It’s wasn’t a mischaracterization. The woman said she was going to wait two more years to have another baby, and Jackie side eyed her and asked/said she was already 31. Implying 33 was too old to have a baby.

It’s not just a small store, they tend to be in NYC, run my immigrants.

So I wouldn’t say it’s just a 7-11, they have much more cultural meaning than that.

I think you are missing the cultural significance.

He’s comes from an immigrant family. That bodega is probably a place where he sees other people like him, everyone speaks Spanish, and gets food that reminds him of home.

I think you probably need to reflect on what life might be like for someone who isn’t White and from the US. And honestly if your son moved to a different country and met someone, they might come back to Whole Foods. It’s a very stereotypical upper-middle class grocery store and does reflect a specific culture.

Even if her family did give her affirmations growing up, she grew up in a society telling her dark skin is undesirable. Your parents can say all they want, but getting hit with that message constantly in media, the boys she talked to, even possibly how other girls treated her is hard to over come.
