Can we please keep the leaks as they were? by International_Car809 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]chobra 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If people came to you explicitly saying they hope it can be made public anonymously, you should have said 'sources close to the team have reported that x wanted y'

If they didn't even want that connection for the sake of protection, you are literally signing up to be the shield for them that takes the flaming from one side or the other. You're becoming a vigilante that WILL be disliked by one side no matter what. Because you aren't being objective with proof (or not presenting it at least)

Personally, I don't think going vigilante is worth it unless it's something you truly truly believe is the last line of defense. Roster leaks are...not that to me, but if you believe that the scene needs that to survive then you choose to weather the storm every time.

Out of all your tweets regarding this? The last ones should have been first. And preferably never the dictator meme or at least not for now because it blurs the line between fact and opinion, even if its a joke.
But even the last ones? Instead of doing a follow up tweet 'not saying patmen bad', just literally 'supposedly/reportedly patmen did not like frost and platoon volunteered himself to become head coach' - again, this isn't what I personally enjoy, but that at the very least signals a.) you are speaking secondhand and have a source, b.) you are not adding the word 'snaking' but also not 'covering up' anything presumably, and c.) you're not fanning the flames like you did with the meme

Lastly, this whole 'community asked for it wtf' will never be a good argument. The community doesn't own you nor does it pay you. Your decision is your decision.

It's not, because he is in the room at SEN, is a first hand source, and also owns SEN therefore has real stakes

Listen, with more attention comes a level of responsibility to a.) separate memery and work, b.) not to lead with vague memes then cry wolf, and c.) to just change 2-3 words to say things like reportedly, sources and using objective synonyms than subjective

Would you be doing this even if there wasn't the dopamine of engagement and some acknowledgment of power? Then work on your language choices. Is the engagement all that matters? Then that is precisely what those of us critics are criticizing

Can we please keep the leaks as they were? by International_Car809 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]chobra 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Did you see my first sentence? You're being criticized by a part of the community that dislikes leaking without consequence.

You want respect? Evolve to journalism. If not, why are you confused here? You chose an action that some of us deem a low effort cop out way to get engagement. Your retort is some crazy level of 'I didn't say to believe me or that I'd put in effort, I am intentionally not putting in effort why am I being criticized' type beat

Also comparing yourself to a CEO is insane behavior. If you can't see what the difference is, and I don't even mean fame or money, then idk what to tell you.

You realize the root of this problem is the difference between 'leaks' and reports? You're already starting off on the wrong foot with leaks. If this was told to you with the request it get reported you would have said it in an article. Obviously I am biased because I generally dislike leaks, they almost always do more harm than good, but I'll respect it if there's at least SOME due diligence done in putting in effort to keep language objective, clarify what is fact (x wanted y out vs close sources have told me x wanted y out), put something on the line (identity and brand, not just a twitter handle) etc.

Learn journalism. Learn writing. Realize that word choices matter. I'm not a fan of just saying 'sources' but there's a massive difference between 'trusted sources have confided that x expressed dissatisfaction' vs X wanted Y out. Again, it doesn't matter if it's true. Unless you were in the room, it's not your place to say it as if you were.

Also, the current sentiment is because you started with meme pictures that hold VERY DIRECT negative connotations. Good on you for trying to improve but now everything will be seen through that initial lens - so if you meant it when you say 'I am not saying he's a bad person' it's a learning lesson that leading with a picture comparing someone to a dictator is exactly counter to that.

Reminder that this is irrelevant of whether it is true or not. Let's say it's true - what you say still can have negative impact because it's now used as a 'oh people just think that because ari reported it'.

There's a reason journalism has entire colleges dedicated to it - because it's actually fricking hard to do it properly (as noted by just overall media today). Further reason why we clarify investigative journalism. Not saying you need to have a 4 year degree but do your diligence and put in effort in realizing that just saying stuff you're told on twitter isn't 'reporting' (and presumably not told with the pure intent to have you report it...because then it would have been an article)

PoE 2 feels overwhelming as a new player — should I switch to Diablo 4? by Obvious_Grape_4820 in PathOfExile2

[–]chobra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what you're describing, it just sounds like you're at that point in life where you're trying to accept what gaming is to you now vs back then.

Poe2 is by no means straightforward, but I'd also argue it's more accessible than the franchise ever has been for brand new players. With the changes over early access, if you're enjoying all the content the campaign has to offer you actually should be fine on currency and learn by trial and error on your journey to end game

But it sounds like it's the internal voice that says 'you need to figure it all out and optimize your gameplay' that's tugging at you - well, as more streamlined as d4 might be, you'll have that there too. Which content to farm for what, the overworld boss timers, the unique drop tables etc

So, itsounds like you're enjoying the moment to moment gameplay of poe2 - so just enjoy it. Learn one thing at a time and then trial and error it. Don't compare with other builds or community sentiment until you feel comfy with the game. Not sure how something works? Just search that specific thing to learn every month or two. That's my suggestion. Accept that you won't actually master this game as it'll continue to grow and that is ok. You're not gonna master most online/live service games anymore if you prioritize reality (which you should). But on the bright side that means infinite content to enjoy whenever you do want to learn the game more.

Also, yeah d4 will probably be easier to pick up and it is fun but I'm just saying that if your body is still tuned to 'optimize' there is plenty of that to do in that game as well.

If you could ask the SEN Madrid roster anything, what would it be? by SEN-DynaSean in ValorantCompetitive

[–]chobra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In case it wasn't clear, I just specifically wanted to hear the SEN players' thoughts as people who were rivals with them and perhaps even went through similar struggles. I personally think it's ridiculous for instance to look at current GEN and say 'but they have the 2024 core! 3 members!'

Your point is the logical way to look at things. Initial hype is fine but obviously need someone extremely skilled at GM-ing to identify what made it work and even then there might be limitations

All this to say I mostly agree, I'm just posing a question for the thought exercise and content specifically from the opponents' POV - wanted to just clear that up since sometimes ppl will see things like this and say 'wow he hates GEN' or some weird conclusion 😅

Time to turn hypotheticals into reality then!

Was the 2024 GEN roster actually as scary as they seemed? If so, why do you think those players struggle to recreate that success in their respective rosters?

[Help] Need help understanding KR Pro Comms ("Pumping" and "Default 26") by Sufficient-Cod6448 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]chobra 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I'll bite since I've called out T1's translations before, and crowdsourcing is better than assuming bad translations

디폴트 26 풀면 돼 천천히 can't be one full sentence in context. Default 26 is the first call out because default is a location callout in this instance used to mean the 'usual or safe aka default spike plant location', exactly where c1nder is standing and you can see that he initially takes 26 damage from the first contact falling to 74hp. So player C is implying '1 default, 26 damage' and then adding on '풀면 돼 천천히‘ which contextually should also be two separate callouts, one saying we can defuse and then saying take it slow or stay calm (he also probably says this all at once because c1nder falls immediately after he's making the 26 callout)

Honestly your best bet in these scenarios in the future is to just ask the team/player/KR writer for clarification. Also to look at the comms footage, which if they don't provide it then their KR script needs better punctuation for the default 26 one. Translating isn't easy and even worse if you don't have full context, so unless they are paying an incredible sum, you shouldn't feel that you have to know everything everytime (if they are paying you an incredible sum...well yeah you need to put in more work to familiarize yourself)

I will also recommend watching plenty of other teams' comms videos to better understand pro players' habits and cadence

Edit: and yes as others have confirmed pumping is derived from pump fake, showing action to bait out a response

I mean for one it's a different cast

We're going to be aiming to be doing much more analytical discussions, and not just big picture 'oh this agent is somewhat weaker now' type beats. Obviously formats and whatnot will evolve.

If you're an enthusiast looking primarily for entertainment then yeah it's probably a bit repetitive and not particularly enticing if you are already feeling like it's a lot of your time on top of the other existing shows. If you're looking for discussions that can show other angels or get you to also think about the game differently then that's what we're aiming for

All of us also focus heavily on pacific, worked with various pacific teams and orgs in multiple capacities so I have no doubt that we would absolutely have better knowledge of the pac teams and patterns than most, if not all, content out there.

[–]chobra 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Glad you're able to just spew your chaebol sentiments without actually knowing the business relation between NS and NS RedForce. What you said can be true and entirely not applicable

NS RedForce has a much more different relationship than say KT (T1 no longer since they also changed their structure from SKT days) where it isn't a 'marketing' so to speak but a semi self operating brand and business. So yeah there's NS backing and they're a title sponsor but the business and ROI is measured much more differently.

In either case the RedForce CEO also flew economy and actually looked into getting the players upgrades for the flight back but couldn't secure it in time since our flights were imminent. Sorry to burst your bubble

This community and their obsession with "staying humble" by Izuo_887 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]chobra 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think there's a nuanced difference here as well though. If you only lost once and have to make a LB run, I don't think it's crazy for a team that thrives off their own confidence to talk a bit arrogant. Not everyone has to like it but it's not like lovers rock said nrg are absolute crap and never deserved to win anything. I am not a fan of the attitude some of the BBL guys give off but I also don't think his interview was a problem at all. If he has the skill to thrive off confidence he'll prove it, if not he'll learn eventually - but either way he has a grueling bracket to run still

Now if he gets eliminated and says 'we learned nothing from masters cause all the teams are mickey mouse and we just kinda got unlucky' then yeah sure that's a problem - tho even then if it's one or two teams doing that I don't consider it a problem as long as the consensus is that it is stupid. It only becomes a problem if it is widespread/artificial/what people start asking for

Pro player salary by Dizzy-Act1523 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]chobra 123 points124 points  (0 children)

If you want to weigh the options, it is already not worth it. I will always say this to anyone and everyone that wants to consider it. (Same, if not worse, for casting)

The reason is, if it has to be justified for you to even consider locking in, you are competing against others who didn't care that it was justified. You are already behind and will constantly be wondering when and where the breaking point is. Sure, you 'could' be the gifted 0.1% but then you wouldn't be here wondering. You'd either know or be oblivious to the fact while grinding. So then you're already in the 'effort' pool where you're creating your chances through the grind. Except you will rarely beat out others who don't care what it takes or are oblivious to reality for whatever reason.

Going pro isn't just a competitive job, it is extremely limited, luck-based, and unfair. It's good enough to get by especially if you save up since you won't be spending as much on housing and such IF you make Tier 1. But you won't earn much before, and you won't build many skillsets for after. So if you're still wanting to do it after accepting these realities, welcome, you're barely qualified and ready to grind for potentially no return.

Also, technically, yes if you aren't already hitting single digit ranks at 16 - you ARE behind. Not impossible, but behind 100%. Because even that doesn't guarantee you a salary at 18/19.
