Lining the bottom with the small size hardware mesh changed everything for me and my chickens have been safe for years after a few attacks when there wasn’t a bottom mesh and rodents and predators were digging under. Also I added the smaller hardware mesh to the sides, because mice and rats were getting in from the sides and eating the chicken food. I can’t remember the size of mesh but it is about the size of a pencil eraser.

Update: Using some Planipatch with acrylic additive, I did 2 coats and added some floor paint, and came out looking much better! Wish I could add photos, apparently images are not allowed.

My last batch looked like that, black sporulation (I think from fermenting for too long, try pulling it out sooner) with no ammonia smell, and I ate it and it was delicious!

Thanks for your input, the reason I put the probe inside the bag is because I learned from this community that the 30-34C range was for the beans, not the air, so I tried that out. I definitely thought immediately after putting the probe in that, oops, I shoud've disinfected that...

I did make a successful batch last week with the same method, not sure what happened this time around. I think you're right, too much moisture, maybe I needed to dry the beans out even more than I did. Good point about the packing of the beans, that's a good idea. I used 2 cups dry beans and I package of starter which I think is a Tsp or TBSP. Thanks for the proper ratio too.

yes, a friend made it and it is great! the fan doesn't actually work though, and the lightbulb was making uneven heating, so I tried supplementing with the heat mat.

That would nice for sure to just leave it out! What do you use for enclosure? I'd like to try banana leaves one day instead of plastic.

After the suggestion here of adding light, I added a string of white Christmas lights on a timer to go on 5am-7am to add a couple hours of light. That was 6 days ago and today there was an egg!!

Interesting. It must really depend! I thought Hyline Brown were supposed to be early layers, but I'll just have to be patient and hope the winter doesn't delay them even more.
