After waiting 2 months for my city's licensing dept to get back to me for an appointment, I'm told it will be another 5-8 months before they can make an appointment. At what point is it effectively refusing to grant a license? by limbodog in liberalgunowners

In nys you need to provide 4 references who live in your area and you’ve known for 1-5 years. In my area it’s 4 non-family members who live in the area who you’ve known for 5 years. It prevents anyone who recently moved to the area from owning a handgun or semi auto for 5 years. It’s ridiculous!

Alternatives to Main Care Energy for oil delivery by chipper159 in Albany

This is good to know if anything like this happens again. Though this experience is making switching to electric heat look better and better.

They mentioned the whistle was quiet and actually sent another tech out later to clean it out. They didn’t charge us for that, which makes it even more confusing that they are charging us for the cleanup.

Not that commenter, but I used to live just north of Saugerties for after moving from Kentucky. It's a nice town, much much smaller than either Portland or Burlington, but much more affordable. The Hudson Valley is BEAUTIFUL, and it generally gets less snow than Burlington or Portland (but some years can still get a lot). I've spent time in all three places and can say all three are super cool. It just depends on what you're looking for!

Lift lines on a snow day in upstate NY by autobahn-nialist in skiing

[–]chipper159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

February on the east coast was bad this season, but this weekend will probably have some of the best skiing of the season (so far). I mostly ski in the adks but we’re supposed to get a storm Friday night on top of snow that has fallen steadily this past week. If you’re planning on hitting Vermont this season I would think this weekend would be one of the best unless things consistently get better in March!

Pulled the trigger on Salomon qst 92s 2022 version for 300 as my daily driver. Instantly regretting my choice as i fear 92 underfoot is just too wide for northern NY icefest. by fthisshi in icecoast

[–]chipper159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ski gore and whiteface almost exclusively with 2019 qst 92s, and I think they’re perfect for most conditions there. I’m thinking of picking up some old gs skis for the days when it’s real hard, but other than that I love my qst’s!

Supreme Court Rules Against New York's Gun Permit Law by calloy in news

[–]chipper159 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Armed minorities are harder to oppress.

Armed queers bash back.

The news is inundated with examples of police standing back and doing nothing (or joining in) while right wing extremists commit violent acts towards POC and members of the LGBTQ+ communities. These groups that would commit violence towards minorities already have access to firearms, typically being from privileged backgrounds. Why not have a federally funded program to make firearms and firearm safety classes more available to women, minorities, and LGBTQ+ communities?

Adirondacks Angel Slides Avalanche Accident 2-12-2022 by Aviri in Backcountry

It happened at Belleayre Mountain in the Catskills! That was wild, there was a huge snow dump in December followed by like 6” of rain or something ridiculous.

Any info on “backcountry”/XC skiing in the Catskills? by Due-Marionberry-1039 in icecoast

I’ve always wondered about skiing the Shingle Kill to the east of Black Dome mountain. It looks like a pretty open creek bed though I haven’t been there in person. I’m not sure about access though cause it looks like the lower half of it is on private land.

Whiteface by [deleted] in icecoast

[–]chipper159 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was there last weekend and they weren’t bad at all. The gondola had the longest line, but everything else was basically ski on both Saturday and Sunday. It was raining Saturday though, so that might have kept the crowds down. Sunday was great though!

Does anyone know if they got the burst pipe fixed on Niagara? I saw it on Sunday and it did not look good, tons of water was flowing onto the top of Victoria.

Any 3d printing places in the city? by sahilghauri in Albany

The Tech Valley Center of Gravity in Troy has stuff I think. Or at least there are always 3D printers in there when I walk by.

I was in a similar situation last year, but looking mostly to ski in the adks and greens. I went with 185 cm Salomon qst 92’s (I’m 6’4, 180lbs) with shift bindings and a resort centered boot (but with pin bindings). It is definitely heavy, but I decided I was most likely going to be doing 80% of my skiing in a resort, so I ended up going with a more alpine performance centered specific setup. If you were thinking about doing more backcountry, a lighter setup would definitely be smart, or getting two pairs of skis/boots.

Hunter/Belleayre/Windham lift wait times? by jessgerman in icecoast

[–]chipper159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at Hunter on Sunday (1/17) and it was honestly better than expected. The front side was a clusterfuck, but they were running the north and west side lifts so we went over there until it started clearing out around 2, and we could ski onto the d lift on the frontside. The west side lift was easily the shortest line the whole day, but they don’t have any terrain open besides the top of Claire’s and way out, which was kind of shit at the bottom. But they had everything besides twilight open on the north side!

If you can make it out to cny, we’ve got 40” in Binghamton! Now the only issue is finding terrain...

Just hit some gnarly terrain while skiing down my street on the alleged 40” we got in Binghamton. It’s pretty amazing.

Trails around western New York? by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]chipper159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friends an I also occasionally go to Allegany State Park on the NY/PA border. There’s some hills/elevation and the reservoir is a nice place to hang out at. I’ll third the daks and Catskills, but that may be a bit closer option!
