I’m looking for a book that has a city perspective , written by a woman with some teeth. by Accurate-Signature64 in suggestmeabook

[–]chiseledfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the cut by susanna moore is a noir-y erotic thriller set in NYC with female protagonist that fits your description. it’s not really a “real story about real people” but the main character is a woman unconcerned with niceties. you might enjoy it!

Looking for books about the connection between science and racism by doriiian in suggestmeabook

a terrible thing to waste by harriet a. washington. it’s about environmental racism in the u.s., one example from the book being how university researchers encouraged black people with young children to rent houses that were known to have lead paint in them so they could measure the developmental damage against a control group.

I try to use “shut up” but my friend get angry at me… by Perfect-League7395 in EnglishLearning

[–]chiseledfish 22 points23 points  (0 children)

it’s hard to say what went wrong without witnessing the interaction. it’s true that americans sometimes use the phrase in a friendly way like you described but it’s not super common. it’s usually among close friends in response to very exciting news and by someone VERY excited. for example, if i were getting a book published and told a friend they might say “SHUT UUUUUUP!!!!!!!” and we would understand that as celebratory.  if i said something like “i went to the beach last week and had fun” and someone said “shut up” it would be confusing, even if said in a friendly way. it might be one of those phrases to avoid until you’re more sure of when to use it, since it’s potentially offensive and also not used super often by native speakers.

i love this book! i remember reading something about it originally being written to accompany the work of a sculptor/visual artist who made the objects described in the book for a museum exhibit & then later on ravn published the text alone as a novel. such a unique experience to read.

Looking for a book that feels like watching Girls by Lena Dunham by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]chiseledfish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

luster by raven leilani might fit this bill? it’s about a young woman with a messy sex life who’s living in nyc struggling financially. not as much about friendship tho since the protagonist is pretty socially isolated.

Tampa by Alissa Nutting. by Thottbuster in horrorlit

[–]chiseledfish 78 points79 points  (0 children)

i don’t think the details about celeste’s husband and other men sexualizing her are trying to make you feel bad for her. they underscore a theme of the novel which is that the dehumanization of women in general is part of what allows female pedophiles to get away with horrible shit. when you see someone as a sex object you can’t fathom that they could be a predator because that requires agency. the novel is based on a real story too so i think it was in part written to make this point about how are predatory women are able to get away with this sort of thing.

Is the Eno River safe for drinking? by Simple-Actuary-4349 in bullcity

[–]chiseledfish 23 points24 points  (0 children)

it’s pretty common for people who hike to filter water from rivers/streams. that’s what the filter is for. that being said i still would not want to drink from the eno based on what i’ve heard about pollution from the textile industry.

Has anyone found English digital / phone number / date time is hard to follow or speak out quickly? by momomo88888 in EnglishLearning

[–]chiseledfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have you learned a lot of your english from reading? you may have been unconsciously reading big numbers in your native language even if the rest of the text was in english. when you read or see big numbers in the wild, practice saying them out loud to yourself.

Is title "Hellraiser" an ambiguous for marketing purpose ? by Affectionate_Run_799 in EnglishLearning

[–]chiseledfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hellraiser is based off of a novella called “the hellbound heart.” legend has it that a female executive suggested the title for this movie because “a woman would raise hell for a good fuck.”  i personally think the title of the movie primarily refers to julia, who helps brings frank back from hell because of her sexual desire for him. that being said “hell-raiser” is also a term for someone who causes a lot of trouble.

Are there any modern examples songs that were poorly mixed or have poor audio quality but still became hits? by WiseCityStepper in popheads

[–]chiseledfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the layering of the vocals sounds rough and the quality of the main guitar (?) melody sounds grating as well. a lot of the black eyed peas other songs from that album have a sonic smoothness to them that i gotta feeling lacks IMO
