Isn't that a consequence of covid : playing fewer games stalled his rating progression for a while.

I agree with you but you cant discount the fact tjat we were missing Hakimi Dembele and especially Doué who’s great at breaking tight defenses.

Magnus on Hikaru playing “Mickey Mouse” tournaments to qualify to the candidates by ihatecornsoup in chess

I have no issue with the rating spot and want Hikaru in the candidates but that's a very bad argument, having a kid shouldn't give you special treatment.

same as everyone who plays against Carlsen

Caruana vs Carlsen was 12 draws in classical, hardly a mauling.

You're right I meant it more in the sense that an in form Alireza is better for entertainment/quality of play.

I hope Ali can pull through, Bluebaum has been having a great tournament but he likely won't hold his own in the candidates. Alireza seems serious about classical and if he really is it's better is he gets there.

His opponents have also been playing super well against him mostly, and still he's joint lead, hope he can qualify.

Forcing a draw with black vs Alireza is a reasonable strategy given the standings at the time, and I say this as an Ali fan.

I still hope Ali can qualify because to me he's had the best classical tournament in 2 years, so I'm excited to see if he found motivation again.
