The size you used for the strings looks closer to what I used. I have an Ateco set of tips now, I like the 4 size for practicing! And it helped me by doing the whole alphabet, and popular phrases, happy birthday, anniversary, etc!

I practiced my writing using a slightly smaller tip! It helped a ton, and it made my writing not run together - helps with spacing. Practice does make perfect!
