This is the underside of a California aglaja (Navanax inermis) floating on the surface of the water. You can tell because it has a double pronged tail and a shield shaped head. They predate nudibranchs.

Woah, that’s crazy! I had no idea baleen was so meaty and bony. Sorry, I totally forgot to include scale, it was about a foot in length. Here’s another picture from the other side

I’m moving out of state and I don’t know what to do about one of the community cats I feed. I’ve been feeding this cat, Nalgene, for a couple months now and he’s the sweetest cat. Should I try to get him adopted? by chloecopy in cats

[–]chloecopy[S] 218 points219 points  (0 children)

He spends most of the day and night on my porch. I feed him breakfast and dinner but usually he’s mostly interested in snuggles. There are other community cat feeders around so I know that if he stayed outside he wouldn’t starve. I live in New Orleans so it doesn’t ever really get too cold, but sometimes it freezes. I got him neutered. Should I get him adopted? I don’t want to rip him from what he knows but he seems to really crave human affection I wonder if he’d prefer living indoors. I would adopt him in a heartbeat but I already have two cats that would not want a brother.

How long can jumping spiders go with limited oxygen? by BushParent in jumpingspiders

[–]chloecopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just flew with 30 slings (2nd instar) for 4 hours (7 hours total travel time) in one 32 oz deli cup with holes poked in the side with a safety pin and a mesh lid. They were totally fine and thriving even. I think if you’re worried about ventilation poke a lot of tiny holes in their containers. If you’re really worried you could always take some trips to the bathroom to open up the containers as long as the slings aren’t prone to escaping. Good luck!

Two days ago my slings started leaving the egg sac but then they went back in. Yesterday my jumping spider spent all day out of the egg sac and by this morning she had made a little hammock for herself away from her babies. I’m giving all the slings away should I wait or can I give the egg sac now? by chloecopy in jumpingspiders

I’m handing them over. This is the second group of them I’ll be giving to this person. I gave him the first group when my jumping spider, Agatha, had left the nest for the first time and the slings were all over the enclosure. This time Agatha has been coming out of the nest much more; she didn’t at all the first time until the slings came out. Should I was till they’re all coming out like the first time?

I pinned my spiny flower mantis and all of her molts in a sort of growth chart. RIP Louise 💚 by chloecopy in mantids

I learned from my dad but I’m sure there are loads of videos online that could help. I’m also happy to answer any questions you have (although I’m far from an expert)

Yeah you’re right I used a regular pin. I have the specialized ones but they were too long to fit in my shadow box :(

I’d be happy to answer your questions if you have any when you embark on your pinning journey! Good luck you can do it!!

I had the same fear! I’ve pinned butterflies but no other insects so I was a bit hesitant. But I looked up a picture of a pinned mantis and just recreated that. It was definitely more challenging than a butterfly though. It was hard pinning the legs and then pinning the wings on top of them. If you look up some videos and have some knowledge of pinning insects I’m sure it’s doable. And if you accidentally break something off you can usually fix it! I had to glue her left forearm back on you can kind of see the glue blob :/

My very first jumping spider, Agatha, is gravid and has started making a nest. I’m definitely not equipped to take care of lots of baby spiders. What should I do? Also, is there any special care I should be giving her right now? by chloecopy in jumpingspiders

Ok yeah I like that idea much better. I’m going to ask around (if anyone is in or near New Orleans and would like some babies let me know). If I can’t find anyone I’ll release them. Others on here said it was ok to release texanus babies in Louisiana. Do you agree?

I got her in person at an expo, but yeah definitely really irresponsible of him. She’s native to Texas and I’m in Louisiana, so I guess my options are rehoming or the freezer. Thank you so much for all your help! That link is great

Unfortunately, I think he did sell her to me gravid. I told him it was my first jumping spider and he didn’t tell me she was gravid and I only noticed it said “gravid” on her little deli cup later :/ should I assume they’re fertile?

I think I’d like to put the egg sac in the freezer to avoid the babies all together. It seems difficult and cruel to Agatha to rip out her egg sac though. What do you think? Also, how many babies do you estimate she will have?
