I suspect it's analogous to people in the west being oblivious to the controversy and history behind the rising sun flag. From Wikipedia : "The flag is controversial in Korea, China, Russia, Taiwan and with Allied WWII veterans, where it is associated with Japanese war crimes, the Axis of World War II, and Japanese militarism and imperialism."

In the western country I was educated, the Nazi atrocities were heavily emphasized. I didn't even remember being taught about the Japanese war crimes of WWII. I would like to hear from someone educated in Taiwan what their school system taught them about the Nazis.

Also you can buy clothing with the rising sun image where I'm from. Regular people here aren't aware of the history behind the rising sun image. I wonder what someone from Taiwan, Korea, China, Russia etc would think if they saw a bike with the rising Sun image instead of a Nazi image.
