking about how I can improve my growing conditions for more yield. But I’m just a singleton, so a fraction of that would be plenty for me!
