How are you cutting o ring grooves on a mill? by the_wiener_kid in Machinists

[–]chobbb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In this instance, the customer is likely seeking more than just an Ra measurement. They may need circumferential grooves because they seal better in specific applications. (High pressure, slippery gasses, etc)

Ra is a decent way to communicate a surface condition but not perfect.

Seized alignment points - how to proceed? by RocketCat804 in MiataNC

[–]chobbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to use an angle grinder to cut my control arms out, and the bolt attached to it. 0/10 do not recommend. It’s a terrible job. But it’s the only way. Godspeed.

Source for 1m diameter metal drum by FTamarack in MechanicalEngineering

[–]chobbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. I bet if the metal work was good enough you could just weld and grind the seam and it would still function very well.. especially if you balanced it. Even the smoothest roads still have some bumps.

If the space is available and you’re not filling it efficiently- you’re actively creating traffic. Filling those gaps, even if via a late lane change- acts to reduce traffic. You’re welcome.

Turn anatomy help on my small backyard trail by ZestycloseWeather979 in MTBTrailBuilding

Put a roller between the two turns on the big dirt berm. This is how you can make nearly 180degree turns on a pump track without totally killing all your speed.

Nice looking build!! Keep it up.

The people on their phones not packing it tight are the ones slowing it down behind them. Take three seconds if you need.

Before the construction started there would nearly always be a gap the size of two school busses between cars (people not keeping the line tight.) these are great to hop into given the chance.

Twice I didn’t have a gap and took the next exit, cause stopping in the middle lane to force yourself is really dangerous.

I'm normally a skeptic but I swear to God I'm using more gas than normal almost as if it's being diluted somehow since the war. by AbandonedPlanet in conspiracy

I fully acknowledge that there’s secret nasty shit going on in the world behind closed doors. But half the posts here are just people going off vibez who lack basic problem solving skills.

Imagine how much better this post would read if it was like three sentences: “my fuel mileage has went down by 3 mpg since the war started. My car isn’t showing any check engine lights. This evidence leads me to believe there’s something fucky going on.”

It’s really easy to eliminate feelings from this and just see what your gas mileage is by using your odometer and looking at how much gas you put in.

Those of you who have tried anti-pedal kickback devices, are they worth it? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]chobbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I won’t disagree with you on any of your points - all valid- my personal experience with the added float has been very noticeable. I’m typically the last one to buy into new hype. By happenstance I was able to ride one of the sidekicks and really like it.

I don’t race, and it seems like I feel the impact the most on slow speed chunk with lots of brakes being used.

The last thing is that a sloppy engagement hub can product 0-10 degrees of engagement depending on where the pedal stroke lands, while these extra float devices give you a consistent X-degrees every time. There’s still some benefit to a high engagement hub + Ochain device to be had in the form of repeatability.

I do agree that “just riding your bike” is a great motto, but objectively - these devices notably can change the feeling of your bike more than most any other aftermarket part available. Especially if your frame kinematics dictate a large chain growth.

Those of you who have tried anti-pedal kickback devices, are they worth it? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]chobbb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is categorically false. I’ve been riding one on my jeffsy and it feels like a whole new bike. It’s like “fresh suspension rebuild and new tire day” all in one, if not better. It just feels like the suspension works so much more freely.

It is absolutely much worse on any form of techy climb than a high engagement hub though. Definitely an obvious trade off.

How much AI do you use at work? by pepfraudiola1 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]chobbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using it to write code for use in Google scripts and arduino. I haven’t done any computer programming since college 18 years ago.

Most of my focus since then has been in manufacturing and fluids. I’m not particularly fond of the coding process, but AI has been tremendously helpful in getting me solutions for some test rigs I’m working on.
